Gov. Palin Resigns (Quits)
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) I hijacked this thread a few days ago, it's not about Palin anymore. It's ALWAYS about Palin. At least in her mind.

But will the funeral be in Shermer...?
Wow, that's a surprise. I'll have to put Breakfast Club on and toast his memory. RIP

Shark Week!
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) Are you saying that it is completely impossible that a Great White could get to be that big? I mean, it doesn't sound like an enormous stretch to go from 21' to 25'. You're the authority around these parts, though, so what do you think? And in regards to the scuba tank, even if it didn't explode, I would figure that the force of the tank (as they usually go flying around when ruptured) would possibly kill or at least irreparably injure the shark. No, I'm not saying 25' is impossible at all — it's at the high end of size ranges that have been historically reported and only 4' more than a validated capture. It was the insane. megaladon-type sizes of the subsequent films that got well into the realm of absurdity.

Shark Week!
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:33 AM) Actually, they busted that myth in the first season they did the Shark Week Myth Busters episodes. And what was their take on it? Typical Hollywood embellishment?

Shark Week!
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) was it fiery in the 1st movie? I only remember the pressure explosion. The only time I remember Jaws getting burned was the second movie when it was electrocuted Yeah, maybe not fiery. . . I recall always doubting that a ruptured air tank would have caused the damage that one did though.

Shark Week!
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) lol Flaxx. But more to my point, they were testing out all of the capabilities of a shark vs what Jaws did in a movie. And Jamie kep mentioning "a 17-19 foot shark could never do something like that". But Jaws was supposed to be like a freak 30 foot shark, wasnt it? It definitely wasnt your normal sized Great White. Anyhow, it annoyed me. The shark in the first Jaws was supposed to be 25' — stiil bigger than the accepted max. record of 21' for a Cuban specimen from the 1940s, but not nearly as large as the (likely erroneous) 30'+ historic reports. The biggest myth that needed busting from jaws is the myth that a ruptured scuba tank would cause a fiery, head-exploding spectacle as it did in the film.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 09:20 AM) I was really disappointed with the mythbusters treatment of jaws. Very Very much so

How often do you... *ahem*
I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the relative lack of self-servicing euphemisms that have been posted here. Much like how the Inuit supposedly have 200 words for snow, I figured SoxTalkers would have pages worth of names for this recreational endeavor. Turning Japanese? Putting hair on the palms? Doing it until I need glasses? Killing Kittens??

Shark Week!
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 05:34 AM) Shark Week has taught me that spear fishermen are more vulnerable to shark attacks than any other. That is not true if you are considering all bites worldwide and not just major attack encounters. There were just under 200 total confirmed unprovoked attacks on divers (whether spearfishing or not) during the last century. In contrast, there were nearly 450 attacks on surfers and over 700 on shallow shoreline bathers. Shark Attack's Versus Victim's Activity (1900-1999)

Films Thread
Sigourney herself has said that she thinks incorporating Ripley into a prequel would be a bad idea. She's jazzed about Scott being back at the helm though.
