Part of the issue here isn't just Bobby maybe losing the game. Even if he manages to end this thing for the Sox win, it sort of takes away some of the vibe from a good win. That has an effect on players that are already paranoid after too many losses.

Pull him out.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 26, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) He's been throwing hard all season and a good portion of last year and it's really meant nothing. That's kind of what I am getting at - seems like velocity isn't dropping, so I doubt its an injury. Just trying to eliminate possibilities.

MLB gamecast shows Bobby's FB at 95-96. Does that jive with TV?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) less than 2 months ago Obama was defending big oil and saying that there really was no risk to drilling offshore. Using the Republicans own lie about there being no oil spills after Katrina/Rita to do it. Obama said nothing of the sort. Further, the "Republicans" didn't say that either, one or two SPECIFIC ones did.

Meanwhile, you are all patting each other on the back for thinking that this is about Obama protecting BP... and ObamaCo is ratcheting up talk of major debarrment of BP from government contracts, which would be a giant problem for BP. Both those numbers, McCain's and Obama's, come from the same s***ty data sourcing - the idea that individual contributors who work for companies are necessarily doing so with any relationship to the company. All that data is garbage, whether used against D's or R's. I think you will see the Feds to not a complete debarrment (due to the heavy defense industry reliance on BP), but one that basically stops all new BP drilling and extraction efforts in the US, and removes all contracts for work on federal lands, and probably throws in some serious fines and other penalties.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) Mark Kotsay is intentionally walked to get to Carlos Quentin. If we lose this game, that's my game wrapup title. Could also work if TCQ comes up big here and the Sox win.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 26, 2010 -> 11:05 AM) 5 starters in baseball put up an ERA below 3.10 with at least 500 IP between '07 and '09 (3 pitched the majority of their innings in the AL), 5 AL starts put up a sub 3.50 ERA over that same time span. (11 in baseball) So I was close (5 vs 3). Its silly to say that a 3.50 ERA over any 3 season span for a starter is anything other than very good. And 3.00 is perennial Cy Young contender territory.
-
QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 26, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) We're not paying him to have around a 3.50 ERA. IF you are investing huge assests (in this case money) in him, one that could fix other holes, he has to be really damn good, like Rios has been this year. Seeing as how nobody would take Jake Peavy right now, all we cna do is hope he turns it around like Rios did this year. Not sure if you noticed, but a consistently 3.50 ERA starting pitcher IS really damn good. If you are looking for a guy to put up a 3.00 over multiple years (say 3 or more), you are looking at how many pitchers in baseball? Maybe 2 or 3 in the whole game?

A Cold Weather Super Bowl!

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 26, 2010 -> 09:57 AM) This is dumb. The two best teams should have the best field available so they can showcase their skills. The more random luck/shoddy field conditions involved, the worse it is for everyone. Watching a game in snow is cool for about a minute, then you realize it's a terribly played game and it's just garbage football. I want a football game to have the athletes running, jumping, hitting, and cutting to the best of their abilities in the most important game of the year. In football particularly, weather is not random or unrelated to the game - its very much part of the game. Its a winter sport. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 26, 2010 -> 10:01 AM) Just remember that months ago I said the Euro was heading for disaster and you all called me crazy. Keep in mind that this is just beginning. Someone called you crazy? I don't remember that. I have to admit that I didn't think the Euro would get hit THIS hard (or that the debt crisis would work in quite this way), but the inherent weakness was clear.

A Cold Weather Super Bowl!
NorthSideSox72 replied to hogan873's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Football is played in lots of climates, in winter. Therefore, the Superbowl should be too. Better than this New Jersey scenario, I think football should work like every other sport, and be played at the home stadium of the team with home field advantage. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 07:57 AM) Really, no they're not. Yeah I agree, the Cubs are not an upper echelon team at all. I think if things go well, they are a 3rd place team in the NLC. Could be 4th or lower if things don't go well.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 26, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) Long-term you have to imagine Lucy is the backup catcher, but for this year, Castro is getting paid more money and Lucy has an option (that has already been exercised so there's no need to worry about it anymore). For a position that is not vitally important, you may as well get whatever you can out of the $800k that Castro is being paid. It is kind of funny/scary to consider that the Sox could have a very experienced pitching staff being caught by two rookies next season. On that last part, since Lucy has been good at pitcher and game handling, I am hoping that he is helping Flowers in that regard down in Charlotte. In many ways, those two have complimentary skills that they could learn from each other.
-
So, if the Sox win today, that's their second series in a row. Go team.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 25, 2010 -> 11:45 PM) Sample sizes suck, but just trying to be an ass here... (same # of ABs) Castro: 6 GMs- 2/15 0 2B 2 R 0 HR 2 RBI 2 BB 5 SO 0 SB 0 CS (.133/.235/.133/.369) salary: 800K Lucy: 7 GMs- 5/15 3 2B 2 R 1 HR 2 RBI 2 BB 3 SO 1 SB 0 CS (.333/.444/.733/1.178) salary: 400K To Castro's defense though (pun kind of intended there), he has a better percentage of runners thrown out though not sure which pitchers each guy has had as I'm too lazy too look that up. Lucy is going to be better defensively over a long haul, I have no doubt. And has better speed and athleticism. Both catchers have good reputations for pitcher handling. Castro is not a great hitter, but probably would be a bit better than Donny long run. That's a question mark though - Lucy hasn't had enough major league AB's to say that for sure. Overall, I'd rather have Lucy, especially for half price, and the fact that he's on the better side of the age curve.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 25, 2010 -> 08:12 PM) Ahh, there's the socialism we all know and love. But wait, someone else will drill it. Chinese Oil LTD. We can just buy it from them. Socialism? Actually its capitalism. The US as a customer of BP's has decided they are done getting screwed, so they are going to go to their competitors.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 25, 2010 -> 08:07 PM) 50, no 100, no, 1,000 EXXON's! No, wait, this just in... 10,000! OMG! And because of BP's attitude on this and other enviromental f***-ups being similar to yours, the feds are now considering barring BP from at least all future new contracts for drilling, and possibly a complete barring from all gov't contracts at all, which would be devastating to the company.

Nick Ciolli has K'd in 47 of his 151 AB's. That is awful.

W-S up 2-1 on S in the 7th Savannah beat Kanny 3-2 in 13 innings, in the first game of a DH. Miggy Gonzalez in last 10 games: .323/.364/.516/.880. Savannah up 2-1 on Kanny in Game 2.

2010 Minor League Catch-All Thread

QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 25, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) Not that I'm surprised, but Buck Coats was promoted to Charlotte. Thanks for the spark, Buck. But, this leaves us with a question, how can Charlotte carry 26 active players? Nobody has been released, demoted or put on the DL. Robbie Hudson and Adam Ricks are still active on the Knights roster, but haven't played in a few days. Clevelan Santeliz pitched on the 22nd, but is still listed as injured. B'ham, W-S and Kanny all have open roster spots. Kind of surprised that Ricks is still there, with Flowers and Lucy on the roster. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2010 -> 11:46 AM) Somehow I think NK has more to lose than SK in all of this... I'd actually suggest that the people of NK have a lot to gain - its the NK leadership that has a lot to lose.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 25, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) He'll be our only representative IMO. If D1 can get some run support and pick up a few more W's, I think he's there too.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2010 -> 09:01 AM) Dow is down another 200 at the open, under the big 10,000 level. Euro debt crisis sinking in for Spain now, fears getting bigger, plus North Korea acting childish. Today is definitely event-driven.

I love that there is a minor league team called the Sand Gnats.
