FWIW I looked up what the computers say. Fangraphs gives us 6% odds at winning the WS. BRef puts it at 2%. I am comfortable with those numbers in my head. With those kind of odds, how much do you think a Lance Lynn improves them? Even if it increases us say 50%, we go from 6 to 9%. Is it worth giving up pieces that could help us in the years where our odds are higher, either on the field or in a different deal which helps us then, and not now?

Even with that in mind, I think the odds of the White Sox being World Champs increase in 2021 and 2022 for sure. I also think this year will serve as a test drive for exanded playoffs. It might not be 16 teams, but it will be something which will increase the number of teams in.

Realistically, this period was supposed to be over in June, but because of COVID was extended when the last period got pushed to Jan of 21. Effectively, anyone who could be signed, was already signed because the full expectation was that the class would be over with at this point. We are also talking about $243k worth of space, in an environment where the flowers have all been picked, and the weeds remain. This has no effect on the big class we are looking at for next year.

Its about being smart. Increasing low odds by a small amount, at the expense of when we really do have our best chances to win is how you close your window before it really opens.

Add a healthy Leury to that bunch and you have one helluva 4X100 relay team.

I am saying this year, I think our odds are probably less than 10% of winning, and those odds increase as we get to 21, and then peak in those next few years. With those odds, I am not willing to push all in for a slightly larger chance at winning, when we could use those assets down the line when we will have a much higher chance.

The defensive turnaround this year was already pretty insane. Adding two gold glove caliber defenders to the bench takes it to a whole other level. Hopefully Goins and Gonzalez enjoyed those MLB paychecks for a while.

So essentially we gave up money we could have spent in Latin America, in a period that is already dried up, for the right to pay the best pinch runner in baseball for the rest of the season. There really isn't a downside to this.

I have felt that we make the playoffs this year ever since the change to 16 teams. My statement also wasn't to say that they can't win the WS this year. But I 100% feel their best chances are '22-'25 as guys mature, pitching fills in, and young becomes experienced.

Even more specific, Eloy was the one negative defensive player on the team last I saw.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but as of today I do not believe we are "one piece away". While this team is a lot better, I don't see them as the top tier as of today. They have the potential to get there with more experience and growth, but they are not there yet.

Also keep in mind, if Engel is going to be starting more, we won't have him as an off of the bench tool.

With the 10th inning extra runner out there, and the extra roster spots for the playoffs, he could be a great tool as a PR and replacement OF.
