  1. QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) AFTER FIRST DAY OF ADDITIONAL VOTING: Longoria and Hart leading - per mlb.com "Longoria is followed in a tightly packed American League group by outfielder Jermaine Dye of the White Sox, first baseman Jason Giambi of the Yankees, second baseman Brian Roberts of the Orioles and outfielder Jose Guillen of the Royals." http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...8&fext=.jsp Need more Dye! Get out there and vote, SoxTalk!
  2. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) i hope not. His swing seems to be kind of touchy, the last thing I want to see is CQ mess up his swing trying to go nuts in the HR Derby ala Bobby Abreu I'd actually worry less about him than other players (Crede, for example), because I think CQ is better than most on the team at adjusting from time to time. Even pitch to pitch. He adjusts his swing, stance, etc., pretty well. Sometimes he even fiddles with it too much (a la Konerko). But I think he's very capable of adjusting back to reality after the derby.
  3. I know this thread came with caveats, but I just can't see being able to feel even slightly confident in a post-season rotation yet. Way too much baseball left to play, not to mention the dynamics of who we play when.
  4. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) Wrong. I don't like Obama because he's brainwashed half of America with his "charm" and "good looks" and his "great speaking abilities". If he were a Democrat, Republican, dips***, whatever, and he would do what I believe to be right, I'd vote for him. So all of us supporting Obama in the fall are brainwashed. Got it. This line of thinking - that Obama has so much less substance than anyone else, that he's all flash - has been peddled throughout the campaign season. And its a joke. During the primaries, people were saying that Obama was nothing but speeches, and never made any tough stances or policy statements. This was patently false. He had all sorts of policy out there, on his website, as well as in POLICY speeches. This is exactly the same as the other candidates. But because Obama is ALSO a much better speaker and more charismatic than other candidates, he was ripped for that, to make him seem hollow. Except its just not the case. Now the GOP is using the same tactic. Similarly, the Dems are trying to portray McCain as being nothing but Bush Part Deux. There are two key points in looking at this... One, neither of those charges is true. Yes, Obama has far less political experience than McCain. Yes, its true that McCain is with Bush on the war and some other key issues. But in reality, both those charges are blatant overstatement and oversimplification of the facts. You want to say that Obama doesn't have the resume for the job? Fine, that's a really good argument. You want to say that McCain's pledges to continue (basically) the Bush policies on the war and the economy? Also a good argument. But to say Obama is nothing but a speech-maker, or that McCain is just another Bush, is absurd and outside of reality.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 11:38 PM) I hate linebrink in that role. I would like a committee based on situations. If not, use Dotel, he has the most closing experience. I like Thornton taking over as temporary closer. Not only are his numbers this year just sick, but he's really the calm, cool and collected type. Plus that velocity is just fantastic - harder than Jenks throws nowadays, really. But its temporary, so, no big deal one way or another. Your platoon idea would work well too.
  6. QUOTE (Maverick0984 @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) 1) Who was the biggest snub among AL hitters? 85.0% Jermaine Dye, White Sox 7.0% Aubrey Huff, Orioles 5.2% Nick Markakis, Orioles 1.9% Johnny Damon, Yankees 0.9% Hideki Matsui, Yankees Where is that from?
  7. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) So why has Jack been having so many awful games this year? Not recovering well from injury or is AAA just to hard? I expected much more from Egbert this season. He's been getting a lot better. His last 7 starts, in 41 innings, he has a 3.29 ERA, with 41 K's versus 9 walks. Those are some strong numbers.
  8. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) we should just never let haeger pitch if its below 70 degrees out I thought that with knucklers, it wasn't a function of temperature, as much as humidity. And wind.
  9. Any confirmation on this beyond a blog snippet? I know its the newspaper's blog, but still, it doesn't sound official to me.
  10. Classless thing to do, IMO. Maybe even a bit insulting. Hopefully she isn't invited back for that sort of thing, anywhere, again.
  11. Charlotte beating Rochester 3-1 in the 3rd. Richar with a 3 run bomb. Haeger pitching. Konerko DH'ing. B-Ham beating Huntsville 3-1 in the 3rd. Poreda pitching, looks good so far. W-S was postponed by rain. Kanny is off. Elizabethton @ Bristol, just about to start. Martinez goes for Bristol. Great Falls beating Missoula, 1-0, in the 4th. Hudson pitching for the Voyagers.
  12. Miranda playing 3B yesterday? That's interesting.
  13. Saw Hancock. Given the lousy reviews, I was pleasantly surprised. Funny, fast-paced, fun characters, good dialogue. Mostly predictable, except for one nice big twist, but that's what I'd expect. Good fun movie. Recommend it.
  14. QUOTE (WISOX @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) A good analogy of how the U.S. has become is being in a moderated forum which controls and censors everything you attempt to post. And, I am NOT alluding to this place, rather I am merely using that as an example. Your analogy aside, let's be clear here on a few things... One, this is a privately-owned site, and so the owner can make whatever rules he damn well pleases. In this case, that includes removing certain content that is found offensive. That IS freedom - the freedom for SoxTalk to exist and do what it wants. Two, like it or not, this is NOT a public place where you can say anything you please. If we find it offensive, we will take it down. Your "gay fairyoti" line, for example, is close to that line. Please tone that down a bit. (see how I didn't edit your post? Just requested that you follow the rules of our PRIVATE site?) Three, if you think this site censors stuff, try some other Sox sites. We are more open than most. Shop around and see. Every site has its positives and negatives - if you want more "freedom", this is probably your best bet, IMHO.
  15. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) Short covering. OK. But if that logic follows, then where was the initial dip from the wave of short entries? I don't recall seeing that.
  16. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) LOL. "So I went to Australia last month and had a Chicago style hot dog for the first time......" That is one angry cookie you've got there.
  17. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Was McCain piloting the helicopter that freed the hostages? He is/was in Colombia. I bet he was taking sniper fire.
  18. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 10:46 AM) I believe the speculation that has driven up oil in the last month has been from trapped shorts. That would seem odd. If they are trapped in shorts, they would probably be liquidating as fast as they could, and that would glut the market (thus lowering prices). Unless, you are saying that they are all sticking it out, waiting for a correction before expiry. ETA: Or, do you mean they are offsetting into long positions as a makeup? And flooding the market with buys that way? As in, a failed wave of shorts?
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 08:23 AM) Exactly! I just have a really hard time with the choices we have - if this is the best we have in America, it makes me really sad. Its all relative. These two are better than any pair we've had in my lifetime, IMO. Also, I think people sometimes forget how damn-near-impossible it is in the modern media age to look like a good candidate. Its incredibly difficult. At this point, the way things work (the political system, the media, the money), I think pretty much any human being who runs will end up looking pretty bad from time to time. This is one of the reasons why I think its silly to focus on verbal miscues, slight moderation of views on issues, bad hair days, bad green backdrop days, and the fact that some candidate has some random person on staff that may have gotten a nice interest rate on a mortgage. I think there are far more important things to focus on.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) There's a lot of late-80's Mustangs that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds (or better). They're making a hell of a lot more power than 400HP and getting closer to 5 MPG, though. This guy sounds like he's FOS. I'm sorry but I don't think so. Those Stangs may be in the 4's somewhere 0-60, but not 3 seconds. I know of only 2 production cars to ever break 3 seconds - that's two production cars, EVER. IN any case, I agree, I think hes full of it.
  21. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 08:33 AM) I think we should be extremely happy with our candidates if the biggest thing worth worrying about is if they received a mortgage with a relatively low interest rate. BUT TEH ALL SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry Kap, but I had too.
  22. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) I just heard Bill RIchardson on Larry King Live talking about the Columbia hostage situation. Obama..... pick this man. He'll make John McCain look like a 4th grader when it comes to foreign policy and knowledge (not that McCain hasn't already mad himself look like a 4th grader) Didn't you just say the other day that he was a loose cannon, and you'd rather see Edwards?
  23. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 07:55 AM) So far he hasn't let anyone look at the engine or the car itself, so all there is is his claims to achive that milage. We'll see if he actually enters it in that contest, because then it will get a good going over to see if it actually works. Well, I was pretty excited, until I noted a couple things. One, as you say, no one has verified these numbers. Two, so far, he isn't making himself very believable. He says is '87 Stang can go 0-60 in 3 seconds. No freakin' way that's the case. He's already exaggerating. I hope he really has achieved something great, but, until someone else tests it, I'm highly skeptical.
  24. I'd rather see Hawk retire, and have Stone and DJ in the TV booth.
  25. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:24 PM) I'd love to solve the fuel issues with solar power, but solar doesn't create enough electricity on its own. Most times, it's nuclear power that's used. Not really true (about not creating enough electricity). The technology is now approaching a level where its not just a novelty - its a viable solution.
