  1. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) Again, NSS, these are the posts I'm talking about. And they have been going on for a year. It's undeniable that the racist white voters are the south because they switched for race reasons only. How we somehow know their reasons I do not know. But no one switched in the north and if we did, we know it wasn't because of race. You keep not reading the posts you respond to. Posts say that as a percentage, there are more racists in those areas, and you keep interpereting that as 'ALL of them are racist'. You are the one painting with a broad brush here, not the people you are responding to. No one is saying what you think they are saying.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE... what are we up to, 80% old Clinton retreads now on his 50 or so appointments? We're up to zero, as far as I know. 2 rumored.
  3. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) I do not see them as two very different things. And how can there be anything, especially racism in a race but not in the voting? Tex - you don't see the difference? You just got through saying you feel you are a victim of painting with a broad brush. I was saying, one of those things is specific to persons, and the other was painting with a broad brush. The difference you say you don't see, is the difference you were trying to make yourself. I am done chasing you in circles. I'm dizzy and tired now.
  4. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:03 PM) I do not think you are coming off as an asshole. So historically, the south has been in favor of those laws. And in this elected, support dropped from Kerry to Obama. The connotation, as I am understanding it, is white voters, in areas that historically have not been stellar examples of racial tolerance, voted along racial lines for McCain. Therefor drawing a subtle and not so subtle accusation of racism. Those areas - the MidSouth (Oklahoma east to the southern terminus of the Appalachians) and Appalachia north to WV - will probably have more people who are racist than other areas of the country. That is the connotation. And its probably true, on a net basis. That is NOT the same as saying that anyone voting for McCain who voted for Kerry is racist. They are starkly different statements. No one is saying that you must be racist, nor is anyone saying that McCain voters are racist, nor are they saying that people in those parts of the country are all racists.
  5. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) We pause for a recap: I said that white voters who switch from the Dems to the GOP in this election have been, at times, accused of being racist. NSS said that has not been the case and find one post. You said the connotation is obvious. Well if the connotation is obvious, doesn't that mean that the connotation is that some white voters have switched based on race? And if NSS is correct, and racist has never been mentioned, what is the connotation? You might get less upset if you read my full posts. I specifically said that racism HAS been mentioned. What I have NOT seen anyone say is that voting for McCain means you are racist. Those are two very different things.
  6. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) Seriously, have you been reading for the past year? Yup, and I have seen no such posts. I have seen a LOT of posts talking about the fact that some people were going to vote for Obama because he's black, and some others would vote for McCain because he's not. But I have seen no one make the absurd statement in here that a vote for McCain is automatically racist.
  7. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) The dozens and dozens of posts that have inferred this since Obama announced he was running. I haven't seen one single post inferring that any vote for McCain is because that voter is racist. Not one. Show me.
  8. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) I dont think they could have used anyone else, Sylar is Spocks younger Twin, there is no way around that Well known? He's an actor in a show only some people watch, and as far as I know, didn't do much worth noting before that. I hadn't even heard of him.
  9. There's a thread on this already in the Sports Pub forum. Including a quote from Stern that makes it obvious that Cuban has zero chance of owning the Cubs.
  10. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) You are talking like the everyday worker is not part of the problem. These Fu**tards that run the unions knew full well what they were doing, as did the fu**tards that head the big three. This needs to sting on both ends. If the unions won't budge, bankruptcy will come calling and quick. And the pain from that will be far greater than giving now. Remember the Steel cos. How did they do? Why wouldn't you give in on healthcare premiums, co-pays etc. This is one area where huge savings could be made in short order. I actually blame the executives at the Big 3, and just behind them the union bosses, more than the union membership as a whole. The union is there to push for stuff, that's their role. The role of the executives is to push back. The system is sometimes adversarial, but usually should result in compromise. The problem is, the Big 3 execs are scared to death of actually calling a bluff. So, the unions run all over them, which is how we ended up with these unwieldy contracts that are crippling the companies. But at this point, the union bosses should see the writing on the wall - their actions resulted in the scales being tipped too far in their favor, and the business is in danger of going under. Now is the time they should be offerring compromise. But they aren't. Meanwhile, the everyday workers are getting screwed, when all they want is to work and get paid as well as they can, just like everyone else on earth.
  11. This is a story that has been developing over months or years, but we haven't discussed in here that I recall. Pirates from Somalia have been taking bigger and bigger vessels in the Gulf of Aden region, and been going further and further out to sea. In the latest attack, they took a Saudi oil tanker with $100M worth of crude and a crew of 25 aboard. As for the current scale of these things: Interestingly, while Russian and other vessels have been getting into tangles with the pirates, the US seems content to leave them be. Or, perhaps, they are waiting them out. So here is the question... should the US ships, already in the region, act? If so, in what way and in what scale? Is it better to wait them out, against the risk of the ship and crews being destroyed or killed? Just curious of people's thoughts on this topic.
  12. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) Whoa. I am not necessarily a fan of Gitmo, but I really wish he waited until he was President and presumably receives "the rest of the story". I am thinking, guessing, hoping, that there is more information that Obama does not have that may come into this decision. So basically, I wish he would slow the f*** down and stfu until he has a couple days in office. All he has said is that he will close the facility, and get all the current prisoners some sort of justice. I don't think he needs any more story for that to be valid. But, as to HOW he does it, how the new system works, etc., then THAT clearly needs to wait for him to have the full story.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) You will never get good regulation under the system we have set up. It is too fragmented, disjointed, and contradictory. You forgot what might be the most important adjective - competitive.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 04:05 PM) Hmmm. So that’s the plan now? I mean, after giving them trials and lawyers that are usually afforded solely to American citizens. Do we call them reformed and just release them back on the streets? I hope Obama thinks of the consequences of his “morality” I think you are misunderstanding what he wants to do. He wants to give them trials, and imprison, execute or release them. A new system needs to be set up to do this. He is simply trying to get them out of their current legal black hole. How exactly he does that is still a question of course.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Huh? He didn't mean, literally, closing Guantanamo Bay. He meant closing the special prison.
  16. There are a half dozen SP's that I'd put above Ely who didn't even make this list, and at least 2 SS's I'd put above Escobar who also didn't make the list. I'd say those two are way overrated on this index.
  17. CNN article, which includes Mr. Stern clarifiying the chances of Cuban buying the Cubs: Not gonna happen.
  18. QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) So what's your point? She drove the car with everyone in the carpool lane to her "I may be smart but most of the time I act and speak like a total moron and sound like one, too" party and you are angry at folks for finding some humor in that? If she was to be tore down you wanted it to be because of things related to the issues, which is what happened so who cares what the Bevis and Butthead (no offense lostfan) crowd thinks. At the very least I think it would be a good idea to stop backhandedly insulting posters here who had a strong feeling against her. JMO. Let's take a deep breath. This is, after all, the GOP thread. And all Kap is saying, as far as I can tell, is that he'd rather see her taken down on the issues. I happen to agree with you that she elected to play the country bumpkin aw shucks act up beyond reality, because she thought it would work. It didn't, and I'm glad. But some people will honestly not care about that one way or the other, and only care about her issue stands. Nothing wrong with that.
  19. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) Trek trailer booted: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=50591 Looks pretty dang cool! Critic, no. I'm not a big Trek fan, though I have seen most of the movies. This is definitely a serious reboot. The characters, uniforms, ships, etc. are familiar. But the cast, the look and feel, the sound... all very new. I do love the intro to McCoy (Karl Urban I think) quote: "Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence" Oh, and, Simon Pegg as Scotty is pure genius. And the Spock dude looks pretty amazing. great casting. I think I may have to see this.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 15, 2008 -> 05:35 PM) Or, maybe just maybe Obama doesn't fail, gets re-elected, finishes his 2nd term relatively popular the way Bill did, and she has a major advantage going into 2016. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) Smart move, even though I think Richardson or Lugar or Kerry might be better qualified. Not only does it embrace his team of rivals concept, it also helps neutralize any attempt on her part later to set up a 2012 run against him. Hard to do that when you work for him. But if she waits for 2016, he could be in a position to help her out. Must be an echo in here.
  21. So, here's an interesting personal view I've had of the real estate market. Each month, I get a report sent to me, showing the sales of homes in my zip code. Take a look at the chart I got showing everything through October: It shows units sold in the zip code each month. The greenish line is 2007, the yellow line is 2008. Look specifically at the most recent month (October) in 2008. Yikes.
  22. So here's a little addition to the discussion. News article from Denver. This billboard says "Don't Believe in God? You're Not Alone." I personally see no issue with them putting up billboards like this with their own money. I don't really understand it being offensive. And here is a bizarre, random walk utterance from a pastor in Denver, asked about the billboards: My head hurts.
  23. Reach the Beach was my fave Fixx song (from the album of the same name). I owned Fixx cassettes and, I think, a record, at one time.
  24. Saw QoS. Pretty disappointing. Had a few good action sequences - and really only a few were good. But other than that it was really devoid of anything interesting. Not nearly the movie that Casino Royale was. I'd put QoS firmly in the bottom half of Bond movies.
