  1. Leyson Septimo is very interesting to me. Always put up big K numbers, but had huge control issues. Joined Sox system at B-Ham last year, and but his walk rate by about 30% in the same league... now this year even lower, and lower still in his last 10 games but still striking out a fair amount. Plus hitters are showing only .135 BAA. Versus lefties its .095, a ridiculous 6.3 GO/AO, and he's only walked 2 vs striking out 16 against 42 batters. Me thinks he could be the next LOOGY experiment in Chicago.
  2. Youk + $5.6M for Stewart and Bridge? Sold! Approved! From the beginning I've not seen the big appeal with Stewart. He can't start, he's maybe able to eventually be a reliever, and there are a dozen in our system I'd rather have. He's kind of a Mike MacDougal type to me. No loss there. Lillibridge is a handy guy to have around... except that the Sox really don't need him right now. Youkilis may only be the .230 hitter, .700 OPS guy we've seen so far, with mediocre defense at 3B... but if that's the disappointing case, that's still a lot better than .176 hitter with a .550-ish OPS we have now who is also a mediocre defender at 3B. Plus there is the potential for Youk to get back closer to form. Basically, the Sox gave up nothing they needed in terms of players, and only owe, what, like $1M for the rest of the year for Youk? Can't help but love this deal.
  3. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 24, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) Erp, I'm slow this morning. The max they can spend is the $548k. OK, just wasn't sure. Given how many picks this team has already signed, I'd love to see the Sox just throw $550k at Ayala and say "this is everything we have", and see if he bites.
  4. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 23, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) It would be factored into the top 10 pool, yes. Any player signed over $100k in round 11-40 counts against your pool. Since Stoner signed for $120k, $20k would be counted towards the original pool. Or $180k for Stoner. Whatever the number is. Another edit: Baseball America has Stoner's signing over $100k counting towards the pool. With remaining money in the pool plus the 5% overage, Sox have $548,640 left to spend. So they could offer Ayala $648k then, yes? All the overage plus the limit?
  5. The two 2B's on the rookies squads both starting very nicely. Mark Haddow not in Kanny's lineup... day off, or on his way up? W-S wow, 15 runs on 19 hits so far in the 7th. 4 HR's. Looks like Castro was doing OK through 5, then the wheels fell off.
  6. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jun 23, 2012 -> 07:42 PM) I would see how Castro performs in Triple A before I call him a top pitching prospect. The guy has been in Double A for three straight years, so it's not surprising that he's doing well. He was straight up atrocious in Triple A the past two years. The question is more about... who would you rank higher in the Sox system?
  7. I've been hoping for Axelrod to get another shot. To me, he's clearly the better SP prospect over Stewart and has been all along. Drives me nuts they kept giving Stewart more chances. Show me I'm right, Dylan. Just give us a decent 6 or 7 inning effort out there, a quality start would be great.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 23, 2012 -> 08:51 AM) Sanchez moved to SS for W-S. Ravelo moved to 1B for Kanny a few days ago. Wilkins at 3B for B'ham. Sanchez has done that plenty already. And are Ravelo or Wilkins at either placer permanently? I doubt it. Gilmore is on the DL, that may have prompted the need for an occasional fill-in there by Wilkins. Not sure about Ravelo. I wouldn't call any of the moves permanent at this point because its obvious they are moving a lot of players around on a daily basis. Give it a few weeks. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 23, 2012 -> 12:34 PM) I imagine Rienzo's PED bust makes him way lower on the depth chart for a possible call up. By the way Castro's picture on milb.com is scary. Rienzo is up the list, but the PED thing does add some question about his true abilities. Also, he's shown flashes, but hasn't been terribly consistent yet. Above him on my list among pitchers would be Castro, Quintana (if he's still eligible), Beck, Leesman, maybe Hernandez, maybe Axelrod and maybe Molina. Petricka is in the territory as well.
  9. I really don't get why DeMichele started at Bristol. Rienzo and Leesman both had nice starts.
  10. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 22, 2012 -> 04:00 PM) Jon Gaston got released so Oester took his spot. A lot of odd shuffling going on in the minors. Walters to Winston-Salem and Rienzo to AA were notable promotions, but I think there are a few more in the works soon. The rosters don't look all that settled to me. I'd imagine we'll see an outfield parade soon, with JorDanks looking permanent in Chicago and Fuku gone. Mitchell might move up, but we'll see. Earley or Shoemaker then goes up to B-Ham, Haddow to W-S, and that opens up a spot in Kanny for someone.
  11. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 22, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) Wow. Looking at the results, the people who are voting don't seem to have a clue. Frank #6? Ed Walsh #48? I mean the man only has the lowest career E.R.A. in baseball history. Eddie Collins #25? I put my top 5 as Thomas, Jackson, Collins, Walsh, Appling. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Jun 22, 2012 -> 02:58 PM) So far konerko is Number 1. Are the voters all under 20 years old or something?
  12. Olacio finished nicely, albeit with a couple extra walks. Cory McGinnis with a nice debut for GF. Salvador Sanchez, former Sox system OF, pitched for Bristol: struck out the side in one inning of work. Interesting.
  13. Per the Trib, Castro has been promoted to AAA, and Santos Rodriguez got sent back to B-Ham after just a couple days. Apparently it was just a fill-in thing for him.
  14. Wow - a little over two weeks after the draft, and the Sox have signed 28 of their first 32 picks. The only remaining ones are Eric Jaffe (11th, and his post-season just ended recently), Derek Thompson (13th), Jordan Guerrero (15th) and Sammy Ayala (17th, would need serious overslot money). Not bad.
  15. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 01:15 PM) I was going through the names and there aren't many in Arizona at this point. Almost all of the unaccounted for guys have been released. I could see DeMichele getting moved up, though they might just send him to Kanny if he gets off to a hot start in Bristol. Johnson 9th, Ruiz is a 16th round pick, McCarthy 18th, and Voight 20th - that's it for top 20 round picks as position players at GF. That's going to be a mostly filler lineup. Kind of surprised DeMichele is at Bristol. Some pitchers worth watching will be there, though: Beck (2nd round pick), Brennan (4th), Isler (8th), Hardin (10th)... plus some guys from 2011 worth watching: Linza (now a starter), Parrent, Royse, Dvorsky.
  16. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 12:35 PM) Great Falls doesn't really have any top end position player picks on the roster, but especially when you're looking at the wrong lineup. D'oh D'OH!!! I looked at the lineup, only recognized a couple names, did the pitchers, then went back for the hitters and picked the wrong team. Micah Johnson: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB K Abe Ruiz and Steve Nikorak with 3- hit nights, Nikorak had a HR DJ Jarrad 4-5, 3B, RBI that's more like it. Micah Johnson is a 9th round pick this year, so he's worth keeping an eye on. The rest of their lineup are just place-holders, until the new draft picks and others in AZ can get there to start playing.
  17. What, no thread? Two games yesterday, plus one PPD... Columbus beat Charlotte in 10 innings, 5-3 Fuku 1-5, 3B, K (rehab so far: 2-for-10, 1 BB, 3 K) Dan Johnson 2-4, 2B, BB Conor Jackson 4-5, 2B, RBI (since returning from DL: 5-for-14, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 K) Shirek 5 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K Remenowsky 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (2012 AAA debut) Omogrosso took the loss Great Falls beat Helena, 11-7 Chris McFarland (SS), Larry Roenicke (LF) and Michael Nemeth (DH) all with 3 hits No top end picks playing on offense yet Casey 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (W) Bowling and Dvorsky both hit around a bit Bristol PPD
  18. I'll be there to see the Sox salvage a game in the series, take the season series 4-2, and get back on track again. Sec 536, Row 1. Come say hey.
  19. Dan Remenowsky has been promoted back to Charlotte. He didn't have much left to prove in AA. Final (hopefully) numbers in B-Ham this season in 17 games: 33.2 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 36 K 1.60 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, .117 AvgA, 9.7 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 Strikeout rate a little lower than 2011, walk rate a little higher, though both still quite good... but the AvgA dropped from .182 to a pretty amazing .117, and his 0.74 WHIP is fantastic. What chances Rem has of being a major leaguer, rest on his performance in AAA, the only level he's yet to kick ass at thus far. If his numbers in Charlotte are similar to what he's done in AA this season and last, he may be in the discussion in 2013 for this team, or someone else.
  20. Direct from him, Dan Remenowsky is headed for Charlotte.
  21. QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 12:26 PM) Read in the Great Falls paper that Brian Drahman (the pitching coach there) said Linza earned it with his pitching. Said his control has been outstanding. So he is a starter now? Very interesting, thanks for the info.
  22. Linza is in Great Falls, which isn't a big surprise. What is a surprise, though, is that he started, instead of relieving. And it looks like he did reasonably well: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. 7 groundouts against 2 flyouts. That'll work for a first start. Hard to say if this is a permanent move, or if he's just holding a spot for some of the 2012 draft picks to show up. If he is indeed becoming a starter - which he was for both years at Liberty - and can be successful at it, that will significantly raise his stock, especially for a 38th round pick.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) Circa 90 mph fastball and ~80 mph breaking pitch did a fine job in AA, hard to know whether his stuff will translate to higher levels. Thanks for that stuff. Interesting - it appears he has abandoned the high leg kick.
