  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) as opposed too.....? That was supposed to be green, yes? McCain's campaign thus far has been about Obama, Obama and Obama.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 01:10 AM) Well, I think the thing that has disillusioned many people of my generation is that two great men (McCain, Kerry) have been completely undermined by political strategists with outright lies, not misleading facts, but outright lies that dig into the worst prejudices of the country. I sort of agree - they've both done great things in their time. But I am not sure I'd call Kerry a great man. Not completely UNSURE either, but, I'm on the fence. Funny, because I voted for Kerry, but likely won't be voting for McCain.
  3. QUOTE (Oaia @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 08:43 PM) Its time to vote for the candidate with the most impressive credential in American history. A picture of the candidate taken today: Welcome to the board, sir. And that is a nice side benefit - first White Sox fan in the White House. BUT - IMPORANT - in order to post in the Buster in the future, you need to read, agree to, and post acknowledgement in the MUST READ thread at the top of the forum. Thanks.
  4. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) McCain will win by a landslide You may be the only person I've heard say this. What's your theory as to why?
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:31 PM) In terms of energy prices being high now, if there were some alternative that would make money, it would CERTAINLY already be done. So, by logic, it tells me that the price point of energy being high is only now justification for alternative energy investment tells me the price point on that very same alternative energy is just as high, if not higher. That means everything is bunk that's being spread by BOTH campaigns on this issue. Since RSO supporters are more "enviro-friendly", they're getting sold a bigger line of bullpuckey. Late on the reply here, but, I really want to make sure you get what I am saying. I think there are two big business factors you are missing here. First, developing and maturing these technologies takes time. It can be already done if the prices just recently reached a key point - if they did, then we're only going to see an increasing trickle for now, then a steady increase following. Second, if you are trying to grow a business line, then you act right at that cusp -- not wait until everyone else is doing it.
  6. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Kerry didn't lose because of a book or even the swift boat adds. it's just an excuse his supporters like to make IMO Kerry was a weak candidate who ran a lousy campaign. Swift boat was a factor too, but, he could have gotten past it if he were stronger in other areas, and had handled it differently.
  7. Odd move. I don't really like the idea of just skipping the 5-slot with days off, because as the season wears on, I think the starters could use the extra day's rest. I'd rather see Broadway stay up.
  8. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 10:10 AM) I am a firm believer that the government should NEVER be acting in it's own business interest, which is the problem. Legislatures sure as hell aren't the inventors of the marketplace. If there were high levels of money to be made off of "alternative energy", someone would already be a freaking trillionaire and the richest person in the world. You can't make money off of alternative energy (at least I'll say it this way - the technology is not there YET), otherwise there would be people cashing in hard core, DESPITE Congress, who has no power over these things. That's yet another reason why I say RSO is full of s***, but it sure does sound good coming out of his mouth, doesn't it? It makes everyone feel good about what he'll do as president. *cough*. You don't think the government should be acting in its own business interests? That makes no sense to me, unless maybe we aren't on the same wavelength here. I am not saying the government should be growing its numbers or taking things over - I'm saying they should be constantly trying to make decisions that makes the country - which is its business - stronger. That definitely includes investing in areas that will result in job and business revenue growth, which leads to more income for the gov't as well. And this argument that I see some people pedaling - that if there was money to be made in alternative energy, it would already be done - is not relfective of the reality of business. First, energy prices have only just now gotten high enough to make larger scale investment worthwhile in the private sector. Second, it takes years for this stuff to develop and mature. Third, if you were to employ that model at a real world company - oh, no one else is doing it yet, let's wait until it makes sense for some other people - you'd not have a job for long. This is exactly the kind of situation that is problematic for Congress or a President, because the positive returns won't really kick in until after their term is up. But that's why its important for us, the electorate, to push for it when we vote. If we hesitate on this, we'll end up having to buy the technology from overseas, further exacerbating our financial problems - we won't get the job growth, we will have to pay a premium, we'll have no control over it.
  9. Very nice - get to see some Beckham in the minors for a few weeks, and Miranda gets promoted.
  10. Problem with these lists is that it really depends on your idea of balance, between ceiling/future value and how close they are to contributing. That's where you get some differences, where Getz for example might be 2nd or 3rd because he's ready. Also, who falls under prospect? What about guys like Mike MacDougal or Ehren Wassermann, who are at AAA but have played major league ball? Or a guy like Brian Anderson? I assume those are not really prospects anymore, but that's a matter of opinion. I assume Broadway and Russell are still prospects, though. But trying to combine the two, here is what I come up with for quick and dirty lists... PITCHERS 1. Poreda 2. Broadway 3. Richard 4. Egbert 5. Cassel 6. Link 7. Harrell 8. Teixera 9. Shirek 10. D Carter 12. Hudson 13. Sauer 14. Upchurch 15. Asselin POSITION PLAYERS 1. Getz 2. Fields 3. Beckham 4. Allen 5. Jose Martinez 6. Shelby 7. Jordan Danks 8. Retherford 9. Miranda 10. Cook 11. Escobar 12. Jorge Castillo 13. Morel 14. Kuhn 15. Gerst 16. Kendall
  11. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) Jorge Castillo was leading the Appalachian League in hitting at the time he was promoted. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Miranda is promoted back to W-S to make room for Beckham. It would be a nice way for Miranda to redeem himself since he started the year at W-S. He's been very good at Kanny. I was thinking that about Miranda too, but, two problems there. First, where does he play in W-S? Paiml is at SS (and not playing that well), and I think Persichina is their 2B and is doing pretty well. Seems a bit crowded. Second, Miranda has been playing primarily 2B at Kanny. Escobar, who is struggling, has been the SS. So, assuming Beckham plays SS at Kanny, that probably means its Escobar going elsewhere, not Miranda.
  12. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) Which is why the McCain startegy would be to dismiss all the reasons that would benefit Obama and leave the one that would not. It wouldn't matter. An Obama-Powell ticket would be unbeatable, unless something HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE about Obama comes out. Like, he swore an oath to protect the interests of Al Qaeda type huge. Barring that, you can put the election to bed. But this isn't going to happen, so, probably a pointless discussion. Heck, he may not even endorse Obama.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 08:05 AM) Here's my thought on what is going on... Richard is getting called up to pitch in case Broadway bombs. Adam Russell is going down to the minors. They don't want to use Carrasco in the long relief role and effectively lose him as if he were starting anyway. We'll see what really happens. I was thinking they might send down the new acquisition from KC, to get some time in AAA. They may have seen a few flaws when he pitched, and want him to work on some things. Richard becomes the Boone Logan role of the staff, and if Broadway bombs, Richard can start as you said.
  14. As a follow up note, I read yesterday in the hard copy of the paper that these lawmakers already GOT a 3.8% COLA. This 12% raise would be above and beyond that.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 08:13 AM) Impressive. That's the first thing I thought of while talking with Gordon Beckham late Wednesday afternoon. Beckham, the White Sox' first-round draft pick, was officially signed Wednesday, and he'll join Class A Kannapolis Thursday. Considering he was the No. 8 overall selection in the June draft, Beckham could have commanded a signing bonus between $4-5 million. He "settled'' for $2.6 million, which tells me a lot about the 21-year-old shortstop. The other thing that stuck out with Beckman was this statement: “I think everybody is different, everybody plays the game a different way. I play it my way. I would like to lead the White Sox one day the way Derek Jeter leads the Yankees. That would be the kind of leadership role I would like to take.” Had just about any other kid tried attaching himself with the great Jeter, laughter would have ensued. With Beckham, though, you actually can picture his face being out front with the White Sox for 10-15 years. Of course, he’s still got a long ladder to climb. But the bonus baby is off to a flying start. from dailyherald.com First, how can a veteran sportswriter think that someone "slotted" in the first round would be offered that kind of money? That's why there is collusion or salary fixing now in MLB, NFL and NBA, more or less. I hope all the Jeter/Yankees bashers won't be too hard on the kid for making that ambitious comparison. People may hate Jeter and think he's overrated, but I don't think there is much denying he's the leader for NYY and a top notch hitter and shortstop. If Beckham could come anywhere CLOSE to that, I'm sure we'd all be thrilled.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 07:52 AM) And now that decades of consumer choices have driven the prices to the point that they are today, you are seeing that happen WITHOUT government intervention. Like I always say, if there is a profit motivation to do something, someone out there will be doing it. Yes, and its already happening. But I am also a firm believer in the US government acting in its own business interests as well, and I think that investing in these sectors could give a very nice future return.
  17. Best burger from a chain restaurant I've had, bar none, was Backyard Burger. They're a smaller chain, in the south, so I suppose most here haven't had one. But they are superb.
  18. I'm a lot happier with Broadway starting than Carrasco. I think DJ is a good long guy in the pen, and should stay there. Broadway is a starter, and I liked what little I saw of him last year. I'll be there today to watch him pitch.
  19. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 03:36 AM) I believe there are three important questions: 1. Have either of you begun working at your career jobs? 2. Do you plan on starting a family? 3. How long would you wait between announcing the wedding and actual marriage? If it's more than a year than you're not ready for marriage. I wouldn't advise you to do this, because it's not typical and could backfire (since I don't know you, let alone this girl), but there's always the option of actually discussing marriage before handing her a ring. My parents were dating for six years, and knew they'd get married one day but neither had their careers set. They were also set on beginning a family, so their intentions may be different from yours. Not typical? I've been engaged twice (only married once), and in both instances, there were long discussions about marriage beforehand.
  20. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) So when did liberal turn into a bad word? 1994. Started being a rally cry for the rebuilt, socially focused GOP that had its mini-revolution in '94. But actually, that's been subsiding significantly the last few years. They can thank W for that, in great part. The social conservatives don't have the kind of power they had for that 10 year stretch. Now, conservative is starting to look like a bad word in more circles.
  21. Dubler hitting .286 in his last 10 games (has hits in 8 of them). Paiml with another error - that's 5 in 3 games for him. AA and AAA giving up big double digit run totals. Cook seems to be slumping still.
  22. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 02:24 AM) My guess is that Broadway starts tomorrow, then after the game is optioned back to Charlotte and Richard pitches in that spot next time through the order. With Clayton going up, Charlotte is short a starting pitcher. So I doubt any relievers or Wise will go to Charlotte. Unless somebody is going on the DL. I hope this isn't an injury to one of our starters that we aren't yet aware of. Also possible that when they said he was called up, they really meant traded.
