  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 04:54 PM) I consider being patriotic being one of the qualities that make people American. So if you are not patriotic at all, IMO, how can you be American? I always thought an American was a citizen of the United States of America.
  2. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) If someone is offended by the line "one nation, under God", then no, you're not American. If you are offended by the Pledge of Allegiance, then you shouldn't be in this Country. If you refuse to show your country respect and stand up and place your hand over your heart for the National Anthem, then no, you're not American. If you burn the flag, one of the most sacred symbols of our freedom, then no, you're not American. If you refuse to show respect to the servicemen and veterans of this country, the people who made this country what it is (this doesn't just include current servicemen and veterans, but also the dead who sacrificed their lives for this wonderful country in past wars), then no, you're not American. If you get offended by the ten commandments in a public place, then you're an idiot. If you say "Winter Festival" instead of Christmas, then you are not only an idiot but also a douche. If you don't respect your elders and raise your children not to do so as well, you are an asshole. ____________ Now, GoSox said he doesn't do many of the things on that list. 4 of the 10 things (40% of the list for the math challenged) I feel every American should do and if you don't, I don't consider you an American. The other 3 things are just basic things every decent person should do. The final 3 I guess you can qualify as redneck stuff. I think you are confusing "American" with, perhaps, "Patriotic".
  3. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) Nice spin job there... Did you ever see me say that? But when roughly around 90% of the country is either some form of christianity, jewish, or non religious, seeing the ten commandments somewhere in public isn't something that should be made a big deal about. And that's fine, I can understand that argument. I'm still curious as to my other questions to you, though.
  4. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) There was only one there that involved religion and it being in a public place, and that was the ten commandments one. And the ten commandments aren't just for Catholics. It is believe by all Christian religions and Judaism. So, you think that this is a nation that should only protect the religious freedoms of Christians and Jews?
  5. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) Then no, to me, you're not an American. This sentence makes me sad and befuddled for more reasons than I can list, but, I'll try this one... Has it occurred to you that America is great because of its freedoms? I'd imagine it has. So, how is it you call someone who elects not to be or do those things, not American? Or do you feel that the freedoms granted in the Constitution only apply to people just like you?
  6. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) Dye needs a day off after the beating he got yesterday. Griffey was playing RF in cincy all year long so im not too worried with him out there for one day. I still don't think that I'm the best option though. I think you missed my bad joke.
  7. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:15 PM) He has done a great job of killing the ball whenever he gets a hittable pitch middle or away. He also seems to realize he can't turn on the inside pitch anymore unless he guesses right pre pitch and can load up and turn and burn, so for the most part he seems content to just try and foul that pitch off. He's still having all kinds of problems laying off the high fastball he can't catch, but is getting better laying off the soft breaking stuff down and out of the zone. I think this is more accurate than saying Thome can't hit the inside pitch. He does hit it, and hard, sometimes. Those are the pitches he pulls, particularly low and inside. but that high, inside heat does still give him fits.
  8. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) So I'm assuming here: OC, SS AJ, C CQ, LF JT, DH PK, 1B KG, RF NS, CF AR, 2B JU, 3B I really don't have the speed to play CF anymore.
  9. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) Yeah you don't see their legs in that picture?? Heh. I admit it - I didn't see the legs at first.
  10. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) It was a promotional thing for the Walking With Dinosaurs exhibit that is going all over the country. It's something of an animatronic thing that walks around. According to the Trib site, where I got the pic, there is actually a person inside that thing.
  11. QUOTE (Soxy @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 10:15 AM) I have heard those work better in more rural areas than urban areas, is that true? True. When we had a couple of these, if we were road tripping through Wisconsin or something, it worked OK (still not nearly as good as plugging in). Get into a city, and it was near worthless. Then again, I'm kind of a snob on sound quality. When I ripped all my CD's into iTunes, instead of taking the default settings, I maxed out the sample rate and quality. Bigger files, take up more room, but it sounds noticeably better.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 10:13 AM) My brother informed me that he read in Cranes that the tribune will be placing entertainment/sports on the front page now ala USA Today. See, I think the newspapers actually get to stories that aren't press releases or commercials from campaigns faster. Let's just say I have some inside information here. The current plan is not tabloid format, nor is Entertainment/Sports going to be front page PER SE. Hard to explain, and I shouldn't really anyway.
  13. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) Don Zimmer explains that when he was brought up, baseballs were iron and papyrus. I like this one.
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Have at it... White Sox sign Julio Franco to a one year deal.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Have at it... Ken Griffey Jr. forgets to apply make up before gametime.
  16. They are all terrible. Interference galore. I've tried a few. Ultimately, its better to buy a new car stereo that has an AUX input. Then, you can plug your iPod directly into it. If you want to charge it too, you can buy chargers for iPods that have an AUX out, so you can have the best of both worlds.
  17. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) Very doubtful. They'd have to put him on the 40-man. I don't see that happening. Too many roster issues to deal with. For example: if they want to keep David Cook, he will have to go on the 40-man since he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year. Etc... I'd like to see Cook added to the 40-man and get a September call up. I think he may be a legit prospect, and at the very least, he can up his trade value a bit.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) You might have missed my post, but... No, I saw it. I just prefer Alicia I guess.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) did you hear they are changing the format of the Chicago Tribune to be more tabloid-y? Hurray! Actually, they opted away from the tabloid format recently. They will stick with the newspaper style, though it will shrink a little. And I agree with GP that there is a vast difference between talking heads/TV news people and legitimate print journalists. I've even said in here before, major papers are still the best source for news that is at least close to accurate and material. They are just, also, a bit slower on the take than the boob tube folks.
  20. The best PETA pictures ever were the Alicia Silverstone ones. And the TV ad she made with them. I don't have a link, but, those were very nice.
  21. I wouldn't say that Egbert "continues to struggle", since he'd been pitching quite well over the previous 8 or 9 games. He just had a bad outing. David Cook, since returning from his brief DL stint, is starting to look like himself again (had been slumping before going down). He's 4-for-9 since returning plus 4 walks. His line today was classic Cook: 1-for-1 plus 3 walks.

    Memphis

Oh crap, forgot to add... Even if you don't stay at the Peabody, make sure to stop in the lobby bar and have a drink. The feel is great. Have a mint julip or something similarly southern. And try to catch the Ducks show. Its hilarious.

    Memphis

OK. As a former Memphis resident, here is a 5 minute brain dump of cool stuff to see and do in Memphis... PLACES TO EAT Memphis is famous for BBQ (and The Blues), specifically pork BBQ. There are two basic varieties - dry rub and wet rub. Try both. I'm a dry rub guy, and the classic and best (in my time there) place to go for dry rub is Rendezvous. Its right in downtown, not too far from Beale Street. The entrance is off a dingy little alley, and the waits will be long. But the food is awesome. For the wet rub, try Corky's, which has a few locations in Memphis and the surrounding area. Other non-BBQ eats... Do the Blues Brunch at the Elvis. Have a burger at Huey's. And the best overall restaurant in town is McEwen's on Monroe. All these restaurants are in the downtown area. Outside downtown, Bosco's in Midtown is good eats and a micro-brew with its own, very good beers. PLACES TO DRINK Beale Street. Just go anywhere, but try for the places less crowded with tourists. Make sure to go to at least one Blues club. BB King's is the classic, but there are a number of others, on and just off of Beale. This could be under THINGS TO DO also. Its a must do, really. My fave bar is the Flying Saucer, just off Beale. A selection of about 120 different beers - you could stay there all night. Plus its got seating looking out of open air windows at Beale, so you can people watch while you imbibe. PLACES TO STAY The classic hotel in Memphis is the Peabody - the gateway to the Delta. Rooms are pricey by Memphis standards, and not big. But its got all the right FEEL. Another two recommended places to stay in the downtown area - Madison Hotel and the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse. Talbot is great for groups, because the rooms are big, have couches, and kitchens. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Graceland, of course. Pricey and a pain, but a necessary evil in Memphis. Fun tour, smaller house than you'd expect. Beale Street. Again. Walk the whole thing, dive into some dives, check the couple museums out, listen to some blues. This is Memphis. Civil Rights Museum. You want to know about some important stuff in how America was? Go here. Its an amazing experience. The museum IS the hotel where MLK was shot, and part of the tour shows the room and balcony IN STATE, as if it just happened. Really cool. Mud Island... take the tram from downtown to the island. Concert venue, museums, parks, nice place to wander around. Take the trolleys, to get around downtown. Don't bother driving in the downtown area. Autozone Park - where the Redbirds (AAA St. Louis) play. Nice little minor league park. ADVICE Don't go wandering around at night too far from the downtown area. Neighborhoods get sketchy fast.
