  1. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 6, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) Your point is well taken, but Silverio could just as well be moved up to AA. True, he is only 21, but he has a pretty extensive pro history for a 21 year old. He finished last year at W-S as a 20 year old; why can't Ravelo? Silverio has a total of 67 games for 2011-2012 at High A, with 245 at bats. Our two Third Basemen at AA are 30 year old Corey Smith and Jon Gilmore, neither of whom are prospects. I think it makes sense to move them both up late June. Regardless of blocking... Ravelo has done well, but rushing him can stunt his development. Now that he is hitting consistently for average, the next challenge should be for him to start adding some power - not rushing him to the next level when he is already young where he is. As a 3B who, according to some, may end up at 1B, he needs to hit for power and draw some walks, ideally.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2012 -> 01:09 PM) They pay the piper at the major league level. You always ignore that, and the fact that the Sox minor league system is, and has been, producing major league players. Someone posted recently, looking since about 2008, the Sox system has produced more major leaguers than most or all the other teams. The system absolutely lacks depth, and needs better investment... but if the system is churning out talent better than most, then they aren't the worst system around. They MAY have the worst CURRENT DEPTH OF TALENT, or somewhere close to it. There is a difference.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 6, 2012 -> 12:59 PM) For anyone looking for the best name in the Sox draft... they just selected, in the 24th round, a guy named Storm Throne. Not kidding. He's a RHP, from Morningside College, Iowa. 6'7", 215 pounds, 21 years old. I just had to do a little looking around on this guy. From perfectgame.org in their Iowa overview for the draft:

  5. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 6, 2012 -> 12:40 PM) Sox on the cheap so far today, acquiring mostly organizational filler players. Of the 8 picks so far, 7 have been college seniors, the other another high school catcher. Hopefully in a few rounds they start taking some more risks on kids with higher ceilings. They did that up top, during the first couple days of the draft. Now just filling in some gaps. That's what happens with every team, at this round it has zero to do with "cheap". Once you get past round 15, the bonus money is like $1000 or less per player. Some of you guys are awfully paranoid.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:01 PM) I wouldn't go that far. Avengers was incredible. Pretty sure Steve was giving me crap because I had earlier stated I thought Avengers was just OK. Still think that.
  7. He needs to play, at a Paulie-like level, for another 3 years or so after this one, to have a good shot. That would put him over 500 HR's, and some other thresholds. Some post-seasons would help too, as would an MVP or at least a close vote for it. He might make it. But he sure isn't there right now.
  8. May Q be with us. Let's get even in the series... GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
  9. Have to agree that Ravelo doesn't need to move up just now, he's still just 20. Needs to develop some power. No rush. Kevan Smith was pulled for a pinch hitter after 1 AB, a double. Hopefully no injury there, or at least nothing serious.
  10. Round 9 (291) Sox pick: Micah Johnson, 2B (IU Junior)...
  11. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) We can win, we can win, we can win said the little team that could. Now that's funny right there. But, we can do it lol wut?
  12. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) At this point in the draft, you're not going to find a guy with clean mechanics that throws 95+, so if you want somebody with that much arm power you're going to have the mechanical risk. Sure, that's why I said from the beginning, at this round I'll take it. The alternative is less power arm, and therefore lower ceiling.
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:59 PM) This pick is the perfect example of the draft philosophy under the newer staff. Tall kid with a big fastball that has some upside. It's the 6th round, find a guy with a tool and some upside. And I'm the first to say, since about 2008 or so, the Sox draft philosophy away from "safe" guys and towards higher risk - higher ceiling guys, is a good thing. Again, not saying I dislike the pick, just saying that whippy arm motion is I think the risky side of the equation.
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:55 PM) I like all of these players more than Lance Broadway/Keenyn Walker I wouldn't give up on Walker just yet. Like Thompson in some ways, he was very raw coming in, and needs more time to develop.
  15. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:54 PM) You laugh, but he's legitimately hot right now. He's gotten his average up to the .220's. Yes, he's been hot lately. No, he doesn't belong where he is, starting and leading off. That's why I laughed.
  16. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:49 PM) I really like that pick. Big kid, plus fastball. Maybe they can improve his secondary pitches to keep him as a starter. Otherwise he has a good shot to be a reliever with a mid 90s fastball. To be honest, any time I hear the Sox took a kid with good stuff despite bad mechanics I get excited. They've been pretty damn good with that. I don't mind the pick, he's worth a shot. And you are right that they are good with helping the mechanics. You just never know whether a pitcher can make those changes, or if he can, what he'll be like on the other side. At this round though, never a problem for me taking someone like this.
  17. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) Wilkins is 8 for his last 17 with 3 HR, with 9 RBI in his last 3 1/2 games. Came back from DL on 5/30. After two weak games, so far in June (5 games): .429/.478/.952/1.430, including 3 home runs. 3 K vs 2 BB. Pedro Hernandez with a short and less than stellar outing. KW Jr hitting leadoff, LOL
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 02:30 PM) http://vimeo.com/37206121 Big kid... mechanics look really whippy though, on those long arms, that's a little worrisome.
  19. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) I know 8 year olds that understand the concept very well and some that have no grasp of it what so ever. There is something more than education going on there. Yeah, and Ozzie didn't have these problems, at least not that I recall. Ozzie is uneducated and sometimes ignorant, but he's stupid, and no one questioned his work ethic as a player.
  20. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 01:08 PM) That's an odd name... His last name is a family name for me (though not my last name). But yeah, odd choice to go Br Br.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 08:19 PM) MIBIII exceeded my expectations but quite a bit. Josh Brolin is awesome. And it had just enough funny in it to break up the action. The ending was spectacular in my opinion. Agree with all of this post. In fact, I think I liked it better than Avengers, in terms of overall experience.
  22. Ravelo headed to the SAL all-star game...
  23. Mark is headed to the SAL all-start game...
  24. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 10:02 AM) Two more nice hitting games by outfielders Haddow (Kanny) and Earley (W-S). Both hitting close to .340. Wish they would get promoted. Since KW Jr isn't getting out of the way (even if he should), there has to be a chain reaction starting from the top. Like... Danks2 gets promoted with Fukudome released/DL'd... Mitchell goes to AAA to take D2's spot... Early or Shoemaker moves up to AA to take Mitchell's spot... Haddow moves up to take Early/Shoemaker's spot. That sort of thing. This has actually been a pretty good year for some outfielders in the Sox system. Danks2 still K's a lot but is improving... Mitchell looking good... a bunch of marginal guys pounding the ball (Early, Haddow, Shoemaker)... just need Thompson and Walker to come around.
