QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 07:56 AM) Wont he have to dig him up to do that?I thought he was already dead. No, he's only mostly dead.
  2. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 08:45 AM) . . . and establishes a radio listening audience that is eclipsed only by Morning Edition on NPR. . . . where the smart people hang out.
  3. Adam Kennedy Bot9 rbi double and there's suddenly a hope that the Cards can pull this one out. . .

Very cool. I'm jealous as well.
  5. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) No I have, over a campfire also. I just thought I'd re-inforce the fact that I tucked into some more of Skippy last night. On Skewers as well. I just hope it didn't cost you oodles of Vickies, otherwise you might not have any left to spend on the beaut Sheilas. And I hope the skippy was bonzer and didn't send you to the dunny for a chunder. If so, next time just stick with a nice plate of chook or maybe a yabbie on the barbie and a stubby or two.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 02:30 AM) Mark had been pitchin so well. Wonder what happened? He couldn't see AJ to pitch to him. . . you know, on account of the camo and all.
  7. I'm 100% fine with whatever gesture of recognition the Sox want to give the armed services, and whenever and however they want to do it. I think it's very classy, as is giving military a deal on admission. That said, I thought those camo jerseys were ugly as hell.
  8. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 09:28 AM) It seems animals from all over the place are popping up in Iowa. Two boys found a 2 foot alligator in floodwaters must be one of them there albino mutant sewer gaters.
  9. Happy birthday to one of the statesmen of Soxtalk, and not one of these young hooligans running wild all over the place. Now, the rest of you damn kids, stay off of Ed's lawn while he's trying to nap!
  10. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) Had a soccer player one time collide heads with another player. It was his forehead and when I went to palpate it, it moved like when you push on a ballon. It was one of the more creepy injuries, I've felt. The guy ended up getting a metal screen implanted in his forehead because the bone shattered into too many pieces. He also walked a little crooked after the injury. (just kidding about the last part) I nearly majored in sports medicine as an undergrad. Hearing stuff like that, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have lasted that long.
  11. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 09:48 PM) Great umpiring in the bottom of the 9th by home plate ump. BS strike calls. Unreal. Those pitches were at least 8 inches off the plate. Damn, I really dislike Kerry Wood.
  12. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) I'll just throw an obvious one out there: Favorite all time Sox players. José Paniagua

Bad as it is for you, it's got to be 5 times worse with the Florida yahoos. And I agree as well.
  14. QUOTE (3E8 @ Jul 4, 2008 -> 01:08 AM) Favorite bass lines That's easy, Stren 4lb test on an Shakespeare Ugly Stick with a good old Zebco 33. Oh, wait. you meant bass, not bass, didn't you. My bad.
  15. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Yeah 55 bucks for a 300-level seat is too much loot for anyone. Arena shows blow. The Police/Elvis Costello show I saw in May was a glaring exception to that general rule. I was just about as high up as you can get and the show was still one of the 10 best I have ever seen.
  16. I'm a big vintage Windwood fan (SDG, Traffic, Blind Faith, and maybe the first three solo albums), but I agree, and I've found everything he's done from Roll With It on to be pretty lifeless, including the Traffic reunion stuff. Haven't seen Petty live since the late 80s, and he was great then.
  17. QUOTE (3E8 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 09:02 PM) The new Alkaline Trio album is quite good. Steaming in its entirety on their myspace Steaming is a compliment? Does that mean I got all bent out of shape for no reason when some guy called me a steaming pile?
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 3, 2008 -> 12:34 AM) PLEASE. These are the only greenies that Flaxx knows these days... That's some sort of old guy crack, isn't it? Well. . . you just stay the hell off my lawn, and don't bother me again until Matlock is over.
  19. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:57 PM) It's not, but a respect their right to not stage the play. This was not a case where someone wanted to stage it and was told no. The same group that looked into it, decided against it. I won't continue debating the societal pros and cons of proceeding with the production or not, but you are being way too simplistic about the ramifications of the decision being made. Quite the contrary of what you are suggesting, I think this is exactly a case where someone wanted to stage it and was told no. Well, actually, they were told yes and then much later thy were told no. And this isn't the decision of the creative team putting on the production. This is a snap decision by a high-ranking official of the Wilmette Park District. And it's very different and monumentally worse to have greenlighted the production and then to kill it, versus your alternate scenario of never considering pursuing the production. This decision was made on or around July 1st, and the production was set to open on July 10th. That means that dozens of actors, musicians, costume and set designers, the director, the choreographer, the producers, etc., who have by now spent months mounting the production and rehearsing the show are SOL because a Park District superintendent only now decided to read the script and lyrics. It also represents a hell of a lot of money laid out only to cancel the production barely a week before opening night. And you don't think that's any worse than the hypothetical theater group who never considered pursuing this particular production, never tied up the time and talents of dozens of people, never wasted how ever many thousands of dollars on a production that never sees the light of day? Seriously?? Well then, yes, I disagree.

    Films Thread

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) Will Smith usually has a certain charisma about him that almost no matter what I'll leave the theatre having enjoyed the flick. Originally I didn't want to see this movie, but the previews were so damn entertaining. I was really jazzed about seeing this one, but today I heard Kenneth Turan's NPR review that says the film takes a wrong turn mid-way through that it never recovers from so that tempered my excitement a bit. Probably still worth seeing to get that required dose fo summer blockbuster.
  21. Kool beanz, Tex! Probably going out on a turtle walk this weekend to see some nesting. The leatherbacks have come and gone and the loggerheads are winding down, but there should still be a lot of greens coming up.
  22. Wired did a nice job with that article. One interesting and important historical point is left out though, namely, the reason Darwin spent the 24 years after the Beagle Voyage in composing his "long argument", versus the slapdash treatment wallace gave the subject. Darwin was waiting to publish in deference to the sensibilities thew Beagle's Captain, Robert Fitzroy. First, Chuck D owed a debt to Fitzroy for bringing him onto the Beagle as the "Ship's Gentleman", as his self-appointed role as ship's naturalist was strictly an avocation – a way to occupy his mind and time while not socializing with Fitzroy (the captain did not socialize with common crew, hence the need/niche for the ship's gentleman). After the Beagle expedition, Darwin started to formalize some of his ideas on natural selection, and of course he was eager to share some of his insights with Fitzroy. The Captain, a religiously devout individual, was aghast at some of the 'heresy' Young Chuck was espousing, and that fact was not lost on Darwin. Gentleman that he was, after the voyage ended he made up his mind to wait until Fitzroy passed before widely publishing his theory. This gave him more than two decades to refine, revise, and substantiate his theory with dozens of examples from his observations of nature. If not for Wallace stumbling onto the same basic theory, Darwin would have no doubt delayed his own publication even longer. Fitzroy, who didn't die until 1865 (suicide, btw), was deeply offended when Origin of Species came out, and felt betrayed by his old friend. The year after its publication, Fitzroy was in attendance at a scientific meeting where Darwin's theory was being debated (Fitzroy was himself a respected meteorologist and was there to present a paper). He actually stood up during the debate and raised a Bible over his head and implored the attendees to believe in the word of God and not the word of man. And now you know. . . the rest of the story.
  23. This team is so much fun right now. I hope they stay hot until ASB at least. :gosoxretro:
