2008 General Election Discussion Thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
Someone please explain who "RSO" is. I mean, contextually, I figured it was Obama. But what does that stand for? -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) Assuming it's his left forearm, then this is no big deal. I was at the game last night, it looked like at least one pitch hit him in that left forearm area.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) Stiffness in the forearm is what is being reported. Well, he did get hit twice by pitches last night. Probably no big deal. I hope.

Two Thirds of US Companies Paid NO Federal Income Taxes
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) Actually I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not here but I agree, I think. The fair tax sounds like a really good idea on paper, but in practice it amounts to raising taxes on most people, and the more money you make, the less of your income gets taxed since rich people don't spend 100% of their income. Hell, I'm not even close to rich, and *I* don't spend 100% of my income. I think some of the core ideas of the "Fair Tax" actually make a lot of sense, but, its got some huge flaws too. -
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) So we want to encourage only the wealthy to run for office? At $190,000 a year, that's a very good salary. The reason the wealthy run for office isn't because of the salary or lack thereof. Its the campaign finance system, the financial demands, and power/influence relationships built around the wealthy.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) But Wasserman can throw the ball 90mph once in a while. That and his funky motion is just enough to trick some hitters. What is Childers' velocity like?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 10:08 PM) I went to Medora, ND on Saturday and came back Sunday afternoon. First off, it's a neat little tourist attraction considering the second best tourist attraction in North Dakota is a giant f***ing cow. Secondly, it's North Dakota's best 1 day trip in the state because there's only enough stuff to do for 1 day and then you get bored out of your mind. There are 3 old fashioned general stores, like 7 ice cream shops, 3-4 real restaurants in town, and everything in the town is overpriced like no other. I did get to ride through Teddy Roosevelt National Park (while slightly intoxicated) and that was OK, especially the part where 10 buffaloes were standing right in the middle of the road we were driving on. I yelled at them pretty good but they seemed generally uninterested in some drunk dude's rantings. Please tell me you weren't driving.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 11:14 AM) That article really draws some half-assed conclusions. What exactly is the author trying to say, because he never said it. That is basically an interesting, two sentence factoid, that was fluffed into a feature length article.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 11:01 AM) Overall, I believe this is a better system than what we currently have, but should Congress be tied into State benchmarks? I agree that state reps, governor, etc should be tied to state benchmarks, but I think COngress should have national benchmarks. When I said Congress, I meant state Congress, since we were discussing the state level raises here. And I meant to say it also applies to the Gov. I guess I should have said "State Assembly and Executive" to be more clear.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) Ehren Wasserman? Yes, ironically, one of my favorite players fits the mold... sort of. Ehren had a very good 2007 at the major league level though. Then he forgot how to throw his curveball this year, oddly, only while with the Sox. And he did look better, though not good enough, his second trip up.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) gotta factor in inflation. So if inflation rises at 3% per year (which is a bs amount anyway as it historically does not include housing or fuel increases), then the lawmakers get a 1% raisie, so they lose 2% each year. sounds fair. This is called goal alignment. Its basic business. If the lawmakers are getting the same increase in real wages that their constituents are, that does two great things. One, it motivates them further to create job growth and development, instead of smokescreen B.S. actions. Two, it creates more trust between lawmakers and their constituents, because they are in the same economic boat, on a RELATIVE basis. I think its very fair. If wages in the state aren't keeping up with inflation, why should Congress get raises and no one else does?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 08:30 AM) There are plenty of examples of guys who mastered AAA but had no chance at the ML level. Look no further than one of the nicest guys of all time in Jeff Bajenaru. I agree, I've seen those as well. But again, we aren't talking about a guy with decent numbers at AAA. This guy is nails down there. I can't recall a pitcher that was THAT good at AAA who went on to absolutely suck at the major league level. I'm sure there are a few... they just don't come to mind.

I could make a long list of my incorrect assumptions going into the season... --I never though Floyd and Danks would be this good. I was going to be happy with them being back end starters, as long as they put in some innings and kept their ERA's under 5.50. --I thought Javy would build on 2007 and have a huge year. --I thought Ehren Wassermann was going to be effective again. --I thought Konerko would start slow and start mashing in June as usual. --I thought Dye would have a down year. --And overall, I thought CLE and DET would be contending for the title, with the Sox in 3rd or nipping at the heels of 2nd and contending for, at best, a wildcard. I also got a few right though, that weren't popular at the time... --I was confident that Alexei would be a solid starter. Not this solid, but, good. --I didn't think Floyd would collapse as some did. --I was confident that TCQ would have a big year. All told, I was wrong more than I was right.

I still can't find any word on who we traded away.

Winston-Salem made 5 errors in that game (2 by Paiml). Also interesting, Retherford was leading off. Someone has to explain to me why Jason Childers can put up not just good, but downright dominant numbers at Charlotte, but he'd be awful in the majors. If anyone has any sort of scouting type info on the guy, I'd like to hear it. The guy is striking out a batter an inning, has only 13 walks in 53 IP, AvgA is .166, and he induces a lot of groundballs (2.18 GO/AO). He's old (33), but really, who cares if he could help the bullpen out?

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:46 PM) My bad, I got my posts for you and Texsox mixed up. All us Admins look alike on the internets.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) Congratulations, youve circled the debate back to my original point I never disagreed with your original point. If you look at my highlight points post, I think I made it clear. Maybe not though.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) Your point is on such a different level of what anyone is saying though. Assume youre not fighting the actual speed you were traveling but who was driving the car. If you get stopped by a cop, you wont have to go to court because they accused you of speeding when you werent even in your car, that is the difference. Sure, if you want to fight the speed youre traveling the appeal process would be the same, but not if you werent driving the car. The process is the same. The mistakes might be different. If the system itself is flawed because it generates more erroneous tickets than cops do, then change the camera system.

I have an idea here. I suggest a law that gives lawmakers an automatic pay raise that exactly matches the increase in pay, on average, for the average middle income Illinoisan. In other words, if the average annual wage increase in Illinois is 1%, then lawmakers get 1%. Not that complicated, doesn't have to be revisited, and puts them on par with their constituents.
-
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) No its not. If someone else is driving your car the ticket will be in their name if they are pulled over so you, the owner of the car, will have nothing to do with it. The new way, they send the ticket to the owner of the car, so even if you werent in it, youre responsible for it. I think you are missing my point. The appeal PROCESS should be the same. The cameras will result in mistakes, and so do cops. Just different ones.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) Vote republican next time Problem is, last time, the Republican alternative was Judy Baar Topinka. And remember, death wasn't an option. I still think that race for Governor, between those two worthless candidates, was possible the worst high office race ever as far as quality level goes. Terrible choices all around. As I recall, the Green party actually managed to get nearly 10% of the vote, which should tell you something. Which by the way means that, being over 5%, they get a nice chunk of money and media time in the next cycle automatically.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) We stayed at a hostel about 10 mins south east of the city center. So we needed Cabs to get into the city, otherwise we would have been walking for hours. We did use the Trolley a few time though. 10 minutes southeast of downtown? And you are still alive? I'm impressed.
-
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Ok, and I was simply saying the same appeals process for these two different methods of giving out tickets is bulls*** and not easy. I can't find the post at the moment but someone mentioned that these don't count as moving violations. What sense does that make? If a cop catches you running through a yellow/near red light, he/she is going to write you up and its a moving violation. One driver's ed teacher told me going through a light like that should be considered racing because by definition you are driving up against a timed event. Not counting as a moving violation screams "cash cow" to me as people will be more inclined just to pay the fine instead of fighting it. I recall reading a story where hundreds of people were assigned tickets because the cameras incorrectly read their plates while they were turning right on red but with a green arrow. If they aren't moving violations, that's B.S., and its a way to get around a more robust appeal system.
