QUOTE (Texsox @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) I went with :30 sitcoms and keeping it to 20 was tough. Shows like Simpsons, Happy Days, Coach, WKRP, Jeffersons, Dick Van Dyke, Soap, did not make my Top 20. You couldn't bring yourself to bump "That's My Mama" and "Joanie Loves Chachi," eh?

What about troupe sketch comedy (SNL, MAD TV, Fridays, Kids in the Hall) and/or anthology comedy (Monty Python, Benny Hill, Dave Allen, etc.)?? As far as cultural significance SNL has to be way up there, even if it sucked ass for extended periods during its long history.

Is the White House Daily Press Briefing considered a comedy series? If so, it should be way up on the list.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 11:40 AM) I also really doubt its a nation full of people who hate the west. I'd have to guess that there is a lot of both, probably the younger generation being more open to what Western culture brings them, and the older generations more anti-American. Well, once we start bombing them at least we'll be able to unite those two camps in their anti-American sentiments. -
QUOTE (SpringfieldFan @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) Turkish Coffee hmm, might have to try this... That is cool info, thanks. I remembered there being quite a bit to the technique, but I never realized it was originally cooked on hot desert sand. The proprietor of a favorite Labaneese restaurant of mine makes absolutely wonderful Turkish coffee. He takes ages making it in a little pot like that, and it's well worth it.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 09:36 AM) This is sad, but I thought he was already dead. RIP. Heaven's band just got better. Until Bo gets a hold of Buddy Holly and kicks his ass for stealing his riff.

Man, I read the thread title and thought MMA must be some dread disease she was fighting, then clicked the link and figured it out.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 28, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) This is crazy (starts at 5:30)!!! Anyone know if this is legit? Sure, Palast is legit, and a good investigative journalist. The problem is, the things he digs up are never covered by the MSM. I wonder why. No, not really. Palast was one of the first people to figure out what was going on with ChoicePoint and the rigging of the 2000 election, and as you saw in the video he was the one who did the demographic math to figure out that Kerry only lost in 2004 because of the massively disproportional spoilage of minority (=Democratic) votes. He first broke the story about the Rove emails and the caging scheme for 2008 more than a year ago, and you can see how much traction it has got.

A pioneer for sure. I always got a kick out of how cheesed off he would get not just at the industry for screwing him over, but at everybody else who came along after him and threw some Bo Diddly vamp into their music. Buddy Holly, the Stones, etc., he'd always chew 'em out for stealing his vamp. One of a kind.

Big Birthday Tidings, PA! As far as the keeping your wife unpregnant thing. . . just do what I do with my wife and piss her off all the time and then it sort of takes care of itself. And then the only thing left for me to do is take care of myself. . .

QUOTE (SpringfieldFan @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) Isn't Turkish coffee that coffee that has a whole lot of strength and a whole lot of sugar? Yes on the strength, but sugar is optional, eg, versus Cuban coffee in which it is integral in the preparation of the drink. The biggest distinction between Turkish cofee and other strong espresso coffees is that the ground roast beans are boiled directly in a pot of water, rather than using pressure to force the water through a bed of espresso grind. That means there will be a lot of coffee dregs that need to settle out - some in the pot and the rest in the cup. The grind for Turkish is also extremely fine – moreso than with typical espresso.

throwing my own $0.02 in. . . There already is an established and eagerly anticipated Soxtalk hot chicks contest that has evolved its own round-robin type elimination structure. Doing the same thing as a compilation of submitted lists, imo, won't be as compelling. Just my thoughts. Go Beer!

QUOTE (Texsox @ May 30, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Since the category said artist, I would assume that groups would be out. That would be stupid, and I'm sure it wasn't what ListMaster knightee knight had in mind.

Unbelievable. For anybody but them, that is. -
QUOTE (Felix @ May 29, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) Musical artist or TV Cartoon. Spoiler alert: If its musical artist, I'm totally putting Zappa on top, and if its a cartoon, Futurama ftw! Piffle, I'm putting Zappa top 1-9, and letting the Beatles slip in at number 10.

What are you hoping for in the Rays series?

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 29, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) TB was the last team I cared about playing when the schedule came out. There are a lot of sox fans out there....REPRESENT!! Will do. The White Sox fans just about equal the Rays fans in the stands when we are in town, and we definitely take over Ferg's, the bar around the corner from Tropicana. -

I'll take a split but I want 3 of 4. I'll be at the Friday game for sure and possibly Saturday as well if I can talk the kids into anothr game instead of Busch Gardens. A losing proposition, I know. -
QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 29, 2008 -> 03:37 PM) From the AP: First it was the film and the book. Now the next stop for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is opera. La Scala officials say the Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been commissioned to produce an opera on the international multiformat hit for the 2011 season at the Milan opera house. The composer is currently artistic director of the Arena in Verona. Not the sort of subject matter you'd think would make good opera, no. But Battistelli does odd stuff, including a black comedy opera called The Embalmer about the alcoholic Russian embalmer in charge of keep Lenin's embalmed body on display, and a series of operas based on encyclopedia entries.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 29, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) but no woman should be given a free pass to beat on a man just because she's a woman. A man has the right to defend himself. That's the kind of advice Chuck Finley could have used a few years ago.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 29, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) Obama's version of the Pope: at least he doesn't wear a funny hat It's the funny hat that makes the man.
-
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ May 29, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) Since Bill Maher is a liberal, is it fair to apply his thoughts on Christianity to Obama and say he is a member of a cult that promotes pedophilia and he is under the control of a Nazi Pope? It would be more fair to do so if Obama was actually Roman Catholic. The excerpt you posted had Maher specifically targeting Roman Catholics and not broader christianity. Obama's church is part of United Church of Christ, so the Pope has no authority there whether he's a Nazi or not.

QUOTE (Mplssoxfan @ May 29, 2008 -> 10:21 AM) Can we have a Godwin's Law guideline in here? I want to edit this to say that I'm not singling Knightini out. I'm just a little weary of how quickly some things degenerate to Nazi/Hitler comparisons that are approximately 99% unwarranted. Godd*mn, Mplssoxfan, what makes you think you can come in here and tell us what to do? It's like you're the damn Gestapo or something. . . sheesh.
