  1. QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Taveras could not hit last year due to his leg injury. Though he stole twice as many bases as his previous career (34) at a much better ratio. Hm... Where you been? Post more.
  2. QUOTE (Shadows @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) Well if KW is interested in Wily T, and apparently has been for a while.. they obviously feel that he and Jerry Owens aren't the same player or there prolly wouldn't be any interest in him I put zero stock in rumors - KW may or may not be interested in Willy. And as I've said, Taveras has a good arm (Owens' is very not good), and is more of a known commodity. If someone is asking me who I'd rather have, in a vacuum, I'd rather have Taveras. But if getting him means trading a lot of value to do it, then its not worth it, IMO.
  3. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) He's also better in CF because he has been playing it longer, a better overall hitter (you can't deny his .280+ career batting average in the majors, something Owens probably can't do), faster on the basepaths and a better base stealer. Compaing Ownes to Taveras is silly. Taveras has proven to be a solid major leaguer player, a terrific one at points while Owens hasn't done squat. I don't agree that he's better in CF - other than the arm. I think Owens can definitely be a .280 hitter if he plays full time, but with no power - just like Willy. And his SB% is quite excellent, but Owens' is as well, they are fairly close. I don't see Taveras as being significantly faster or better on the paths, if he is at all. I will agree however, that Owens is less of a known factor. We have his 2007 to work from, and his minor league numbers, and that's it. ETA: On his SB%, interestingly, Taveras' numbers in his first 3 seasons were virtually identical to Owens' in 2007 in fewer games. Willy T then turned it up a notch in 2008 in the SB department. Owens has proven he can learn and improve, and Taveras was aberrantly good last year. Seems to me their career numbers are likely to end up very similar in SB%.
  4. Willy T is fine if he can be had for cheap, trade-wise. But what he is, is Jerry Owens with a better arm. So the cheap part better be real cheap.
  5. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 04:43 AM) When an American ballplayer is traded to a Japanese team it's because that player wants to play in Japan and has asked his major league team for a release/trade to a Japanese team. If he's under contract in America he can't just jump on a plane and start playing for the Ham Fighters, he first needs to be let out of that contract either through release or trade. That makes sense. I figured you couldn't trade a guy to some other league without their consent.
  6. Death toll now at 183, and India has displayed evidence of Paki involvement. Not Paki government of course, but, calls to Pakistan.
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 28, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) could a player refuse getting traded to Japan? That's what I was thinking - this can't really be a trade per se. It must be a free agent signing by the Japanese team. I was kind of upset that Wing left the system, we could really use him right now to replace Boone.
  8. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 28, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) The Tamil Tigers, a Sri Lankan insurgent organization. Theyre probably the most effective terrorist group in the world. OK, I've heard of the Tamil Tigers. Just hadn't seen that abbreviation before.
  9. QUOTE (juddling @ Nov 28, 2008 -> 12:17 PM) killing the first store employee due to Black Friday stampede in 2008....... WTF???? Already being discussed in the Black Friday thread.
  10. A Walmart employee in New York was killed and four others injured during the 5am crush to get into a store this morning. WTF is wrong with people. I mean, I don't even understand the desire to do this sort of thing to begin with. And get this... one of the injured people was a pregnant woman. What woman in her right mind does something like this while pregnant? How stupid can you possibly be? And how embarrassing for yourself to be one of these zombies mad-rushing a friggin Walmart at 5am to save a few bucks on something? Someone needs to explain this to me.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 10:20 PM) BUT JOB CREATION Well, yeah, her plan should create jobs as well - permanent manpower for Border Patrol and/or state agencies, technology project contracts, etc.
  12. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 09:29 PM) Are people sure this isn't the LTTE again? LTTE? So far, the news indications I've seen are that a group called the "Deccan Mujahadeen" has taken credit, but Indian officials are pointing to some sort of Pakistani connection, possibly from Karachi.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 04:31 PM) DHS Thank you. Exactly.
  14. QUOTE (The Bones @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) Religion teaches good morals for people to live by...er...um...something like that. Wow. You managed to apply the actions of a few terrorists to all people who participate in a religion, which is what, 90% of the world? Congratulations, that is one big paint brush.
  15. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 09:48 PM) No. They've been the target of terrorism for a LONG time. America is finally taking notice. I have family in Mumbai, but I haven't heard anything bad, thankfully. This is why I said, specifically, its on the rise. And it is. That's not to say is hasn't existed before. The 1993 events were a trigger, and there have been incidents since then. But this decade has seen a rise in terror attacks in India. I'm glad your family is all well.
  16. True, unless its a crappy movie. The person below me has recently been dragged to a chick flick.
  17. QUOTE (TCQ @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 05:08 PM) Its the context it was in. It was the title of a thread on a sports website. It was obviously meant to be funny and yes if you cant recognize that and have to jump on the fcc bandwagon and shout racism, then your ignorant. LOL "your ignorant" Seriously, I can't believe you are still whining about this. You wrote something that violated site rules, we edited your title, but didn't close the thread or reprimand you in any way. And yet you are still on this crusade. Give it up.
  18. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 04:35 PM) It is just part of the growing up process. Buh?
  19. Fun fact - The Dow is up 17% since opening last Friday.
  20. Mauer would hit 2 here, but... Mauer-Morneau > TCQ-Dye
  21. How about a President-elect? True. The person below me has rooted against the White Sox in a game before.

  23. On a personal note, I have actually stayed in the Taj in Mumbai, one of the hotels attacked.
  24. A group of gunmen with automatic weapons and grenades made a coordinated attack on multiple hotels and other locales in Mumbai, India today, killing 80 people (or 55 or 90, depending on who you ask). Supposedly still shootouts going on in at least one hotel, and there are hostages. India has been getting more and more focus from Islamic terror groups lately, and some smaller terror groups like the Naxalites have increased attacks as well. Seems that the Islamic Jihadists see India and Turkey, two of the only large and relatively peaceful countries will Muslims and other religions coexisting in large numbers, as prime targets now.
  25. True. The person below me has dated someone more than 5 years younger than they were.
