QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) He was the one glimmer of hope during the 1989 season. Essentially he was the stopgap between Walker and Thomas (which is exactly what we may need?) His son is an OF in the Sox minor league system as well, though he missed all of last season with an injury.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 5, 2010 -> 09:16 AM) I wasn't commenting on what McCain said. I was referring to the Lieberman quotes that AHB posted as insane. That isnt something based on suspicion. I read that as something that would come about as a result of a conviction. Sorry, I meant Lieberman. I get my rebels mixed up. As long as we're talking about CONVICTION, and as long as they have some other country to go back to (what if they were born and raised here?), then I agree with you.

Just noticed that Lucy made his Charlotte debut in game 2 of the doubleheader, went 2-3 with a double.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 5, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) No, but neither is Greene, And as long as the former two are hitting the ball, they aren't going to be pushing them aside for a similar player in a level below. I don't know a lot about Kuhn but Sanchez has a major league body. He probably has a 5% chance or less of ever being a major leaguer, but it's worth keeping him around to find out. Yeah, I think I'd put Greene, Kuhn and Sanchez in a similar bucket as being "marginal prospects". Though I think Greene has better potential than the other two, so he'd slot just a little higher. Not enough so to bump anyone out of the way, though. I like the idea mentioned eariler - Mollenhauer looks awful, so send him back down, Kuhn has played SS and 2B before so he can play there again, and promote Greene.

The Sox have some injury-prone OF's, so while no one in their right mind would think he's here to replace CQ, it probably is true that they want some extra OF depth in the minors in case CQ, Andruw or both hit the DL (Gartrell or De Aza or Danks would move up, leaving a hole in AAA).

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 5, 2010 -> 09:08 AM) Ugh. Not shocked by this response but whatever. In no way should this be applied like a 1690's Salem situation as you are implying, but if there was an incident like the one that just occurred and a person was found guilty beyond a reasonably doubt, I don't see why this would be such a big deal or bad thing. Charges that come with terroristic acts are not all life sentences keep in mind. And I'm not saying I'd fully support this, but I definitely see no reason to just poo-poo it or blow it off as 'insane'. I think you sort of missed what McCain said - he said SUSPECTED. What you describe here is CONVICTED. That is a huge difference. No one should ever lose their citizenship based on suspicion alone, of anything.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 04:25 PM) Well, I'd argue this was an example of something that went from impossible to possible, but I'll leave it at that. I agree 95% with what you're saying. That's fine, as you said, we'er basically on the same page on the topic generally.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ May 4, 2010 -> 08:00 PM) You know what's sad? That no one in the national media is paying much attention to this Middle Tennessee/Nashville flooding. Billions of dollars of damage have occurred to the city of Nashville and tens of thousands are homeless. But no, let's not act like this is a big deal. That and the NY bombing attempt are all that's on the news. Not sure what makes you think no one is paying attention.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ May 4, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) Brandon Short vying for the 2nd best OF in our system with Trayce Thompson. Thompson had a tough night, but he seems to be holding his own for the most part so far. For anyone that has seen Short, is he a potential CF option in the future, or is his arm too weak? Short's plate discipline needs some work, but he's definitely worth watching. I'd still rank at least 3 or 4 other outfielders in the system ahead of him at this point.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ May 4, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) Was that you, NorthSide? Surprisingly no, I would not have suggested that. He may have been great last year, but he was still in A-ball, that would be ridiculous. Rad and Logan were both specialists filling a need that the team had a deep hole in. Rem is not that guy.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) Because the thing that made it possible was the record warm temperatures combined with high humidity. Cut the temperature even slightly, less water in the air, this storm becomes vastly weaker. So as I said, you cannot scientifically connect the event to it. You can say it was caused by record heat and humidity, which happen often in different places. I'm just tired of anyone - pro of con - trying to prove or disprove global warming on the basis of one weather event, or a few weather events, or a season or even a year. Its prepostorous, and it doesn't add anything to the dialogue. Now if you want to say, over a period of years, that these sorts of events may be more likely to occur... then I'd agree.

QUOTE (smalls2598 @ May 4, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) Just saw this on Deadspin; it's an excerpt from the book Are We Winning? about the Bartman incident. Thought some of you Cub haters would like to relive that moment.. Deadspin Link Well written indeed. I felt so bad for that guy, because it truly could have been any fan, of any team.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 03:49 PM) That wasn't just a 500 year event. OK... explain to me how that particular event - not the tendency for more things to occur more frequently, but this INSTANCE - was directly caused by global warming, and nothing else. Anyone else feel free to do the same for the DC snows, and how it was evidence that global warming DOESN'T exist.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) Really? It set the record for precipitation in the month of may in a day and a half. Its an outlier - its not totally outside the realm of possibility. These things happen, they have happened in other places too. its definitely an unusual event, and it MAY have been more likely to occur because of climate changes. But you simply cannot reasonably say that this single event happened BECAUSE of climate change, nor can you say it wasn't a 500 year event happening in the 500th year. Look, I'm pretty much with you on climate change - its happening without a doubt, we're warming without a doubt, and humans are having some effect on it at least. I'm just pointing out that using any single weather event as proof of it, or proof against it, is not logically sound.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) Proving a trend requires lots of data points. Saying "This particular event is totally outside the realm of what would be expected without this set of changes" is a different thing. And the quoted statement isn't true here, nor was it true for the snow in DC.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ May 4, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) I don't think it's that silly. You have to understand, there can still be snow in winter and it be a warmer winter. The warming creates more moisture in the air, and therefore: more precipitation in both winter and summer. Just because it's frozen in the winter doesn't mean it's a sign that global warming is a hoax, it's actually quite the opposite. Its neither. It proves nothing and disproves nothing, in and of itself. You need more data points than one storm, or one winter, in one region.

Castro came off the DL, and Donny was sent back down to AAA. But it was a very successful stint in the majors for him, though short-lived, and may have breathed some life back into hopes for a major league career. His numbers with the big club: 7 G, 15 AB .333 AVG .444 OBP .733 SLG 1.178 OPS 2 BB 1/1 SB 4 of his 5 hits were for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 home run) To say this is a small sample size is an understatement. But its also an understatement to say he outperformed expectations. Lucy will now back up Flowers in Charlotte, and it may be that the team of Flowers-Lucy could be the Sox catching combo in 2010. Lucy's strong skills on defense, and handling pitchers, make him an excellent partner for Flowers.

End of April update for Dan... Remenowsky started April in his usual fashion, being a knock-down reliever with big K numbers. But had two bad outings in a row on 4/22 and 4/24, which is uncharacteristic for him - he gave up 3 ER on 5 H and 2 BB in 2.1 IP over those two outings. His last three outings though, he seems to be getting back to form. He's been sharing closing duties with Gregory Infante, and playing setup man the other half of the time. Overall for his first month, he's looking OK, though not as dominant as last year: 10 G, 14.2 IP 3.07 ERA 1.40 WHIP .250 AvgA 1.56 GO/AO 2 HR 6 BB (3.68 BB/9) 20 K (12.72 K/9) So he's still striking out a lot of guys, but not quite as spectacularly as last season. Walks are up a little, AvgA as well, and he's given up 2 HR (gave up 3 all last season). Word on the street has been that the org would try to get him in better condition and add a few clicks to the fastball, and this may be the result of those tactic. If so, we'd hope to see the control improve a little, and the AvgA start to drop. Still early for Dan in what is a key year for him, trying to show whether he's ready to move to the next level.

End of April update for Justin... After Cassel was demoted again to B-Ham, he seemed to take the message well in his first start, throwing six scoreless with no walks and 3 K's. Since then though, his other three starts have been less than stellar, giving up 9 ER in 19 innings. Here are his B-Ham numbers so far as a starter again, including all four games through May 3rd: 4 G, 19 IP 3.24 ERA 1.12 WHIP .220 AvgA 1.15 GO/AO 8 BB (3.79 BB/9) 15 K (7.1 K/9) His peripherals just aren't that great, his core numbers are OK. He's 25, turning 26 this season, and has been demoted to AA twice in the past couple years. He has basically fallen off the prospect radar, and needs to put up better numbers than this to get back on track.
-
End of April update for Garrett... Garrett has been working in middle relief in Kanny, and has looked solid thus far. His numbers... 8 G, 12 IP 1.50 ERA 0.92 WHIP .196 AvgA 0 HR 2.00 GO/AO 8 K (6 K/9) 2 BB (1.5 BB/9) 4:1 K:BB Overall very nice to see. His K and BB numbers and their rates are as good as he's shown in his career, hitters aren't getting to him much, and he's inducing a lot of ground balls. His K number should maybe be a little higher, but its not bad. Hopefully he can keep this up and get back on the radar.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 4, 2010 -> 02:42 PM) http://mapcenter.hamweather.com/records/7d...ax,highmin,snow Look at the amount of low temp records just in the last WEEK. And yeah, the same graph also shows the number of high temp records too (274 v. 203). My point is that if there was some general warming trend, it makes no sense that there would also be low temp records (especially that many). To me that just shows that weather patterns change on a daily basis. My whole point earlier is that individual outlier events - whether they be highs or lows, rains or storms - are not indiciative of a warming trend, in my eyes. So I was saying, I think Balta's trying to link these floods directly and surely to global warming was almost as silly as the people standing in snow drifts in DC this winter saying SEE, NO WARMING! They are both silly. More useful is general temperature change trends, and those are quite clearly rising.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 4, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) Career vs Hochevar: Pierre 0 PA Beckham 2/6 w/ HR Jones 0/3 w/ 3K Konerko 2/10 w/ 3BB, 2K Rios 1/9 w/ 2K (.111) Pierzynski 2/12 (.167) Quentin 1/6 w/ K Teahen 0 PA Ramirez 4/8 w/ 2B, 3BB, K Combined: 12/54 (.222) w/ 2B, HR, 6BB, 9K Hopefully a slump buster for Beckham. Also, Alexei seems to be waking up with the bat just a bit lately, this may help him along that path. Jones with the silver sombrero against him though, and hitting third. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 4, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) Wait, so lemme follow this logic train here: Record low temperatures and snow falls = nothing to get excited about Record warming temperatures and rain = proof of the existence of climate change! Ah. I get it now! And what does the bolded even mean? I swear EVERY season we hit records of some sort - hottest day on record, coolest day on record, most rain in a month, most snow in a month....blah blah blah blah blah. It means nothing IMO. Our climate system changes ALL the time and has for however long you think the earth has existed. I just find this whole notion silly since every old person alive can remember the great storm of X, or the great flood of X, or the crazy cold summer in X, or the crazy hot winter in X. It's all so random. If global warming truly existed (in this context) then we'd be seeing ONLY warming records on a SEASONAL basis. We wouldn't see cold temperature/snowfall records thrown into the middle of it. I'm still waiting for all of those devastating category 5 hurricanes and tornadoes that would repeatedly destroy the country. Unless I missed it, we haven't seen ONE in the last 5 years since those fool-proof predictions came out. The Day After Tomorrow showed how it'll happen. I've been anxiously awaiting the inevitable. While I agree with some of your general train of thought, you are incorrect on the cold end of what happened. There was no record cold, or anything of the sort. There was record SNOW. Very different.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2010 -> 12:29 PM) Sen. John McCain...now less sane than Glenn Beck. Not often I agree with Glenn Beck, but here I sure do. An American citizen committed a crime. What's difficult to understand here?

There are a couple other things the Sox got out of Konerko that are not part of those offensive numbers. For one, he's typically been an above average 1B defensively. For another, he's been both a fan favorite and a team leader. Those things all have value. Of course on the negative side, what is also not in your analysis is that he has been the slowest man on the team throughout the duration of his contract, and one of the slowest in baseball. Overall, looking at what others have been paid at similar points in their careers, I think the Paulie deal worked out pretty well. They didn't end up with an albatross contract, but they didn't get a bargain either.
