Merge the USDA and FDA?
Merge them. 100% yes. I would argue there are literally hundreds of places in our federal government where we would be doing this to eliminate duplicity and create efficency.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 06:36 AM) For the same reason people assume the Democrats should capitulate to the Republicans. The perception of what bipartisanship should be is pretty absurd. The party that's in power is going to get more of what it wants, naturally. Why should it be any other way? Bush did the exact same thing for eight years and was ripped for it. I would say that turnabout would be fair play.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 09:00 PM) How far did they expect Obama to change his position? If they weren't going to vote for it anyway, they should have said "don't waste your time" instead of wasting his time. Doesn't that work the other way? Why is the assumption that the Repubs should capitulate to Obama?

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) What the Republicans want is pretty much the opposite of what he wants, why would he do that? He's the president. "negotiation" means you land somewhere in the middle, and they actually did give concessions to the Republicans. But as whole the bill still was objectionable. Why does compromise only seem to work one way? Because Obama through them a couple of bones, they are still supposed to vote for something that overall they are diametricly opposed to? That makes zero sense.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) I'm quite certain I've addressed a number of those points before, most notably the fact that the GSE's simply weren't a major part of the real subprime expansion, but the thing that hurt them was the elimination of $8 trillion or so in total housing wealth in this country. But, I don't think I've posted the analyses that strike at the heart of one of your claims...that the Community Reinvestment Act was a major contributor in causing banks to create bad loans because they were required to do so. It turns out...your claim that those funds are more likely to end up in foreclosure is simply inaccurate. I'll cite my data from a statement by one of the Fed Governors last December. That is a nice twist of statistics... Less than subprime. That means basically nothing. Not all CRA loans were subprime, that is why the statistic was inbetween prime and subprime. Got any other bogus stats you want to throw out?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) Then vote against it and abandon the theatrics and stop pretending like you actually want to compromise. I have no issues with that. The same could be said to Obama who flat out said he wasn't going to do what the republicians wanted... How exactly is that compromise and negotiation?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) Even though your constituents voted for and support what the President is proposing? Not everyone's states and districts voted for Obama.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) He met with GOP members of the House and Senate on more than one occasion to get feedback and buy in. The bill had additional tax cuts added to appease them. The house version passed with a grand total of ZERO Republican votes. Obama lost his cool for 1 second and reminded people that he won the election. Let me ask you this. If the opposition President had met with you regarding a bill that you disagreed with the vast majority of, would you vote for it because a small part of it was something you liked? Would the President meeting with you honestly change your mind if you still thought in your heart that most of bill was wrong? I don't get how stuff a few bones into a trillion dollar bill is supposed to placate a party that disagrees with the huge premise of the bill. To me, it doesn't make a difference. If you believe the bill is going to do more harm than good, you should vote against it.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) The loopholes in interrogation methods. The method of standing up for what Nancy Pelosi wrote for him in the House version of the "stimulus" - telling House GOP "I won". Yea, some change. Some outreach. There's a lot more but the point's the same. There is always this doozy. http://taxcut.barackobama.com/

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) He has gone out of his way to talk to GOP members of the House and Senate and get their feedback. What news have you been watching? Bush used to have both parties up to the White House, that doesn't mean he was exactly bipartisian.

Sox Sign Ben Broussard to minor league deal
QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) Anyone have a problem with the sox signing Ben Broussard to a minor league deal. I think its fine, its just an insurance in case PK goes on the DL for a while at some point. Why would anyone have a problem with a minor league contract for this guy?

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) Geithner's guess. I'm still not certain that they actually have any clue what is going on. I think the markets are down pretty heavily on this plan because he didn't propose more government money yet. Anyway, just to point this part out...Wall Street continues to prevail in getting what it wants, because they haven't been wrong about anything yet. No one knows what this is going to look like 6 weeks from now, let alone 6 months from now.

Sox Sign Ben Broussard to minor league deal
I'm not so sure that Brandon Allen starts at AAA. They may well leave him in Birmingham to see if he can replicate his half season there last year.

Soxtalk Sponsorship on Baseball Reference
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 11:30 PM) Call up local companies and have them run ads on this page to make money for the site. Who knows, this crew can turn this operation into a national concept. Its been kicked around at various times, and the concensus is that we like things the way that they are. The bills are paid pretty much by what is out there, and we like being independant of all outside influence.

BOLD predictions for 2009
QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 08:25 PM) Rays finish in 4th place and under .500. History shows this is a solid call. There is a nice history of the team that loses the world series falling back to earth the next year.
