  1. Yeah, I mean if you look at this as 4D chess the idea was to crush segments of the international market so that an international draft wouldn't look so bad. For ownership they got exactly what they wanted. Years ago Ohtani would have been a hundred million dollar deal. He got next to nothing to come here, and won't for years. For the PA, they got things for the actual MLB players, and were perfectly willing to give up the MiLB and international players to do it.
  2. We have been around quite a few blocks here at Soxtalk, and none of them are quite like the one we have just made. I know 2020 has been a year of loss and struggle for way to much of this country, and our little corner of the interwebs isn't immune from that. I just want to take the time to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a Merry Christmas. Hopefully even if those struggles are still present for you, this time can give even a temporary respite from the pressures of life.
  3. I mean it isn't like Trump cared about these people in the first place.
  4. At the VERY worst, Biden will sign whatever comes in front of him in a month. The GOP has to realize that this could mean the Dems might get to write the bill with both Dem Senators in GA and lock them out of the process completely.
  5. You say this like its a bad thing. I am going on 50 now, and I would hate my life if I only stuck to one career or hobby.
  6. They weren't when Cesepedes was available to sign. The Colas thing literally JUST happened. They would have to tell Cespedes to get bent to sign Colas, and that isn't going to happen or they ruin their ability to sign players in the future.
  7. Great day for the Hawks tank.
  8. This team is just trash. Sell assets and look down the road.
  9. The players union is the ones who allowed this to happen.
  10. That isn't how this works.
  11. I said it the other day, but I almost wonder if the Sox have mapped out these Cuban kids and are actually saving money to spend on these kids as a sort of moneyball situation where everyone else is so into the 16 year olds, that it leaves the market as an inefficiency for the Sox to exploit.
  12. Yeah I mean by not having a lot of 16 year olds signed up during the 19-20 period it left them an extra $2.5 million to sign Yolbert Sanchez. It left them an extra 2 million to sign Cespedes this next period, and the expectation is that they have some untold millions left over to throw at Colas in Jan of 2022. If you think of teams like SD, LAD, BOS, NYY, CHC, TBR ect they are already in agreement with so many younger kids that their 21 and 22 allotments are already spent. They couldn't go after Colas if they wanted to. The 1 other team I can think of right away that typically doesn't spend heavily on young kids in Latin America is Baltimore. In their case I have zero idea what they are committed to for 21 and 22 to know if they could put something together or not.
  13. No one has money left for scenario 1, so maybe, but we are talking about hundreds of thousands and not millions, so it wouldn't be a large difference. In scenario 2, the Sox probably have more room than most or all because they aren't as deep into Latin American signings as other teams and probably have money left over like they did for 2021 until they agreed with Cespedes.
  14. He has two choices. 1. Sign.early for a fraction of the dollars. 2. Sign a year later for money closer to what he expects, but spend 2021 out of US organized baseball. The expectations are he does #2, with the White Sox.
  15. The hope is if he is willing to take a shit offer, he will take it from a team that has been extremely Cuban friendly, and with which he seems to have had prior connections.
  16. Based on what was said before, no. If the deal we have with Cespedes is $2 and not 2.2, we have 300k tops. If the deal is 2.2, we have about 100k left.
  17. If they found it as an intentional action, they could turn the entire class into free agents. If they find the Sox manipulated this class too, we could lose everyone, plus penalties, like they did to BOS and ATL.
  18. This is how I would approach it. If the guy it hitting 94 in the middle of the offseason, that is probably a solid indication he has a few more MPH as he ramps up. Seems like a good sign to me.
  19. You don't think that the injuries are the exact reason his stuff declined? It seems like a really obvious theory that if he is healthy, his stuff should also come back.
  20. With as closely as these things are becoming monitored, it would be a huge red flag if it happened very quickly. Maybe on the verge of a call up or just after it like most players on the Sox have seen.
  21. In addition to the Cespedes talk, Fegan is also getting wind that Colas might wait until 2022 to sign.
  22. Remember originally this period was supposed begin July 2, and teams would have already had people lined up for years for this period. Most teams already have their allotments spent in under the table agreements long before July 2. Now with a few extra months and knowing that trades can't happen in the new period, it is going to be worse than normal
  23. It is hard to say for sure, but the reports are that basically no one has money left for the signing period going on now, nor the one that starts in January.
  24. So he took shots at something that can't be changed in a thread that wasn't about Madrigal's height? Hmmmm.
