  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 09:12 AM) Here is that data expressed graphically, from CR, including today's #'s. This graph also shows well why there is still a strong worry about an unemployment and underemployment driven double-dip; we're in uncharted territory. So you are saying you think a double-dip is likely purely because the recovery has been so fast (thus far)?
  2. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 09:09 AM) The Gloader is in Philly now so the Marlins won't be nearly as good this coming season. For me, I have always liked the A's and the Giants. The A's won me over with that 20+ game win streak several years back. They were a fun team to watch with great pitching, great defense with Miggy and Chavez on the left side and a thumper in Giambi. I don't think any of those guys were clean, but ignorance was bliss at the time. Moneyball was also a great read and got me excited to watch those guys grow and develop. As for the Giants, I have no clue why I liked them, but that park sure looks like it'd be a nice place to catch a game. I'm going to have to check it out some time. Weird, I thought he re-signed with FLA. Boy, I think I have a new 2nd favorite team - the Phillies now have Gload and Wassermann.
  3. KC is a big center field too. Who are the corner OF's that will play on either side of him, as of now?
  4. Something interesting I read yesterday (can't find the link now), is that even after the 2001 recession ended (which was much less severe than this one), it took two years before job gains began. The November job gains are unexpectedly early, from that perspective. The severity of the downturn in this recession was dramatic, but it appears the rebound has been as well, at least thus far. I still think the worries about a double-dip are overblown, and as of now, most economists seem to agree (but not all). The key is still employment. We need to at least keep vaguely steady the first half of the year. We'll need some small job gains to do that, because more people will re-enter the workforce. If I were setting a line, I'd put the chances of a double-dip at 20% or a little less.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 07:46 AM) Marlins. Been following them since their inaugural season, still follow them and their minors and try to get to NYC when they play the Mets. I have developed legitimate rooting interests in them but it doesn't even come close to the Sox. Still, it's fun following a team in the other league and though they can be such a frustrating franchise to follow, they still continue to develop exciting young players. Oh, and the two championships werent such a bad thing either. Plus they have Ross Gload.
  6. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) Anchorage Alaska current temp: 32 Fort Worth Texas current temp: 19 wtf? Anchorage isn't as cold as you'd think, thanks to the ocean. Its warmer than Chicago for parts of the winter, on average. It is also, however, very dark.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) He had good range, and one of the best arms you will ever see. This. When he was younger, he had solid range, though that diminished over time - he had some knee problems. But he was a smart player to help make up for it, and he had a serious cannon. One of the strongest OF throwing arms I recall in my lifetime.
  8. Used to be the Cubs, but I am just so tired of the hoopla and hype that team gets for no good reason. I root for teams with ex-Sox players usually, like someone else said. If I had to pick a current 2nd favorite team though, I guess I'd go with the Twins.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) It finally hit me. La Cocina. I'll have to amble over there. Thanks.
  10. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 02:07 PM) Honestly, the best thing that could happen for the Senate as an institution is if someone other than Reid becomes majority leader. I think a Schumer led majority would probably have an easier time getting around the filibuster and would be less afraid to make the GOP put their money where their mouths are or use workarounds like reconciliation to get things done. I think a Harkin-led Senate would be entertaining.
  11. Ehren Wassermann has signed with the Phillies. Closing.
  12. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) Shame on you for not mentioning wasserman got picked up by the phillies. I think I'm being made fun of. Also, thanks for the news, I am glad he signed somewhere.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) There is a place right across from the CBOT that sells the real sugar coke in the bottle. It is soooo far superior, it isn't even funny. where exactly? I might need to stop by.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 06:45 PM) The only players not on there are Pierre and Dolsi. As I remember, Pierre is getting like $3 mill this year and $5 mill next year from the Sox. As such, the Sox payroll is roughly $83,375,000 without considering Danks, Jenks, Quentin, Pena, or the pre-arbitration players. I would imagine Danks getting around $3.5 mill or so, Jenks getting around $7.5 mill, Pena getting into 7 figures but not much more, and Quentin getting around $3 mill. Those are guesses, but I figure they're pretty close. That would put the Sox right around $98 mill, which means they might be able to add a small piece for about $2-4 mill, but nothing too expensive. I think $105 mill is probably the limit to the payroll but I'm expecting much closer to $102 mill. $2-4M should get it done for Thome.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 10:26 AM) We're supposed to have the longest period of below freezing tempratures in 25 years. 72 hours. That's actually crazy for Dallas. I was living in Iowa when they once went a week... below ZERO. Negative temps for 7 days straight, day and night.
  16. Someone explain to me why Dawson gets in and Murphy can't get 10%.
  17. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:54 AM) I chuckled, but Mark Teahen gets a lot of crap on this board and haven't played one game in the Sox uniform yet. I follow him (his dog) on twitter and Mark really seems like a genuine and nice guy, I realize that probably doesn't make him a great baseball player, but let's give him a chance at least. His dog?
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) Quickly skimming while at work I thought you were making the case that eventually we'll be able to catch all terrorist attempts. Oh. Yeah, no.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) I misread what that statement was intending to say. Carry on. I am at a loss - what did you think I was trying to say?
  20. They paid Viciedo for his bat. Yes, its more valuable at 3B. But that part was always a crapshoot, and now it appears they are going to play around with his location on the field a bit, because soon it will be decision time.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) Because of the level of attack that we're discussing and how nearly impossible it would be to actually prevent. The government certainly claims its prevented things and probably has. But the level of attack they always claim to be preventing is the big "Blow up the Sears tower" "Bring down the Brooklyn Bridge with a blowtorch" type of attack, where the target is always something big. I don't disagree at all. I disagree with some of you folks saying that the US gov't hasn't been able to prevent things. There is no doubt in my mind, that if federal and local agencies hadn't been working this stuff so heavily since 2001, we would have had a number of attacks here that fortunately, did not happen.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:08 AM) You really can't say that. Alright, I'll edit - "there is a very high likelihood that eventually, these types of smaller scale attacks, possible on trains, will occur". Better?
  23. Speaking of Spring Training, I noticed something new on the schedule. On April 1st, the Sox are playing a game marked as "@ CHA", in Fort Mill, SC. So, its a sort of intrasquad game, but in South Carolina. Thought that was interesting, especially since the Charlotte roster wouldn't even be fully set by then, most likely.
