  1. QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) Swoon. Here's hoping.
  2. QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 08:49 PM) The Rays announcers said that the GS by Carl was only the 2nd swing of the inning. I'm loving these Rays right now! I was planning on driving over with the family for the game, but couldn't swing the day off. I'm pizzed, I'd love to be there to see all the teary-eyed Cub fans.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) I'm listening to this on WGN Radio, I don't think Ron Santo is there because I'm not hearing "oh noooo"s. 8-3, this game is OVA. I picked the Rays feed instead, to get my Dave Wills fix.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) Has a team ever been up by and down by 6 runs in the same game? Yeah, it just happened today if I'm not mistaken.
  5. Man, I love Crawford when he's playing anybody but us. :headbang
  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) I don't really think that was what FlaSoxx was getting at - it would be ludicrous to suggest that the things the terrorists do or believe are morally acceptable. That was more focused on the fact that we as Americans can't just act with impunity, and assume that no matter what we do it's automatically going to be morally superior by default just because we're Americans. We're supposed to be holding ourselves to a higher standard. Because, simply, we are better. And more to the point, the administration, the Pentagon, the CIA interrogators, the Gitmo lawyers. . . are not America. Not the Americas I grew up believing in. They don't speak for the America I grew up believing in, they don't act on behalf of the America I grew up believing in, and, they are an insult to the America I grew up believing in. And Tim Russert's statement, sincere in time of tragedy though it was, is a fatally flawed comparison. Comparing the whole of America to "the terrorists" is about as meaningful as comparing America to "the child rapists" or "the death row murderers". That's called an unfair comparison and it doesn't mean anything. Certainly it shouldn't mean that individuals within the government or the military can concoct, approve of, and commit the equivalent of war crimes and think that it's ok because we're America and the rest of the world is not.
  7. This video is so NSFW it's not funny. But this kid is really talented and just 17.
  8. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) Oh okay. I remember it being sort of controversial up here because Molson's big seller was Molson Canadian. And they used to have these famous Canadian nationalist commercials and I believe their slogan is still "I am Canadian". And here they were merging with Coors, a Republican company at that. "I Am Canadian" Those were great ads. And, sadly, they retired that slogan a couple years back for the very lame slogan "It Starts Here".
  9. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 08:18 PM) Molson is actually owned by Coors now. Technically, no, Molson and Coors merged to form Molson Coors in 2005, but Molson was not bought up by Coors. The Molson family still has 50% ownership of the company's controlling trust. That's all about to be turned on its ear as well though, with the approval early this month of a joint venture with SABMIller to form MillerCoors to handle all American production and sales and to compete with A-B. Honestly, you need a scorecard to keep track of all the megabrew megamergers.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) IMDB is just based on the public opinion and they have some funny system in place to prevent downvoting or upvoting. Metacritic weighs the critic's opinions more than Rottentomatoes. And that is why I have pretty much abandoned IMDB. [/Gives Tizzle his opening]
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) Ya know I was thinking this too, but if you actually look at all the science and technology that comes out of all that money, which is then put into our everyday lives, it's not a bad investment. Don't forget about TANG!
  12. Jenks' point, and Southsider's, is a good one – that budget restraints and the lack of a global space race have greatly diminished the manned space flight results from NASA (On the other hand, they deserve props for their much more cost-effective and productive unmanned explorations). That said, it's probably silly to continue attacking the idea of the moon as a jumping off base for Mars, but I'll pile on anyway. by jumping off base, if you mean a place to assemble and launch a Mars mission, yeah, that's nuts. Regardless of the low escape velocity for a finished vehicle, what about the cumulative cost of all the escape velocities required to get materialssupplies, life support, etc. to the Moon for a base and assembly facility? All for a 240,000 head start on a 50 million-mile journey. I may have been wrong to do so, but I gave GWB a little more credit when he speaks in terms of using the Moon as a "jumping off point" in getting to Mars, and thought he meant it more along the lines of us dusting off the manned space travel cobwebs and tackling a modern-day Moon mission or two before we tried for Mars. That was how I interpreted the strategy of the Moon by 2014 and then Mars by 2030. Was I wrong?
  13. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) Even with Barry as President. He'll gather the world at the U.N. and we'll all sing KUMBAYA. 20 years is a lot of f***ing Kumbaya.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 10:37 AM) I'm not convinced Obama is winning FL. No, it will definitely be a tough race. But, with McCain, Crist, Martinez, and W all coming out just this last week in favor of lifting the offshore oil drilling moratorium, I think Obama is going to pick up some more bipartisan support. For 20+ years, Florida support for continuing to ban coastal drilling has been refreshingly non-partisan, and this flipflop by McCain and Coppertone is going to hurt the GOP in Florida in November.
  15. QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) I believe he was referencing the fact that the Cubs have played the Pirates something like 9 times already this year. Either way.. like someone said, nothing like playing Kansas City or Pittsburgh to right a ship. Yeah, it's true that the Cubs have taken advantage of the weak teams they have played a bunch of times so far. It was frustrating last week when we couldn't do the same, but hopefully that is changing.
  16. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 06:36 AM) So this is what its like playing Pittsburgh.... It's never a time to be cocky with the hot and cold bats of this team. Rox should have been a cakewalk as well. Now, let's see them take the next two and I'll feel a little more upbeat going into the weekend – especially of TB can take at least oen more from the northsiders.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 11:04 PM) Not a fan. I agree, Leguizamo is great as Violator, but the guy who played Spawn was really bad. Plus, the body makeup was way too stiff. Spawn is a tall imposing figure in the comics, especially with his mask and chains, a tall actor should play the part. I think the parts taking place in Hell were just bad CGI, all of the creatures are the same guy just cloned and put all over the screen. I heard rumors of a remake. Hopefully it gets a decent budget and they can do something with it. Yeah, that's a fair assessment. It was an uneven film, and the hell CGI was bad, even by 1997 standards. I think my soft spot for it comes from being a big fan of the source material and vintage McFarlane in general combined with the fact that the comic book film adaptations coming out then were mostly really bad. By comparison, even a mediocre film like Spawn seemed pretty good.
  18. I gotta at least hand it to McCain, it took him a couple of years to flipflop on lifting the coastal oil drilling moratorium. Florida Governor Charlie Coppertone Crist, on the other hand, took exactly onw week to do his Big Flip for Big Energy. Somebody really wants to get the GOP VP nod. He's an abysmal governor, and as veep he'd make Dan Quayle look like a genius.
  19. A number of revelations have come out of the Senate investigation, and unfortunately the MSM is not going to pick up any of them. As damning as the evidence of a premeditated strategy to hide worked over detainees from the Red Cross should be, so too should the uncovering of the fact that torture was a top-down strategy and not the work of a couple of bad apple enlistees as the Pentagon wanted the public to believe. But none of this will get any significant media play and at the end of the day it won't matter. Because America is better than its enemies (except that it isn't), and America doesn't torture (except that it does). The damage this administration has done to our standing in the world is going to take 20 years to undo.

No love whatsoever for the Spawn movie?? I thought they did a decent job with it, and I liked Leguezamo (sp?) as Violator.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 07:54 AM) her value did not bring the net value of the movie into the positive. Her acting and the movie was so bad that she became less hot in my eyes. Hellboy and Blade are much better than F4 ever was or ever will be. I think any one of the Superman movies (with the exception of the horrid Superman all about Nuclear responsibility) are better than F4 and F4 ROTSS I hated the first FF film so much that I have so far avoided seeing FF2 because the Surfer is probably my all-time favorite Marvel character and I don't want to see how badly they massacred him. Next to the 2005 crapfest, the 1994 Oley Sassone/Roger Corman never officially released version looks like a masterpiece. Hellboy II looks like it's going to be really good based on the trailer.
  22. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 06:46 PM) Always loved Stan and his work. The guy is responsible for so many classic modern monsters. http://www.variety.com/VR1117987531.html I know he had been sick for a while, but that is very sad to hear. Definitely a brilliant monster man.
