QUOTE (juddling @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 02:33 AM) Remember when the Democrats went apes*** over Larry Craig? It wasn’t the fact that he may have asked for gay sex or was gay, it was the hypocrisy, remember? It was the hypocrisy, as it was for Elliot Spitzer, as it is here as well, sadly. Anybody who stumps to talk up the importance of family values, etc., and then is found to be sorely lacking in them in his own life, has made the issue one he can and should be taken to task over. Not because a moral lapse makes you a bad politician or even a bad person. But because you're privately participating in the very thing you're publicly rallying against. Eventually it had to happen, juddling and me agreeing on something in the Filibuster.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) At least he is one Democrat in favor of drilling. Zing! To say that I'm disappointed by the lack of judgment Edwards has shown here would be a gross understatement.

I've not used the term 'redneck' for about two years, since YAS expressed strong objection and insult to my use of the term here. I was not referring directly to him, of course. Rather, I think used the term in the course of a thread about religion, evolution education, and whatnot. Being an American certainly should include respect for ideals the nation was founded on, including the Constitution. Separation of Church and State derives from the First Amendment, was further clarified by Thomas Jefferson in subsequent writings, and has been upheld by US courts at all levels up to and including the US Supreme Court. BearSox, you are the one in this thread who does not understand what it means to be American. Just as YAS was offended by my past poor choice of the word redneck, it appears there are a number of posters here, including myself, who are offended by your myopic characterization of what is and is not American. Or Christian, for that matter, as respect for the beliefs of others is a central tenet of most flavors of Christianity.

Suskind:White House ordered CIA to back-dated letter

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) Like who Deep Throat is/was? Some people are good at keeping secrets, which is why they are in the upper reaches of government and military. Not saying I agree with this, but the timing isn't something that concerns me. Yeah, but it's not like you'd expect the CIA to be capable of secrecy or anything. . . -
QUOTE (easyw @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) I was there about 12 years ago. Dublin is a boring, expensive dump. Get out to the countryside. Belfast was more excitied. I got lost wandering through the neighborhoods looking for the row house Van Morrison was born in (I found it - little plaque out front). The exchange rate is so terrible right now - go to a nice third world country instead. Bugger Belfast. Give Teddy back his head.

Suskind:White House ordered CIA to back-dated letter

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) If this was really out there, why did Rather have to make s*** up to report about? Aside from that being a gross mischaracterization of the Killian/Bush guard service story and the subsequent forgery claims, it is an utterly illogical line of reasoning. Two journalists investigating two entirely different stories, and because one reporter runs with dubious documents that should have been better authenticated, that has bearing on the veracity of Suskind's story. . . how?? -
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 02:48 PM) Ok, someone remind me ... it's been a few years. Who's number was Hudson3-2700? I believe that was Magikist Carpets. . . "Call Buchelle at: [insert Deep Voice here] Hudson3-2700" Why the hell is that still stuck in my head after all these years?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) Probability tends to contradict "common sense" odds, as in the birthday example or the famous "Let's Make a Deal" door example. Probability is common sense. Most people just don't have any. . .

Us Tinfoil-Hatters and Bush-Bashers will have no trouble believing this, while the Wingers will publicly accept the adamant denials of the White House and privately hope they buried the bodies deep enough for it never to be proven. And so it goes. Link to full story on Politico. I know, I know. . . Suskind is just trying to sell a book and it's "gutter journalism" and the charges will be completely ignored by the MSM (because they are too liberal, so the pretzel logic tells me). Then how about some other journalists talk to this Richar guy from the CIA, rather than listening to George Tenet's misrecollection of events. Better yet, get him to testify before Congress. Link to ThinkProgress story - Wingers beware! I'd like to say I'll be watching this story as it develops, but with our lazy MSM and spineless congressional majority, who am I kidding?

AssHat is correct, it is the much more common 1 in 365. Just like the odds of rolling ANY two of the same numbers on a pair of dice is 1 in 6, rather than one in 36. The much bigger longshot is rolling two of a SPECIFIC, predetermined number - e.g., a 1 in (6*6) chance = 1 in 36 chance of rolling snake eyes. Similarly, the chances of you and your friend both being married on June 6th (a single specific day, not just any day) is 1 in (365•265) = 1 in 133,225. Face it, Tex, aside from that spiffy short bus you used to ride to school, you ain't all that special.

All your direction sets are wrong. The all leave out the obligatory stop at Fat Johnnie's for hot dogs and tamales before (and/or after) the game!

Welcome back, glad you had fun. Durty Nellys is a fun pub. Did you get to the Palace Bar while you were in Dublin? An amazing Victorian-era gin palace, it was the big bar in the Commitments. Did you get a chance to try the Jameson Crested Ten? Other than the 18 year limited reserve, I think that's the best whiskey they do.

Interesting story and interesting history. The bit about the brewery losses in teh Chicago Fire giving the Milwaukee brewers a chance to expand is an interesting bit of history. I always have my doubts about "original recipe" claims, though. Even if modern equivalents of all the original ingredients could be found, the brewing process itself has become so modernized that the flavor profile and mouthfeel in the finished product is probably not going to match the original. I also don't believe that the recipe formulators typically win the battle with th beancounters at the megas. An 1850 American brewery certainly wasn't using supplemental amylaze enzymes to digest the starch in the cereal adjuncts, they just relied on the natural enzymes intrinsic to the 6-row barley. From a modern standpoint, that's highly inefficient, but in 1850 it dictated how much adjunct went into the grain bill and also how you had to approach the brewing process in terms of pretreating the cereal to open it up to that enzyme barley during the mash. I've had a couple of excellent homebrewed and craft-brewed interpretations of pre-prohibition American light lager, but none of the "originals" that have come out of the megas have been up to snuff. In most cases, I think that's because the beancounters are the ones calling the shots.
