  1. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) If the contract was honored either the trained workers would be doing the work, or the volunteers would be doing the work. Sorry if my town is in danger, I am not leaving the lawyers time to go back and read contract language to decide what to do. I am gathering up as many people as possible and sending them out to save the town, contract be damned. If the local union officials have a problem with that, they need to reexamine what they represent.
  2. Pin this b****es
  3. 52-37 +2.5 games thank you Boston
  4. Well this thread stayed relevant long! OK how about a subject change to... Who got the better deal, the Cubs for Harden or the Brewers for Sabathia?
  5. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Well maybe if enough people whine about the govenent screwing up, they'll have change of heart. Perhaps they have their own "brothers" that suffered from the flood. The union wanted the work. If they couldn't handle it after accepting the work, that's tough. Like the contract usually say, it's their work unless they refuse it. I'm sure the town would have been OK with being destroyed as long as the contract was honored... And people wonder why the union is falling into history with the typewriter and telegraph...
  6. So I heard Barack Obama was being picked for the AL All-Star team based on his work ethic and ability to inspire a pitching staff.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) I better not hear this as an excuse, especially after Jose last season being given a free pass. A free pass? By who? He was slaughtered around these parts.
  8. I'd guess Haegar is the guy up based on his recent success, and Ozzies want for a long man.
  9. QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) So long Pablo. I saw that Game 2 ALCS live in person and will never forget it. I swear Uribe must have 9 lives or something. Hey, since the Indians are in trading mode, maybe they can give us Andy Gonzalez back! For those keeping score at home, please note the obligatory Andy Gonzalez post was in #44 in this thread
  10. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) The difference here is I believe the majority are being treated, just either at none or reduced payments at ERs and other resources that will not turn away patients. Are you suggesting we just have to live with the fact that a sizeable portion of our population will not receive any health care except in dire emergencies? Is that a good public health policy? ANd I agree that the increase in patients will have to be carefully considered. i didn't say it was good, I am just rooted in the reality that anyone who says they can treat everyone and not destroy the system is a con artist.
  11. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 11:05 AM) They're not suing, they're just filing a grievance per the contract. Why bother to write up a contract and face the possibily of a strike if you are not going to abide by it? What if they ended up donating some of that money? Why bother doing any good if some self-serving group is going to screw you over in the end anyway? I wonder how they would have reacted if the same people had stood by and watched as the walls were breached and the town flooded.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) GP- Thanks for these threads. Truly, good stuff. Great discussion column. I may not always agree with your take, but, the topics are solid and so is the writing. Now, be warned, I'm about to dig into you on one of your previous column points. Not disparaging your columns - just calling out a specific point you made. In a previous column, you stated that YOU could hit Gavin Floyd. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on his breakout season thus far? Was it a fluke? Did he change some things that you have observed, that have allowed him to be successful? Is he just better than most of us thought? And most importantly... could you hit a Gavin Gloyd curveball? Seriously though, keep up the columns. Great stuff. -NSS I have seen him hit, he couldn't hit the old Gavin Floyd
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 12:17 PM) How many ERs are underutilized? Here it is a 6-7 hour wait in an ER on a good day. I see your point, and it is a excellent one and would have to be addressed for any improvements to our system to work. But which is more feasible, more Doctors and clinics like at Cosco or more ERs offering treatment for no renumeration? Perhaps if providers were actually being paid for treating these patients we would decrease crowding in ERs and Doctors offices could actually expand and shorten up those wait times? I don't think that having millions of patients receiving treatment for free is a good for the system either. There just isn't excess capacity as I see it anywhere in the health care system, especially for 50,000,000 people. There is no where to move the people that we have now, let alone all of the new ones.
  14. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Doctor's offices instead of ERs. Outpatient clinics instead of ERs. Currently, many uninsured and indigent people will show up in an ER with symptoms that do not require emergency procedures. Doctors can, and will, turn them away if they cannot pay, hospitals generally will not. Also, small things become bigger when ignored. When they cannot afford a Doctor and wait, a small infection becomes bigger and they are in the ER. A lack of prenatal care causes some pregnancies to go astray. That is what I meant by a more appropriate facility. Basically what Alpha pointed out with the chain stores offering low cost options. Another local issue here are the expectant mothers from Mexico who just "happen to go into labor during a visit to the US". Generally they cannot pay and their children receive automatic US citizenship. I'm in favor of eliminating the automatic citizenship. Like I said, how many doctors out there do you know of that are underutilized? Between recently having a vacesectomy, sick kids, routine doctor visits, and the wifes follow ups after pregnancy, I have yet to see a doctor that had a bunch of open slots to just accept a bunch of new people. Every doc I have talked to had weeks worth of wait for anything that wasn't an emergency.
  15. Ah yes the three types of lies...
  16. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) The White House sure likes bury it's head- The synopses: "well... umm..... politically, we dont want them to say that, so obviously they didnt... you made it up. We reserve the right to scrub his comments from the record" Let me clarify for the white house what he said: “The current trend is to reach an agreement on a memorandum of understanding either for the departure of the forces or to put a timetable on their withdrawal,” That's pretty clear to me. Sure it is, after someone else has translated it into English...
  17. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 07:55 AM) I believe many are being treated already. In hospital ERs, without compensation to the hospitals. One area for improvement is moving these patients from ERs into a more appropriate venue. But that does brings up an interesting point. Perhaps the level of health resources in this country cannot support all the people here and having uninsured people is a good thing? To where? I don't think I have ever heard of an underutilized facility. How many unemployed Doctors are there that we can use for people?
  18. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 07:40 AM) No, of course not. That would have to be addressed. Are you suggesting that is an unsolvable problem? Where would we find the health care facilities and professionals to treat something like 50 million more people (the 15% of people number that is being thrown about)?
  19. Happy Birthday Guys
  20. So giving people more health care, and less reason to be judicious about the care they seek is going to improve those conditions?
  21. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 06:56 AM) Amen. You may or may not have meant it this way, but I took it to mean that not just unions would be guilty of this. I know you are very active in your community, the schools, YMCA, running a community message board, etc. All this our grandparents would have thought of as "community service". Now community service is what a celebrity in California gets for killing his wife. It happened quietly, but we did ourselves a disservice when we made community service a punishment. Following that reasoning, is it any wonder that some workers feel that someone was stealing their bread by performing something like this? My generation and even the previous one to a great extent is a HUGE "ME" generation. It pains me to see people who give of themselves selflessly get kicked in the face for it. It discourages one of the things that really pushed our country to being one of the greatest in the world. Not being forced to give to those less fortunate, but WANTING to give. I don't think of it as anything special, just something that we all think about, and contribute what we can. Some people can give money, some can give time, others can give both.
  22. Has Milwaukee passed them with the Sabathia trade? Is St Louis the favorite after playing so well without so many key players? Does it all not matter because the Cubs are too deep?
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 07:20 PM) Technically, sure. But you'd have to be a huge jackass to sue because some volunteers sandbagged to help out the community. IMO, anyway. That is pretty much how I feel. What kind of D-bag sues the because people were trying to save your town for free? You have a nutshell right there of everything wrong with 21st century America.
  24. 51-37 +1.5 games 53 straight days in first place.
  25. QUOTE (chisoxdavid @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) I got a couple of questions, 1. Is it too late to join? 2What is WSI? 3Do I have to check-in in here and get approved or can I just show up? Thanks in advance. 1.Its not too late to join. 2.WSI is Whitesoxinteractive.com, another fine independant White Sox message board. 3.You don't have to get "approved" to play, but we would like to know ahead of time if possible, that way we can have an idea of how many people are coming to play.
