The last couple of installments of the Alien film franchise, especially the gawdawful last AVP film all but dashed any hope I had of ever seeing another decent Alien film. This news has completely changed that.. :headbang
  2. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) exactly.. maybe a new one will be that Michael Jackson didn't die, that he's still alive and planning a huge comeback??? With Elvis and Jim Morrison as opening acts. What about the Paul is Dead conspiracy? I don't think that one's been mentioned yet.
  3. A secret organization out of Detroit is out to make sure that I never own a car that makes it to 200K miles before it dies. Like clockwork, just as I approach that milestone my poor cars commit suicide. It's the only logical explanation.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 04:19 PM) "purity of essence" Communist plot to sap and impurify the precious bodily fluids of the American people with fluoridated water.
  5. Honestly, Tex could have just cut to the chase with the Superfecta of SoxTalk polls: What movie do you want to watch with your favorite SoxTalk poster while enjoying your favorite meat collection this summer???
  6. I've actually travelled more this summer than most, so my big summer ambition actually involves a project at work. I have a 3 m giant squid (Architeuthis dux) in a large formalin bath that I'd like to build an exhibit display for and get on public exhibit by the end of September (it would be 4m + but its two long tentacular club arms are missing). It's going to likely involve a lot of acrylic and metal fabrication work with some custom lighting, and I'm trying to do it on a budget. At the same time, it's a scientifically valuable specimen (only the 27th specimen recorded from southeastern Atlantic waters), so I want to do right by 'Ol Stinky, as he's come to be known. Yeah, I know how to party like a rock star during my summers.
  7. Cool! This is the first year in about 5 years I didn't shell out for Extra Innings package and tried to go with radio feeds only. Nice to catch a game on teevee once in a while. I miss getting all the games on Extra Innings and keep threatening to buy the second half at the reduced rate. And then the Sox cough up a bunch of games and I put my wallet away again.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) I love the price is right, but their Pricing isnt always accurate. Drew Carey is the worst gameshow host ever. Horribly, brutally, awfully bad.
  9. QUOTE (Pods70Rowand33 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 03:36 PM) What is your research on? What do you plan to do when you you're finished? I'm hoping to go to grad school in the fall of 2010. I'll be finished with my undergrad in May of 2010. He's getting his degree in Star Trek. Specifically, he's busy circling Uranus and searching for Klingons. *crickets•
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) Defend. When's your date set for? Make sure to get good and drunk the night before.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) Saw Harry Potter. Very unexciting movie. The film couldn't stray very far from Book 6, which was a slower book than Book 5, intended to fill in a lot of backstory to set the stage for Deathly Hallows. Even with all the shortcuts, omissions and liberties they took, It was a better film than I was expecting.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 01:33 AM) So, I was flipping through the 1st Harry Potter book on a whim and something odd caught my attention. I get to the part where Harry gets his ticket from Hagrid for King’s Cross, finds a ride, ends up at the train station and (here’s the part where this kicks in) has Absolutely NO IDEA what to do. He proceeds to ask a handful of regular people at the train station, speaking to them in what is essentially, babble, and each incident of odd, alone 11-year old talking in weird language goes unreported, but this is nitpicky stuff my main concern is this: How many human born students did Hogwarts end up screwing over, by not telling them the process of how to get on the Wizard train? Was every student supposed to rely on stumbling upon some other Wizard family who’ve apparently been trained in this endeavor? What if no one was there at that particular moment, do we have abandoned human wizard kids in a train station, with no means of getting to school or returning home, and who are now s*** out of luck? One would think there’d be some sort of check to this: an undercover wizard train adviser assigned too this particular issue, but no such person is ever mentioned in the novels. This is of some concern and needs to be addressed. Also, how much of this post is sober and serious? You’ll never know. Well, if the entire student body of Hogwarts is instructed to report to Platform 9 3/4 at the same time on the same date, then it's pretty likely the Muggle-borns will run into a helpful wizarding family like the Weasleys. right? I think that's all part of JK's literary surprises-round-every-corner literary device taht she employs throughout the first couple of books — this is a foreign world to Harry and he always needed a lot of help getting through it, even from the very beginning.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) What's the big deal it's just those Twilight kids sitting and....OH MY GOD IS THAT WESLEY SNIPES looks to be the sequel with the shortest running time ever.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 09:54 AM) So now I'm a "child abuser" if I spank my kid? No. And I'm in total agreement with your earlier post about different corrective means working for different kids. I don't pretend to have all the answers when it comes to parenting, and I know I get it wrong as often as I get it right. But. . . the clearest demarcation in this particular continuum is the one separating parents that resort to physical violence (however mild) as a behavioral deterrent and those that don't — not the one separating the parents who employ an entirely non-injurious spanking versus those who beat the crap out of their kids and have convinced themselves that's what passes for "firm parenting." We all know about the intergenerational cycle of aggression and violence created in these cases, and I'm not remotely suggesting you or anyone in this conversation is in that camp. But that extreme represents the antithesis of the parent and person I'm trying to be, so spanking versus not spanking is one of the easier choices for me as a parent. If I've made a decision to attempt (not always successfully) to instill in my kids a core belief that violence is never the proper course in conflict resolution, then I'd be shooting myself in the foot if i were to employ spanking as a corrective tool. Truth is, like most parents there are plenty of times I want to throttle 'em. Instead, i try (and often fail at) other forms of corrective action.
  16. Hope it's a grand one.
  17. whoever we are wherever we're from we shoulda noticed by now our behavior is dumb and if our chances expect to improve it's gonna take a lot more than trying to remove the other race or the other whatever from the face of the planet altogether To arms? Two arms! hooray that's great, two legs ain't bad unless there's a crate they ship the parts to momma in for souvenirs . . . two ears not his not hers, but what the hey, the Good Book says it's gotta be that way
  18. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 11:26 PM) What? I'll reserve comment until I figure out what you mean. I didn't think I was being particularly cryptic with my comment.
  19. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 10:29 PM) Spanking your kids today is the only way to teach them the lesson that when they grow up they shouldn't spank their kids. Exactly right. How else are you going to teach your kids not to be s***ty abusive parents unless you really take the time to be s***ty abusive parents to your kids?
  20. Back from the Family vacation to DC and the Virginia mountains. hard to get back into the groove, but I did miss the simple pleasure of a rum grog in my favorite Maori head tiki mug.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) Trailer for Tron Legacy is online and is freaking sweet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6jfm0hq0bk...feature=related Wow. basically the same teaser trailer premiered at the 2008 Comi-Con. but in spectacular high quality. This film could be the phenomenal 25-years-later sequel that the Star wars prequels weren't. In this case, the sharp modern CGI is going to contribute to the storyline in which the cyber world introduced in Tron has continued to evolve. It won't be the jarring visual discontinuity of the SW prequels compared to the effects of the original films that are supposed to occur later in the story timeline. Ireally want to see this, and I really want it to be good.
