  1. So, I'll probably get laughed off for this, but here goes... what about trading to get Carter back? Anyone think that's even possible?
  2. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 10:07 PM) Rice and Dawson are the two guys in recent memory whose inductions bother me. And when I saw that Dawson had a chance, I thought "If Rice is in, I guess Dawson will get in, too." And the voters won't let Blyleven in. I personally think Murphy should be in over either of those two. His offensive numbers, when you consider WHEN he played, combined with stellar defense, makes him a better candidate IMO. And Bly should be in, I hope he gets it on this next try.
  3. Charlie Shirek was looking like a trade piece in the first half this year, putting up very solid numbers for the most part (except the low K rate). Then he got hurt, but he's back now, injury was apparently minor. He's a guy who might get moved, as part of a deal. He's got a far higher ceiling than Torres, but isn't major-league ready yet.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) Nic Cage hasnt made a quality movie since Raising Arizona edit: well, I did like Waking the Dead and Matchstick Men, so maybe not entirely true. But a movie where he gets to play his Con Air character is never good do you mean Bringing Out the Dead?
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 11:29 AM) Have you honestly seen a good slider from him though? I sure haven't. As I keep repeating, he has a plus change-up though that will really benefit him. Seems odd, when I've watched Hudson this year, both times he seemed to START the game with good slider and angled tilt on the FB... but as the game goes on, they both flatten out. Just my perception though, maybe I'm wrong.
  6. You have season seats for that game, so you have LD and UD access - use them. Walk around, you'll find lots of things to see.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:55 AM) traitor. You should have seen the looks I got from some other guys in this "regiment". I'd say something, they'd look at me, ask where I was from... told them Chicago... they'd usually either laugh or just stare at me like I had two heads.
  8. I didn't see this said, but may have missed it in a very long thread. 2010 draft is too early to really evaluate, but 2008 and 2009 were both very good. Part of the reason 2009 may not seem great right now is injuries - all of the top three players drafted in 2009 (Mitchell, Thompson, Phegley) are not playing due to injury or illness. That will take a HUGE bite out of ANY system, having your 1-year-back draft lose its top 3 picks. But of course, KW's style is to trade away most prospects of value. That combined with some bad drafts in the few years before 2008, and voila, you have a weak system. If 2010's draft turns out well, and if the Sox don't trade away a bunch of the few good prospects left, this system will probably start to look at lot better next season. For now, though, they are near the bottom.
  9. QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:25 AM) Jesus I just looked at Gilmore's stats, he has 4 homers and 63 RBI's?! That's insane haha. His BA with RISP has gotta be very high.... .408 AVG w/ RISP. That's good. Also helps he's had Brandon Short leading off in front of him, and often getting into scoring position.
  10. QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 08:30 AM) I would guess that 90% of most people's interaction with government employees is at the DMV. The other 10% is probably law enforcement or the legal system. Yeah, and in that 90% are people mostly who aren't going to be very engaged at their job. And in the other 10% of course, you won't care if they are or not.
  11. I just looked at G Johnson's final numbers at Kanny - he had a 3.24 GO/AO. Wow.
  12. Garrett was promoted to High A Winston-Salem some time recently, not sure exactly when. He's been doing reasonably well in A ball this year, so maybe he's not entirely off the prospect radar. 6'10" lefty reliever who can induce a lot of ground balls, that probably has value. His final #'s from Kanny this year: 29 G 44 IP 35 H 18 ER 2 HR 17 BB 39 K 3.68 ERA 1.18 WHIP .219 AvgA 3.24 GO/AO (wow) 7.98 K/9 3.47 BB/9
  13. Tough loss for Doyle. I hadn't realized Garrett Johnson was promoted to W-S. I guess I should update his AAP thread, he kind of dropped off the radar last year.
  14. Shirek calming down a bit, looked OK but not great. Hopefully he finds a groove again, because when he was rolling, he looked like he was headed for AAA. Serafin not adjusting well to High A so far. As for Gilmore, hard to read a whole lot in to # of errors, but that is a big number. His lack of power worries me less than others, because he hits for high average and its a lot easier to AVG into SLG than the other way around.
  15. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 01:25 PM) Nice job, it just sucks (in my eyes) seeing us have a back-up catcher and a 4th OF at #4 and #8. I would have put Jose Martinez on the list over Gartrell. I think Daniel Wagner should have gotten some consideration as well. Terry Doyle is another that could be argued. Yes he's 24 in high A ball, but he was 22 years old when drafted and he's putting up great numbers this year. I could see him ending up in AA this year at 24 years old. We've already decided that Flowers and Danks are backups? A bit premature I think. I agree on Martinez over Gartrell, but there are still big question marks with Martinez, and he needs to continue development. He missed a lot of time. Doyle was discussed, people are aware of him, and he's definitely worth watching.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 08:09 AM) Hudson will end up being just fine. He might struggle the rest of the way, but he has impressed me with his ability to make the hitter miss. It's not like he's getting hit hard by big league hitters. There's a few mechanical adjustments that need to be made, and hopefully he gets confidence in his slider. He's going to be a huge part of this franchise going forward. Good post.
  17. The NPS generally has very good staff. They get 10 times more applications than they have positions in good times, more in bad. Jobs like that, there are always passionate people who WANT to do the job, so you get a lot of good people who you don't have to pay a ton of money for. Shiloh? When I was loving in Tennessee, I had a buddy who was a teacher and a history buff. He was a "Sergeant" in the 37th Tennessee regiment that did re-enactments, and he convinced me to tag along on one. Dressed the part, did the marches and the battle simulations, the whole bit, over a weekend at Shiloh. Great experience, even for a Yankee, though it was a little weird dressing with the grey coats.
  18. QUOTE (SuperSteve @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) That sounds awesome. How is the camping? I would be concerned for waking up stiff after a long ride. So, on RAGBRAI, you have multiple options at each overnight town. The basic option is, there are camping areas set aside in each town (typically a park or football field, occasionally a fair grounds), and your RAGBRAI fee pays for your bag to be trucked from one to the next for you. So you get up in the morning, throw your bag on the truck, and when you arrive in the next town, your bag is waiting for you there. You can also go with a shuttle company that will sometimes add the feature of setting up a camp area for just their customers in each town - this tends to make it less crowded, which is nice. Another level up, each overnight town has a list of residents that volunteer their homes for people to either camp on their lawn, or in some cases actually stay in their house. This is kind of neat, because its quieter, less crowded, you get a real bathroom, and you get to know some nice locals. Great experience. If you go with a big team, then they also might have their own facilities, RV's, or whatever. And if you are really, really lucky, you find a hotel or motel room - but good luck getting one more than an hour after the route is announced in January. I've done all the above except for a big team. All worked fine.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 07:34 AM) Using the stock browser? I suggest the Dolphin HD browser. Yes, stock browser. Never heard of Dolphin HD - is that free on the market? And what is better about it?
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) It sounds like they're hinting at DU rounds but not explicitly stating it. There's another possibility that might be underneath this. I doubt it, but, worth considering... maybe it wasn't the US rounds that did it. Maybe it was something those rounds hit.
  21. I have a Droid Incredible, with the shipped OS (No idea what version level). Sometimes as its just finishing loading, the browser just closes on its own. Other times, it works fine.
  22. Fantastic movie, really glad I saw that.
  23. Something strange happened with this thread, its suddenly indented for me. Anyway... if anyone was considering seeing The Sorcerer's Apprentice... don't. My god was that awful.
  24. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) Kyle Shelton was promoted to Charlotte from Winston-Salem. I don't know if this has to do with the fact that Jordan Danks hasn't played in a week, but I know that Charlotte's roster was full at 24 active players before the addition of Shelton. So, a roster spot had to be cleared. Danks to the DL maybe? Jeez, the injuries just keep coming.
  25. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) We have a couple big Viciedo fans among the voters, myself included. It's really hard to argue Flowers ahead of Viciedo right now. I don't think any of the voters put Flowers ahead of Viciedo. In fact I am sure of it. He was ranked 4 or 5 on everyone's lists. Someone commented on Torres... People pretty much felt the same about him, he was 9 to 14 among voters. No one thinks he's anything great, but he has two things going for him. One, he's major league ready (to be what he probably will be - back of the rotation starter at best, or long/middle reliever), so his time value equation is better. Two, the system is really weak, so he looks good in comparison. Honestly, after the top 8, the whole rest of the list could be ranked almost anywhere - its a pool of low ceiling role players ready to go or medium potential guys further away from ready or high potential but just got started. The combo of an already thin system, some underperformers (Retherford, Nunez, Gartrell, Leesman among others) and injuries to 5 of the Top 25 guys really make the list weak. For me, a few guys who I think will jump up on the next list (just my personal view): Brandon Short, Andy Wilkins, Jose Martinez and Kyle Colligan.
