Important poll. Please vote
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) And the only correct answer, of course, is Pauly Shore. If this poll doesn't have Jason Gage as a choice, it is fraud.

LOST!!!!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:19 AM) Ok, so Jack's dad was in a coffin when he got to the island and obviously now is an important go between or is Jacob himself. When Locke reaches the island in a casket, dead, does he also enjoy the elevated status? He already has. He is the leader of the others, and able to communicate with Jacob.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) I agree with you which is why I get uncomfortable when people (Jesse Jackson Sr. etc.) bring up s*** all the time. The issue just becomes a big target and people stop listening after a while. Which is a good point. For some reason when it comes to race in the US, I feel like we spend too much time listening to the 1% outliers on either end of the spectrum, and not enough time listening to the 98% of the country in the middle who aren't racists.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 07:48 AM) Also, I happen to believe that you cannot get rid of racism by constantly pointing out the difference between races. I feel that is counterproductive. I think some decades ago, you had to truly "combat" racism, because of how prevalent it was. Prevalent, not just in terms of being widespread, but in terms of how deep in the soul of most people it resided. At this point, I think we are making it linger more, and sink deeper, by the constant barrage of people pointing out our differences. The better approach right now, IMO, is to get rid of racism by forgetting about race. Choose not to give a s*** what color someone is, or what that means. Judge all people individually. I know it sounds so simple, its almost trite... but I really believe that is the best way to get where we all want to go. I swear all pointing out race at every turn does is reinforce the differences instead of the similarities. I agree that we don't get past things with the obsessive mentaliity that we have today.

LOST!!!!
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Ben at the dock... he went to go kill Penny. He referenced having to go take care of something he promised an old friend... Charles... he proposed Charles he'd kill his daughter... Penny. Ooh, good catch. What other unfinished business does Ben have? Nothing else comes to mind. I did like how they recreated the flight to the island. Sayid was the prisioner this time. Hugo had Charile's guitar case. Locke was Christian's dead body. It makes me wonder if Kate or Sun is pregnant to recreate Clair. Speaking of Kate and Clair, any theories on what happened to Aaron? My wild guess is that they tracked down Clair's mom. I also wonder where we will see the other dude in first class pop up. You don't see random characters in this show. He means something.

Thome Felt Worn Down Near the End of Last Season, Feels Good Now
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 07:32 AM) The reason Thome didn't miss any time in '08 was because he needed his option for '09 to vest. $100 says he doesn't get 450 at-bats this year. He'll take a break in June or July. I don't buy that at all. The Sox were in a tight pennant race all season long, and the guy still hasn't won a ring. That's why he never sat out.

Poreda has a shot at Sox pen
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Yes, people have had success with that. But that doesn't mean that it serves their needs the best. The simple fact with Poreda is that the thing standing between him and a solid front line starting pitcher is a solid 3rd pitch that he can throw for strikes or at least get people to bite on. Out of the bullpen he isn't going to be working on a 3rd pitch. Starting in AAA he will be. With a pitcher trying to add another pitch, starting in the bullpen will be a setback. With a pitcher adapting to throwing against major league hitters, time in the bullpen could be very effective, but right now that's not AP's biggest need. It comes down to how you would answer this. Would Poreda be more valuable to the Sox as a reliever in 2009, or a starter in 2010/11 and beyond?

Contreras could be on Opening Day roster
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) No way the bullpen works out like that where we're carrying 3 lefties. Much more likely is Richard and Thornton as lefties in the pen, and Poreda right where he should be; starting at AAA and getting innings to work on that 3rd pitch. I was hoping Marquez could make the rotation in ST so that Poreda could go down, because that's where he needs to be. Contreras making the rotation would be even better. Couldn't have said it better myself. Don't make the mistake of putting Poreda in Chicago unless he is starting. Let the kid develop his third pitch and become a great starter.

$838 billion stimulus bill passes Senate
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) exactly why the stock market is a joke. They set their expectations SO high that when Apple blew everyone away with the iphone... it wasnt good enough for wall street... they demanded and expected more. So, apple went down. it's dumb. I don't think you understand market dynamics. The stock price of a company is a model of future expectations. If those expectations aren't met, then the company's stock price is too high. Its not dumb, its expectations of future earnings.

Ex-Jenks teammate rips him in SI
QUOTE (scenario @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) Don't start off by assuming that the story has any credibility. McCarthy pitched a career grand total of 26 innings in the Pioneer (rookie) League after being drafted in 2002. He was a late round draft pick who played 1/2 season in the minors... period... in Provo, Utah... before leaving baseball. Meanwhile, in 2002, Jenks spent half a season in California (high A-ball) and the other half in Arkansas (AA)... two places McCarthy never even got close to. Jenks' rookie league year was 2000. And he didn't even play rookie ball in the same city McCarthy did. So... different years... PLUS different cities. In other words, not only have they NEVER played together... it's unlikely that they ever even MET. Wow. What a low life.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 12:13 AM) The dollar is still weak, relative to the Euro and extremely weak relative to the Yen. It's not 1.60 to the Euro anymore, but its still worth less than when Euro trading was introduced in the 90s. With the EU facing much of the same crisis we are, its a wonder the dollar isn't stronger. The Dollar is down nearly 20% from its 52 week high against the Yen as well. The Yen has stayed very strong because of the carry trade. Its not a very good currency to compare the dollar to, if you want to see its relative strength.
