  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 10:43 AM) That too. We need to reconcile the modern financial age with a system that was set up exclusively for stock trading nearly 100 years ago. The way we monitor the financial system needs to change with the times. The arguments about this somehow loosening requirements are just silly, and ignore the fact that even with all of the bodies and regulations, people who want to commit fraud are still doing it pretty easily. No amount of regulations is going to fix that. I have 100% confidence in two things: 1. Combining the fin reg agencies, at least the ones that deal with the markets (SEC, CFTC, FINRA, Exchange/Clearing House ones), woud speed the ability to see and react to problems, and have the side benefit of saving taxpayer dollars. 2. The technology is very doable to have a near-real-time monitoring system in place for regulators to monitor things and react to problems much, much faster... and once it is in place, it would result in a cheaper, faster agency. And as I've said before, since you wouldn't be changing the actual rules, there is no reason why ObamaCo can't make this start to happen RIGHT NOW. Well, at least #2 anyway... #1 requires Congressional action.
  2. KW in a tough place right now, by his own doing. We all know the background, no need to rehash how we got here. Thing is, I believe he wants to move Quentin and probably Thornton, possibly AJ... and either sign MB or extend Danks. But my guess is, he isn't allowed to do either of the latter things, before first clearing payroll via the former things. The other teams know this, and are making it a tough sell. KW is then making it sound like he doesn't have to do any of it. If the other teams call his bluff, and/or if he can't find a way to have MB or Danks signed/extended... we may see an ugly team next year. I hope Kenny can move some of those guys for decent compensation, and soon, because I still think that signing MB, at the money he'll likely get, is smarter than extending Danks for what that would cost. And doing neither would REALLY suck.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 09:51 AM) No offense, but you're sounding like "internet tough guy" personified. I was thinking 12 year old on the playground talking s*** about some high school kid.
  4. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 09:11 PM) So, I guess I don't understand. If the regulations overlap, wouldn't complying with one of them involve complying with ALL of them? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 08:48 AM) Not if the regulations themselves are contradictory from enforcement body to enforcement body. That is part of the problem. But the bigger issue, IMO, with overlapping rules is that it also means overlapping agencies. Not just the added cost to taxpayers for the redundancy, but also that the company trying to comply with them has to do the same thing, multiple times, different ways. That is just ridiculous.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 01:27 PM) 2 national polls are out today showing the predicted Gingrich surge, coupled with a little bit of fading by Herman Cain. CNN has it Mittens 24-Newt22, PPP has Newt in the lead and Mittens back at 3rd (although that poll has shown him lower than some of the other national polls). Well I guess it is Newt's turn. But I do think he has a better shot at some staying power than Bachmann, Perry or Cain had/have.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) The Federal Reserve will take advantage of the enormous room it has to fight inflation, by slowly raising rates and selling off some of the trillions of dollars worth of assets it has accumulated. More than likely, the Fed will actually be too cautious about inflation because of the sheer number of inflation hawks on the Fed, and will keep the inflation rate low enough by dragging out the unemployment crisis for a longer time. Meanwhile, Ben Bernanke will hold the largest party in the history of mankind to celebrate the fact that the fed has gone from begging congress to do something about jobs to actually doing what it is really good at. Slowly raising them to levels not seen since Carter and Reagan? How do you think 12% or 14% mortgage and corporate loan rates are going to go over?
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 11:10 AM) Please. It's entirely logical given the context. Maybe not all of the accusers, but certainly the one who wanted to become the face of it. It is entirely logical for you to be sure that someone accusing Cain of sexual harassment muxt be making it up... even though you have zero way of knowing whether or not its true? Seriously? That is the definition of an illogical, emotion/partisan driven judgment with no support in fact. Now, if you are saying you are sketpical of the claim, or that her background is fair game as part of the discussion, or that you suspect some or all may be lying... that I can understand. Saying you know for sure? Absurdity.

There's a great website whose purpose is for suggesting really ridiculous ideas in physics. Seems mostly like bored physics students, but some of the ideas are LOL'eriffic. One is the "black-hole-a-pult". You tie a really heavy object, like a rock, to a space ship... send the object towards a black hole... get up to relativistic speeds... then let go of the rock and turn. Brilliant! Also like the custard filled speedbumps. Worst part is, I had this bookmarked like 5 or 7 years ago, and now I can't find the site. Annoying.
  9. You can argue 3% vs 4% inflation currently, what's in the basket, include or exclude energy and food commodities, whatever. The point is, real inflation including energy is something like 4%, without it maybe its 3%... while we are still nowhere near fast recovery mode. So, with that level of inflation now, and all the money in the system, what do you think will happen when the economy does start to pick up steam?
  10. I've been gone a bit, two quick things... 1. When I earlier ranted about the vitriol aimed at the supposed victims of Cain, to be clear, I was NOT saying that their backgrounds are not fair game. They are. What was appalling to me was the ASSUMPTIONS being made, that they were clearly jus going for money. That made me ill. I don't assume Cain's guilt, nor do I assume the victims are perpetrating some massive unfounded conspiracy. If you are one of the people who immediately fell into one of those camps early on, then you are not dealing in logic or reality. 2. Newt Gingrich's arrogance trumps not only Obama, but everyone in that GOP field, and that is something... but, I would suggest that if Gingrich wins the nomination, he'd have a better shot at beating Obama than Mittens would. Gingrich has a unique pairing of build that no other GOP candidate has... he is seen as a true conservative AND has shown he can work both sides of the aisle at the national level to get things done. No other GOP candidate can pull that kind of support from both the right wing and the moderates/independents.
  11. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Nov 10, 2011 -> 07:50 AM) I visited the Miami campus in 1990 for a weekend. We were in bars, on campus, at lunch in the dining hall, etc. I didn't see 10 ugly girls all weekend! Conversely, I went back to Evansville and saw 10 ugly girls in the first 30 minutes back on campus. I would compare Miami to Ole Miss in the South. They have always had a reputation for having good looking women. Maybe not a ton of 10's but 7-9' all over the place. I hate to even continue this discussion, but, I feel obligated... I've been on a lot of campuses, and #1 bar-none for beautiful women was Boulder (U of Colorado).
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 10:34 AM) http://network.yardbarker.com/college_bask...refmod=backyard Top 25 hotties list. Hm. Sorry to say this Rock, but I think the Ohio State girls takes the cake for least attractive.
  13. QUOTE (spiderman @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 08:05 PM) Bruney is bad, but if he's the last reliever on the team, I'm ok with him earning that roster spot. At least he has had some success with the Sox. I doubt he's even that. I think he'll be about the 10th reliever, behind 7 major leaguers and at least two in Charlotte.
  14. With the number of accusations coming forward, its awfully hard to write them all off to ulterior motives like money, politics, etc. I'd rather not make a guess, but as there won't be any court cases, that may be all we can do. Fortunately, I never liked him as a candidate anyway, he is laughably in over his head, basically just a circus act. And he was going to tumble soon even without these revelations or whatever they are. I do find it said though, the reactions in here of people on both sides of the aisle, either automatically (and, in my view, sickeningly) assuming the claimants are money-grubbers making up a story... or on the other hand, assuming that some claim of a decade-old encounter MUST be true, and virtually rooting for it to be so. I hope you aren't all like this in "real life". Except mr genius of course, who played you all like a fiddle, which provided the best moments of the thread.
  15. Funny still that if they had simply made it an outright tax, instead of a mandated purchase, the constitutional arguments would not exist. Even though in some ways, the ultimate result is the same. I still think that a purchase mandate is one subtle difference too far, but that is just my view.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 12:16 PM) Another take on the causes of the financial meltdown, via Sullivan, that pushes the blame away from the banks a little bit: Solid article.
  17. QUOTE (Greyone @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 12:32 PM) Like Ace said, isn't this the exact same thing that happened with Konerko, let him find the best offer out there and give the Sox the last chance. I think we all need to relax just a bit, we don't even know what the offers are yet. And if Phil Rogers is saying he's gone then that is a good sign, because he is mostly wrong on Sox news. It was a damn good 5th post.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 07:58 AM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ct-sp...,0,411518.story Always fun to see NDFA's and other independent league pickups actually do well. Axelrod to the majors, Kloess and Remenowsky making their way up. Axelrod not technically NDFA though, he was drafted then let go. Last true NDFA to make the team, I think, was Ehren Wassermann. Remenowsky may be next.
  19. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) The NBA doesn't have anything that matches the first two rounds of the NCAA tourney for me. 100% agree. I prefer watching basketball when the players are focused on winning games.
  20. I'm willing to see the Sox overpay, a bit, for a few more years of Mark. And I'd rather they do that than extend Danks, who will cost a lot more in money and years.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) http://www.businessinsider.com/found-the-m...-morgan-2011-11 How does a speedy liquidation process result in $700M ending up in a custodial account at another bank? And who had customer control of that account? Seems bizarre to me. MF Global is a self-clearing entity, they have no need to have large monies held in custody by another self-clearing entity.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) Groupon finally IPO'd today at 20. Its been up over $31, trading in the middle 28's now. I'm highly skeptical of Groupon's value. Not as skeptical as I was about LinkedIn, which was laughable... but there is a disturbing trend in Groupon's performance. Specifically, companies that use Groupon don't tend to stick around long and do more deals. They don't see the value in it. That seems like a huge red flag to me, and brings into question their ability to keep growing. Instead of growing then leveling, they may grow then drop off a cliff.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 12:31 PM) but that's a terrible teaching method. And that quote that he doesn't like walks because it sets up double plays was quite accurate. I think its a very good method - because I think part of the problem with Sox hitters last year was sphincter factor. Dunn in particular needs to take fewer marginal pitches. And the quote was nowhere near accurate. Come on, didn't you study journalism? How can you say that this: "Manto doesn't like walks because it sets up double plays" is the same as this... "Do we want adam dunn taking a ball off the plate with a man on third and justin verlander pitching?" "why wouldn't you want that" "It sets up a double play, he can drive that run in...it's not going to be a high scoring play anyway" They are not the same at all, because one is highly situational - which by the way was one of the major gripes people had with Sox hitters in recent years, was not hitting situationally. The first quote is utterly false, the second one is what Manto thinks of a certain situation. Saying those quotes are the same as me saying "I don't like beer because it gets me drunk" is the same as "once I've had a couple beers and I'm driving home, I don't want to have another beer because I might be too intoxicated to drive". They are not the same, at all.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 11:34 AM) "Do we want adam dunn taking a ball off the plate with a man on third and justin verlander pitching?" "why wouldn't you want that" "It sets up a double play, he can drive that run in...it's not going to be a high scoring play anyway" So of course, the earlier story that Manto doesn't like walks because they set up a double play was nowhere near what was actually said. I'm shocked. I actually agree with this quote anyway. Guy on third with less than two outs, I want people swinging the bat too, if it is a hittable pitch.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 10:38 AM) Mully and Hanley. Here is the link to the podcast. Can't listen right now, but I'd like to hear what he actually said, from someone not working on the 7th grade rumor mill method.
