A little more detail - the affair did happen while his wife had cancer. Still denies being the father, and a former Edwards staffer has claimed he is the daddy.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 02:58 PM) I know that, but his mental approach was supposed to be what made him good previously. All I'm saying is one of them is wrong. You can't have stuff, makeup, and suck. Well, you forgot one wildcard - injury. Or a slight variation: mechanical or consistency issues.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) Unless there's less accidents because the flow of traffic is more uniform, which is exactly what happens. Speed differentials cause problems, not speed. Again, look at the autobahn. People don't drive with their foot to the floor. They drive at a "comfortable" speed, which, for most people, tends to be in the 70's or 80's. The traffic flows smoothly, everyone passes on the left, and there aren't huge issues. I think that argument is hollow. The face fact, that speed differentials cause problems, is certainly true. But to use that as an excuse to raise the speed limit makes no sense - people's "comfort" is based on habit. If people obeyed the speed limits for a while, they'd get comfortable with it. And in Germany, the reason for fewer fatalities isn't because of the speed. I've spent time in Germany. Two things I noted... one, drivers there are focused on driving - they take it seriously. That means they are paying close attention to what they are doing (not their phones, drinks, crackberries, whatever), but it also means you have less jackasses taking chances because they know how serious their machines are. Two, the penalties for breaking driving laws in Germany (serious ones, like DUI, reckless, etc.) are MUCH more severe than they are here.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:49 PM) Do you think it could be that KW still likes his pitchers to be in the 90 mph range mode with good mechanics and control, whereas some of the newer assistants want the "sexier" prospect? Maybe, I don't know. But in that particular case, I think the argument (tools vs results/reliability) probably goes on in every club. It goes on here too.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) I'm going off of what one of KW's assistants was saying in the press box a few weeks back. Is he really 3-10 with a 4.89 ERA? I guess I don't follow win-loss records too much. I've gotten the impression the last year or two that there may be a pretty big split between KW and some of his close assistants, and some others in his employ.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) But, that's being superimposed on a nationwide trend of fewer automobile fatalities stretching back decades as safety standards on automobiles have tightened up and other laws (DUI's, seatbelts) have been more stringently enforced. Yeah, those numbers scream polluting factors to me. Its pretty clear that if cars are going faster, if all else is equal, there will be more fatalities and injuries. Its just physics.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) To me that is immaterial. To have an affair after going on the campaign trail talking about how the cancer changed his life and all of these things he wanted other people to sacrifice because of his eye-openings, is just inexcusable to me. I don't think much of someone who would have an affair in the first place, let alone one who made his wife's health one of the central reasons for what he was campaigning for. I have to agree. This destroys his entire public image, and deservedly so. The fact that his son was tragically killed is certainly not an excuse either. Maybe even makes it worse. I would expect that losing a son, having your wife diagnosed with cancer, and the stress of the campaign trail can all have big negative effects on a person. That person may sometimes say or do things out of character. But having an affair is inexcusable in these circumstances. Its probably inexcusable anyway, but these things make it worse.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) LINK Holy crap. Bad enough it happened at all. Worse if he did it while his wife was battling cancer. Worst of all if it also resulted in a child. What an asshole.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) We must have worked some magic on Carter because whoever his coach at G-F is, Carter actually has some command. I don't know much about Carter to be honest, but I remember hearing he has very good raw stuff but lacked command and that's why his numbers weren't so hot at Old Dominion. And from looking at his college numbers, that seems to be the case, as he had very good strike out numbers but his walk totals were way too high. He and his college teammate Hudson are owning for G-F! Curt Hasler is the pitching coach at GF, Chris Cron is the manager. Hasler was a pitcher drafted by the Sox, made his way up through the system in the late 80's with pretty good looking numbers... then pitched just 11 games in '91 at AAA and that was it. Maybe he was injured or something.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) Stuff does not make a good pitcher. There is a lot more to it. Everyone has good talent if they make to the high minors. It's the mental approach and mental toughness which can get guys with good stuff pushed out of baseball. i.e. Mike MacDougal

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) Refresh me, if you will. I don't have a link or anything, but my basic recollection is... Bobby needed someone to warm him up pre-inning in a game, and the catchers were both busy for some reason. Pablo, being Pablo, says "I'll do it!", and goes out there to warm up Jenks. Bobby makes his first practice pitch which whizzes by Pablo's head at 95 mph and sails all the way to the backstop, with Pablo never getting a glove on it. Pablo stands up, looks sheepish, and walks back to the dugout.

Man held in Fla. for threatening Obama's life

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) I don't want to take this guys side - so lets get that out there first - but to your points: I don't see how Paragraph 6 is a direct threat. He denied making the threats, then said (probably in a joking manner, which as you say is the dumbest thing you can do, but still), that if he wanted to kill him he'd use a sniper rifle....that's a stretch to mean "i want to go kill obama." I've heard comedians saythings 20 times worse towards Bush and you don't see the USSS rush in and arrest them (and remember they questioned him and then searched his car/room on the basis of those comments, nothing else). Moreover I like the fact that Paragraph 17 claims he was threatening to kidnap, even though he never said that (if he did, i must have glanced over that, but I didn't find it anywhere in that affidavit). I guess I just feel this is totally weak. It's linking together some racist guys comments and his weapons and assuming he's going to do something about it. Again, i'm not saying he shouldn't have been questioned or that he shouldn't have been followed/watched, but i think detaining him is an entirely different thing. Eh, I could see it going either way. You can't joke around about that anyway, and sure as hell not to a USSS agent. I think the facts that he is mentally unstable and very well armed may have contributed to the decision to arrest him. And I agree the report has some issues, as I pointed one out myself. Sometimes cops, even ones in a high level agency like the USSS, are really poor writers. Not really considered a core competency for the job, though perhaps it should be. -
The squirrel story and the Bobby Jenks warm-up story are two of my favorite funny baseball stories in recent years, and both are from Pablo. Gotta love him.

Man held in Fla. for threatening Obama's life

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Actually, not really. Here's a copy of the affidavit: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years...7081obama1.html Basically there's not much more than what was in the news article (in terms of threats) and you learn some other things that were not in the article: that some of the weapons and ammunition that were found in the car were in a safe and that all of the weapons were legally in his possession and legal to own (including the armor piercing rounds). So, basically this is an incredibly scary situation, IMO. Not that he shouldn't have been questioned, or watched closely, but the fact that they deem a couple of cracks to classmates and some legally owned weapons probably cause to charge and detain him... I thought the Alien and Sedition Acts went away a long time ago... Actually, check point 6 in the Affidavit, and its exactly what I was referring to. He made a threatening comment towards Obama, directly to a USSS agent (which has to be on the top 10 list of stupid things one can do to get themselves arrested). The in point 12, you have a witness statement about Giesel making a specific and life-threatening comment towards Obama. This versus the only Bush mention is in point 13, is not a direct quote, and was not said directly to a federal agent. Plus the President reference is not clearly attached to Bush there (which is just poor writing by the agent who filed the report). This is all why point 17 suggests prosecution of the threat against Obama - its a much stronger case. The Bush comment was just "hate", and then a general comment about killing a President. By the way, something else worth pointing out that few people know... The USSS has special legal privileges for search, seizure and detention that no other agency of government at any level has. If it pertains to a case of a threat against the executive, they can do all those things without a warrant or permission. They do not require a warrant, or felony-in-commission, or wingspan, or any of the other various warrant exceptions. They can, if they elect to, just do it. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) Especially when you factor in that even talking about killing the President is a federal offense. Which is why I think we are missing some key parts of the story here. The Secret Service did the investigating, not the MSM, and I don't think the USSS has any great preference for Obama over Bush. Possibly even the opposite. So if this guy is being charged over the Obama comment and not the Bush one, I can almost guarantee you that there are important differences in what was said about each one by the suspect. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) Is Gload your #2 favorite White Sox of all time? I see I can't win this argument, but there is no reasoning for BA to be #2 on Heads' list other than he's a goofy bastard and picked him to be different. The point I was making is, there IS no argument. You cannot argue about someone's favorite anything. Trying to do so is just arguing to argue. I'm an Ehren Wassermann fan. I think he's a good guy, I like what he brings to the table in terms of ability, and I think he'll eventually settle into being a decent middle reliever. I also love his back story - hard not to like a guy who made it to the majors from an open tryout. He's the anti-prospect - not drafted out of college, never looked at as a prospect, yet succeeded at every level on his way up anyway. Now, Ehren is no great stuff statistically this year, and is struggling. So am I an idiot because I like the guy? Its all subjective. You making declarative statements that some player has no place on a "favorites" list is missing the point of the list and the thread.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 10:27 AM) Whisler isn't a soft tosser. Yes, he does have a slight hitch. Not a soft tosser? I had thought he was. What is his velocity like?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) But that's just it, there's no reasoning behind it. For BA to be #2 on any list of favorite players (and I know favorite), just show's lack of judgement. With no back story, which there is none, BA could not have proven in his very sporadic playing time enough to be #2 on anyone's list. It just shows a complete lack of fandom. Lack of fandom? What a joke. If you want to discuss who is better or best, use stats, all that, great. But saying someone is less of a "fan" because they like a player who isn't a Hall of Famer is just pigheaded. Do you tell people they are less of a sports fan because they follow Team X? Do you tell people they are less of a man because of what beer they prefer to drink? Hell, I was a big Ross Gload fan when he was with the team, so what? You have completely missed the point of these threads.
