  1. Jas, yeah, the O-Line deserves a lot of the blame, but its ALSO true that Cutler was not sticking to the game plan. He was trying to do too much, held onto the ball too long. The Martz-designed offense gives up blitz slots in exchange for a friendlier zone downfield - which means that the QB needs to get the ball off faster or go to the underneath dump. Cutler didn't do well at that at all, so he does deserve some part of the blame here.
  2. I love that at the end of the game yesterday, the crowd was chanting "Nan-Cee!". She will be missed, she was fantastic. QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 09:35 PM) Boyer is currently working on hiring a new organist Really? That's most excellent, because I thought they'd just drop the organ thing.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Does Daley? Despite his recent struggles, a lot of people in Chicago still love Daley. Rahm doesn't have that kind of capital int he city, at least not yet, among the every day voters.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 10:19 AM) It's still very socially acceptable and even preferable to hate, mock, demean and demonize gays in this country in 2010. Yes, the situations are completely comparable. Tell me more. You know, while I disagree with Jenks' take that this is no big deal, I actually agree with the comparison he's making here. If the same University says its OK for Dinner Jacket to visit, but not this guy, that is somewhat inconsistent. They are not identical of course, but the theme is the same - people in positions of authority spouting off hateful rhetoric. Now, I will say this - if I'm the AG, and one of the Assistant AG's did something like this, I'd fire him. Part of what you sign up for as a public official is a standard of conduct. This guy didn't just say he disagreed with the lifestyle - he called them satanic, stalked him, etc. This is not a stable man, I'd expect my people to behave at least somewhat professionally in the community, and this is at-will employment, so... see ya later.
  5. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) I feared that He's machine, and he's a guy who gets things done. So, like with Daley, you get the good and the bad. You get a guy who will probably run the city well, and keep Chicago humming along. But you also get a city where you know that 10% of your tax dollars are going to graft. Alternatively, you can have a mayor who might actually clean things up, or try to (I doubt anyone can really clean house in a big way), but probably doesn't function as well. Or worst of all, you might get a corrupt mayor who is also ineffective. Pick your poison.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 09:54 AM) Ok, I must confess ignorance on Rahm. Is he a machine guy? Anti-machine? A guy will clean up the machine/"inside deals"? Machine through and through.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 07:35 AM) Although Jenks is technically under team control, it'd cost $10 millionish to offer him arbitration this offseason. The odds of that happening are about the same as the odds of the Sox getting a top 15 draft pick. Yeah I know, Jenks is 99% sure to leave. I was just replying to the idea that the Sox have only one arm under control, which isn't the case.
  8. QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 05:19 PM) well liney is otechnically the only one under contract for next season. if we deal him, it will be for another bad contract. if the numbers were ok, i wouldnt mind a fukudome for liney swap. fukudome can at least plat some D and get on base. Thornton's option was picked up, Pena has another arb year I believe, same for Jenks, and youngsters like Sale and Santos are still under team control. So actually, the only bullpen arm not under team control in 2010 is Putz, I think.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:47 PM) I don't understand how someone can't fall asleep on an overnight flight that's longer than 5 hours. If I get tired then I fall asleep, longest flight I had was Atlanta to Rome (or Frankfurt whichever one was longer) and that wasn't as stupid long as Miami to Johannesburg or LAX to Sydney, but still almost a half a day. If I didn't sleep on that I'd probably slit my wrists. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) Fear of flying. The last time I fell asleep on a flight was in 2006 when I was flying home from Rio on a 13 hour flight. We were over the Venezuelan coast when we hit some moderate turbulence and I felt like I was plummeting to the ocean below with my eyes closed. Woke up and the call attendant lights were being reset and freaked out. Was convinced we were crashing for the next 5 hours until we passed Bermuda. Haven't been able to sleep on a plane since. I can't speak for Rex, but its not fear of flying for me. I actually like flying (though I hate the current affair of getting TO the plane). Problem is, I've never been able to sleep in cars or planes. I think its that I just can't sleep sitting up. Also, being 6'3" with broad shoulders, I'm usually pretty cramped into my seat, which doesn't help. I've probably done an overnight flight a couple dozen times in my life, and I was able to actually fall asleep for two of those.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 11:05 AM) I'm a very supportive fan, but I follow Sox fan rules, if they are out of it or suck, I dont go. Sox fan rules? Sounds like fair weather fan rules to me. The Sox are my team, good or bad.
  11. Let's put it this way. Balta was a bit strident to have titled his article link that way, because this is not "what it means", its "a sad sign of what hate can do". Jenks, you responded by creating a straw man, which adds nothing to the discussion. Just saying, maybe both of you could use a little less hyperbole and silly talking points.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) I think it's ridiculous to point to these unfortunate events as a microcosm of something bigger. My point is that homosexuals are not the only "minority" that gets teased/ridiculed/outcasted to the point where the begin to suffer from issues like depression which may lead to suicide. To say that this one sad event is what it means to be gay in the United States equally "ruins" reasonable discussion on the issue. You are making two opposing points here. You are saying that other minorities are treated badly, but then saying this event isn't part of one of those minorities' reality. Which is it? Balta didn't pin an argument on others who didn't say it - that is what you did.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 09:18 AM) Because homosexuals are the only ones that fit that description. Why the need for the straw man here? What was pointed out, correctly, is that they tend to have higher occurances of these things. No one is saying its not true of anyone else, other than you. This is the kind of s*** that ruins any reasonable discussion.
  14. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 10:14 PM) Sox are now guaranteed second place after that win. That also damn near eliminates them from the top 15th pick. That was never happening anyway. By the time they were really out of it, they would have had to go like 2-18 to even make it possible.
  15. QUOTE (joeynach @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) Ok well then selling the Cell makes no significant changes to the White Sox since it doesnt change their terms of the lease or contract. Unless the Sox themselves buy it. Or if the buyer then goes bankrupt.
  16. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) Cowley said that they are making an all out run at it next year and then they will go from there. He felt that AJ, Jenks and Konerko would be let go but the money would be reinvested into the team. I put zero stock in what Cowley "feels", he's wrong more often than not. Jenks is almost certainly gone, but I've seen pretty strong indications that AJ has very little demand around the league, and I doubt the Sox would turn down a chance to get him for one more year on the cheap. They are not convinced that Flowers is ready. Konerko, well, that's a tough one. Certainly they want him back, but, the money just might not work.
  17. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) When KW was on ESPN1000 a few days ago with Bruce Levine he brought up the possibility of rebuilding in the near future. With the attendance down and the Economy still uncertain, I can see two things happen. 1. KW will work with his 'set payroll'. He doesn't know the number yet based on next year's revenue projection. But he has done this the past 3 seasons. Trying to win and get younger on the fly. It worked in 2008, the problem now is Minnesota- with their new stadium and higher payroll, it will be hard to compete with that. 2. Complete roster overhaul. Making trades. Letting veterans like PK, Jenks and AJ walk. Give guys like Viciedo, Morel and Flowers a chance to have a full season of MLB work. Rebuild the farm by trading guys like Buerhle and Quentin. Perhaps even trading Peavy at the trade deadline after he proves he is healthy to a team like New York or Boston. I honestly wouldn't be too upset with option number 2. But I highly expect KW to give it one last crack and it if it doesn't work by June, blow it up. I highly doubt that KW ever indicated rebuilding was coming up. He has never said that, and in fact has always said that its something he and the Sox just don't do. I'd like to see this quote.
  18. Why is Paulie out? Seems like he's missed a few games lately, and he's still marginally in the MVP discussion. Why bench him at all this last week? Let the guy play out what may be his last week with this team.
  19. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 02:34 PM) That's exactly what I mean. To say that a pitcher is probable to come back from an injury that never happens to pitchers is, I believe, just pretty hopeful. That's why I listen to the people who seem to actually know something about it, which is not me. We've had ptatc talk about it here, we've seen quotes from his doctors, we've seen other information derived from experts. They all indicate a likely positive outcome. Probable does not mean definite.
  20. If Mitchell and Phegley look healthy out there (they don't even have to look all that great), this will be great.
  21. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:51 AM) If the Sox offer him $6 million a year I would be SHOCKED. That would be about double his market value. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. Well crap, I thought he was making $3M for some reason. I'll edit - I suspect they offer him in the vicinity of $3M for a year, or maybe $2M and a team option at $3M, or the like.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:43 AM) It's now 4 of 5 games they have given up 10+. In one of those starts Liriano left with the flu and then the bullpen got rocked. But the other three were s***ty starts by Pavano, Slowey, & Blackburn. Mauer hasn't played since the 19th due to knee inflammation. Thome has been out for a week with back issues. Hardy has been out with migraines too. Other than that I think most of their regulars have been playing most games. The offense has been fine for the most part. Getting shut down by Verlander is normal, all though last night they couldn't score on the mighty Sean O'Sullivan. Mauer and Thome are nursing small injuries. But they could also just be cooling off - they've been better than anyone could have envisioned since June.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) I'd be shocked if AJ was offered arbitration. I'll bet money the Sox offer him a 1 year deal, maybe with a 2nd year team option, for about what he's been making the last few years, and AJ will jump at it because he won't get anything better elsewhere. This also allows Flowers to get back on track in AAA. And I think that's the right path.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) I don't see any reason to think that that is probable. You mean other than the fact that everything reported so far has him ready for Spring Training? I mean, obviously, with an obscure injury like this, you never really know. But everything said about the nature of the injury and the surgery, and rehab so far, indicates things are as good as can be expected. So yeah, I'll stick with probable.
  25. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) Seven votes shy would indicate Dems voted against the bill, no? So CNN full of....oh fuggedaboutit.. That would mean probably 4 Dems, give or take, voted against it. So I'd say CNN calling it a GOP block is accurate, given they all voted against it.
