Man defends property against 'illegal' thieves....
NorthSideSox72 replied to juddling's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) Objection, your honor. You cannot assume in a case like this, and that's the point. From the beginning, aside from my "I wish he hadn't missed comment", which was more innocent than people took it, I made mention that things are not adding up and facts are missing, and we all need to get more information before coming to conclusions one way or another, which is what's going on now, and even I'm guilty of it to an extent (other than the fact they actually admitted to the theft). And I didn't wish death upon a member of this board, I wished death on some pieces of trash nobody here knows...which is no different, IMO, than wishing death on terrorist members or leaders, or even Hitler, for that matter. And if that's a rule of this board, I didn't know it. I did know, however, that wishing bad upon others present wasn't accepted, and it's not something I did. 1. You missed the point. Someone said he got shot in the face, therefore the shooter must have been in front of the trick. I pointed out, no, there are other possibilities, very logical ones, such as the one I presented. 2. You posted in the RULES thread at the top of the forum saying you agreed to them. Note in those rules that its not about just other posters, its about anyone in the public eye. Ignorance of the rules, especially when you specifically said you read them, is not an excuse for breaking them. -
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) With Silverio I think you have to assume he's the age they say he is and if it ends up being wrong, just don't be surprised. MLB has put a ton of effort into getting this right because it potentially screws over multiple teams. Assuming he is 19, he's gotta be close to the top 25 or so. I'm honestly not sure what to think of him. Close, I can see. In, I can't.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) xFIP of 4.90 definitely points toward a hard regression along with his history. Likely. Hopefully tonight.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) I get suspended for breaking forum rules from time to time. Things like calling people idiots, stupid, etc. Sometimes, I cannot *not* say what's on my mind, and I tend to tell people how I really feel rather than sugar coating it and/or shutting up. I try to be nice, but sometimes I see things here that I disagree with so much, I cannot help but to say something. And that prompts the admins who are out to get me to suspend me. LOL, yes, we're all out to get you. Just you.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) And which prospects are we going to give them? They have no need for Flowers, as catching is the only position they have youth at. Hudson's not going anywhere either. Flowers' bat is still what is seen as his highest value, despite his mediocre performance in AAA so far this year. And while I am not suggesting we SHOULD do this, there are players like Viciedo, Beckham, Danks, Morel, some relievers in the system and others that do have some value. Whether or not that would get it done, or if you even want to, is another question.
-
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) I am perfectly happy with either one. So am I, though I am hoping we can get one of them without giving up Hudson. Might not be possible.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) Completely disagree. As someone just mentioned, Berkman's a legend there. Astros aren't just going to give him away. Give? No. Be in a hurry to get a big salary off the books and get some prospects in a bad system? Heck yes. I think ultimately, LaRoche will cost more in prospects/players, but less in money, so the deals may be similar in overall effect. I'd try to widdle down deals for both as far as possible, look at each as a complete deal, and pick one. I think they will be close.
-
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) Never mind, Keith Law said that we have no chance so we might as well just stop trying. With Peavy likely out for the season, do the White Sox make a run at Cliff Lee? If not, do you see the Sox as viable contenders in the AL Central after losing their ace (at least their ace for the past month)? Klaw (1:27 PM) Even if they included Beckham, I'm not sure they could pull that off. And I didn't see them as viable contenders with Peavy, so it seems less likely now. LOL, a team that's a half game out in July and running hot, even with Peavy, wasn't a viable contender for the division? Seriously, someone try to say again that this guy doesn't have a bias against the Sox.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:05 PM) LaRoche would be a lot cheaper monetarily. Berkman is still due about $7M the rest of the way ($14.5M this year) + $2M buyout and that's assuming he drops the caveat that his $15M option must be picked up if traded. LaRoche will only make a little over $2M the rest of the way ($4.5M this year) +$1.5M buyout. But, because of Berkman's salary, I'd guess it might take fewer prospects/players in value to get him, than to get LaRoche.

2011? This thread would have been interesting a month ago, and will be interesting in October (or maybe earlier), but right now seems out of place.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:01 AM) Bruce Chen sucks, always has. So we better score like 7 runs off him tonight. This year so far: 3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 42 K in 48 IP. He may regress eventually, hopefully tonight, but this season he has been pretty solid so far.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) I'd actually reverse that order since Laroche is younger and rakes in the 2nd half each year. Fair enough. Either one is a big upgrade at DH from what we have now. I just think Berkman will outproduce LaRoche, but I could very well be wrong.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:55 AM) The guy had gunshot wounds in his face, so that would lead me to believe the man with the gun was in front of the truck at some point in time. Not at all. Passenger in the truck, right? I'd assume he was probably looking at the man yelling and then shooting at him, that only makes sense. Besides, even if he's facing forward, still can get shot in the face. You'd need a medical examiner to give you more information as to the trajectory of the bullet. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:28 AM) Back to Laroche, Fielder, and Berkman. I think Fielder is unattainable for this club. I'd focus on Berkman and LaRoche, in that order.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) Well if he is in fact older, then I agree with you on his ranking. I'm just not sure what to believe regarding his age. Yeah, to be clear, I am not saying I KNOW he's older. I'm saying, with what scant information I have seen, I'm 75% sure he's older than his stated age, by some unknown amount of years.

Again, race has zero to do with the shooting, as does the legal/illegal status, because the shooter couldn't possibly know they were illegal. The fact that they are illegal aliens simply means that they should be charged, documented, jailed, then shipped out. -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) I don't get the comparison to Sergio Miranda at all. Silverio was a Latin America signing with good offensive tools, while Miranda was a 13th round draft pick out of college with no power. Also, Miranda only had 28 at-bats at Great Falls in 2007, so comparing those numbers to Silverio's seems a bit unfair. Additionally, this notion of "professional development" under Silverio's belt makes no sense to me. He spent last season in the DSL and the year before as a 17 year old in Bristol. How does this give him a clear advantage in terms of development over Miranda who got to spend a couple years in college? One more thing, where would you rate Silverio (rough range) in our system? I mean, it's not like we have a wealth of high-upside guys, so he's got to be close to top 25 IMO. I think its a very good comparison, but apparently we disagree. And you'll note the real comparison was Miranda in A ball, vs Silverio in Rookie Ball. I'd put him in the 30-40 range in the current system. And I am still highly skeptical of his age.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:44 AM) Now, I don't mean to come off as a condescending prick...but all of these things you speak of, who decides what is illegal and not, what crimes are serious and what are not will differ greatly from person to person, depending on background, culture, where they're from, where their parents are from, the things that they've experienced in their lives, etc. Pretending everyone should act just like you or think just like you is ridiculous. Pretending the way you think is the only "right" way is also ridiculous, and this also pertains to me, and my own opinions toward others. But in my view, it's ok for different people to think differently about such matters, as to some of us, these matters are of great concern, and to others, such things are so out of sight/out of mind, they don't really matter, but we just like to comment on them anyway. Some people will choose to see the best in people, even if there are people in this world that have no "best". Thinking differently is fine, expressing it is fine. But in this forum, under these rules, as we have stated generally AND to you directly before, it is NOT OK to threaten or wish for violence or death on others. You crossed that line. I'd leave this alone now if I were you, and stop playing the victim card, trying to make it out like others are suppressing your freedoms. This isn't the street, this is a privately owned website that has given you privilege to post as long as you follow certain rules. Please try to do that. -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 09:06 AM) Illegal or legal immigrants has no bearing on this whatsoever. They were on his property illegally trying to steal his possession. That alone is not just cause for the use or attempted use of lethal force. However, if they did indeed try to run this man over I have no problem with him shooting at them. The story says he saw them from his window, yelled at them, and fired as they fled. Then later he's quoted as saying they tried to run him over. Seems there are some inconsistencies in his story, so I tend to be skeptical of his claim that they tried to run him over. Needs further investigation. And I doubt the cops would have asked for all those charges if their investigation led them to believe he really was being threatened. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 08:27 AM) Well, if this gets done, it's good news for the White Sox. Agreed. Twins don't get him, the Sox won't be tempted to, and we can focus on a bat (hopefully).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 08:16 AM) The only way to make that point is to ignore decades of what creationism has stood for. It means individual species specially created, perhaps within the last 6000-10000 years, no macroevolution, things created pretty much as they are now. That's a very far leap from theistic evolution, which posits evolution as scientists understand it as a 'tool' for God. eg Ken Miller vs. Ken Ham. I don't think that is what Kap was trying to say, but I'll leave it to him to respond.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 07:39 AM) Theistic evolution =/= creationism, though. I didn't say they were equal. I said, most people believe in God in some form, most people agree that evolution is real, therefore most people believe both exist. That being the case, they have to be related, at some very basic level. And I think that is what Kap was getting at (though him saying they were the same is a stretch).

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 07:59 AM) I guess allowing people to shoot illegals and not legals would solve a problem for some folks. I'd prefer to treat each human life the same. Imagine hoards of hunters gunning down illegals. It would be heaven to some groups. I'll stop with the Kaperbole The problem with allowing him to try to kill these guys is there are legit reasons for someone to be taking his trailer. The guys may have been taking a repo. Then we have the property owner saying I thought they were stealing it. Allowing anyone with a gun to be judge and executioner for property crimes is something we probably do not want. What if he was saying to his neighbor, sorry that bullet went through your window and killed your son, but dammit, they were taking my trailer, you understand?" I can't believe the thieves are not charged yet. Even to use the worse reason to charge them, the politics. The fact that they might be illegal aliens is irrelevant to the shooting aspect of this, since there is no way the shooter could have known that one way or the other. These need to be looked at as seperate things. What the shooter did went well beyond reason and probably into the criminal (though I'd contend not Murder 1). What the thieves did was criminal as well. Further, the thieves were also in the country illegally. -
Let's put Silverio's performance in perspective with a comparison. He's 19 this season, started in Low A where he was awful (.128/.169/.218/.387, 19 K vs 2 BB in 78 AB), then got sent to GF. Now he's raking at GF. In 2007, we drafted a 20 year old shortstop named Sergio Miranda. Miranda was a year older (or maybe not older at all), and without the benefit of multiple years of professional development under his belt, ALSO raked at GF, then did well in Low A his first year. 2nd year, struggled at High A, went back down and raked at Low A, and then basically fell into minor league obscurity in the Brewers organization. I guess I'm saying, since the guy is probably at LEAST 20, and has a couple years of minor league work under his belt, he really should be raking in Great Falls. And he apparently wasn't yet ready for A ball. He's not among my Top 25 prospects in the organization right now.

Doesn't seem like Murder 1 to me, that's excessive, but I'd agree that he should be charged criminally to some degree for the shooting. IT was completely over the top and unreasonable. Of course, the dudes who stole the trailer also need to be charged for larceny and evasion, and that doesn't seem to have happened yet here.
