QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) The eye passed over an "uninhabited by human" area of South Padre Island. They are waiting to mark land fall until it hits the mainland. Looks like Arroyo City will be smacked soon. How had the turtle nesting season been going down there this year? Pretty much every nest that hadn't hatched out by now is toast. We lost an enormous number of nests in a better than average nesting season with the 2004 and 2005 storms.

Sending good thoughts your way. For as cool a natural phenomenon as they are hurricanes are a real pain in the ass when they take a bead on you. When I saw this one was going to be named Dolly and saw it heading into the Gulf, I thought it would be heading to New Orleans just based on the Louis Armstrong name karma alone. Glad to see that is not the case, but unfortunately someone's miss is always someone else's storm path. Take care of yourself and your staff and boys, Tex.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) I remember it as Nick & Vito's, too. It was accross the parking lot from Groucho's. I don't know if I ever ate it, though. We always got Angie's (which was about a block down on the other side of the street. We called it Nick and Vito's too, but it was always signed as Vito and Nick's. I think it just flowed better the other way. It was always fun going as a kid because it was just down from Rosario's meats and we loved the hell out of that neon sign with the happy pigs jumping into the meat grinder and coming out happy little sausages. And whoever said they didn't like Vito and Nick's pie obviously just doesn't care for real Chicago cracker crust pizza, because that's about as authentic as it gets regardless of who your favorite is.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 21, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) I can't remember the names of two places that really stood out. One is an place that has been there since like the early 1900's I believe. It has something like 12 different dining areas. If you go when it's not busy, they will give you a tour of every room and tell you stories about Presidents and famous people who have dined in each one. Cusine+service+history=amazing. The other was a very casual place right on Bourbon St. that had a huge balcony. Great cuisine that had me racing for the men's room before when even left......so I ate again. Oh and the Hurricanes. I got back to the hotel at 4 am one morning and passed out, slept til like 11 am, got up to take a leak, stood over the toilet and STILL had the spins. Went back to bed for another 3 hours. Never had another Hurricane since. That first place sounds like maybe either Commander's Palace on St. Charles in the garden District, which was built in 1880, or maybe Dooky Chase's on Orleans. Lots of great old places though, so maybe one of the Brennan family places. I would be 400 pounds if I lived in Nawlins. Best food on the planet.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) I personally don't think the T series has gone downhill as dramatically as Batman did. After the first Terminator, which was great, the second one was (I thought) pretty decent. Went off the timeline a bit, and the ending was a little long, but it was OK. And I thought T3 was actually a good movie - underrated, in fact. So I don't think there is much rescuing to do. The Terminator series, to me, is more like the Alien Trilogy (there was no 4 - ignore), where all three were good films, but with very different takes on the concept. In Alien, you had a sci fi movie, an action movie, and a drama. With Terminator, you had sci fi / punk, then CGI-heavy action, then the third one that I can't quite put a good adjective on. Judging by the teaser, T4 looks like yet another take. I agree the Terminator franchise held up much better than the Batman franchise did, and about forgetting Alien 4 ever came out. I think Alien III could have been such a cool film, and it just didn't get there, but the first two films were so epic it's hard to always hit that level.

Baines statue to be unveiled at the Cell on Sunday

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 08:14 AM) Is it the same statue that is being displayed in the first base coach's box during the home half of every inning at USCF? He's here through Thursday, folks. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 12:42 PM) Been watching the last 3 seasons of "Weeds". What a great show. Halfway through season 3 right now. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 06:06 PM) Weeds is simply awesome. Best show on teevee right now, hands down. And if Mary-Louise Parker isn't the definition of what you youngins refer to as a MILF then there's something not quite right. 4th season has been lots of fun so far with some interesting twists. I won't give anything away.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 07:20 PM) I'm going to the Sunday Matinee...because I'm what you'd call a 'starving college student'. Peanut butter and crackers for dinner tonight, wooo! What? Tired of ramen noodles with a cracked egg mixed in?

FlaSoxJim, in the best of all possible worlds, would have been shorthand for "Florida Sox Jim" Alas, on the mlb Sox site back in 2000 when I tried to register, it turned out FlaSoxJim was already taken by someone (never once saw him actually post though). Hence, the redundant 'x' in FlaSoxxJim.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) In other words...you might well get an opening day first pitch from the President at the Cell if the person I'm voting for wins. Like I told you before , voting for Southpaw the Mascot is just throwing your vote away, dude. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) If I found out that the President knew who I was, that would be one of the coolest feelings in the world. What makes you think he doesn't.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) but as i said earlier...palermos on 95th just west of cicero...for thin crust, nothing is better, especially if you like your sauce sweet They are good. Baracco's (sp?) on 95th also does a decent thin pie. Not my favorite, but certainly serviceable and I'd eat a whole one by myself right now.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) For real, the fact that drilling has become the number one issue to change gas prices goes to show we still don't have the correct mindset to become more energy secure. of course we don't. And this is all diversion, because it's much easier to make a token act to lift a drilling ban and then wag a finger at Congress than it is to take proactive steps to ensure that reliance on a carbon economy isn't our undoing. Sure I realize it's easier said and done. But yesterday when I heard W sputter about how much better shape we'd be in if we commenced offshore and ANWR drilling seven years ago I got really incensed. I mean, just think how much better long-term shape we would be in if we'd have gotten serious (= funding the research) about alternate energy three presidencies ago.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) I met a dude in there named no-love who was telling me exactly what went down the night he was arrested. I guess he suspected for months that his wife was cheating but could never prove it. He set up one of those expensive ass hidden camera's in their bedroom to catch the his wife in the act. It worked. So he played it cool for a couple days. Didn't let her know that he knew. So a few days after that he decides that he's gonna let her know he knows what's up. Now she's thinking he's gonna be gone all night. But he comes home way early without telling her. Low and behold she's with the guy again gettin' it on in the bedroom. He busts in on them and he said the other guy almost started crying he was so scared. So he actually had mercy on him and let him go. After that he went and stuck his wife in the face. So after he tells me that I start laughing (No, I don't support woman abuse. No matter the case. So please Steff, have mercy on me). Anyway, one of the other inmates, thirsty, overheard me laughing. And he got in my face because I guess he thought I thought it was cool to hit a woman. He also mentioned that he had a father that used to beat his mother on a daily basis. So he's real sensitive when it comes to that. So before I can even defend myself, no-love steps in front of me and starts talking s*** to thirsty. And it got INTENSE. All kinds of cussing and such. And no-love was talkin' so loud and was so intense that he kinda spit on thirsty. So thirsty throws a punch, no-love throws one right back, and all hell broke loose. lol. And the officer wasn't in the room with us at the time. So they went at it for a good 3-5 minutes before it was broken up. Everynody was instigating and cheering the fight on. lol. I was kinda shocked. Anyway, they both got their own little seperate cells. I never saw either of them after that. Cute. You had inmates fighting over you. Glad to hear you're out and no worse for the wear.

QUOTE (BurlyMan56 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) Vito n Nicks on 83rd and Pulaski :headbang sooo good. I'm craving it right now, sausage and mushroom. They just did two days of taping this month at Vito and Nicks for an upcoming episode of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" show. They spotlighted White Palace a few months back, another Chicago food joint I mis dearly.

QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) I'm going to St. Petersburg next week for vacation with the girlfriend. We'll be hitting up the beaches, go to a Ray's game, check out Tampa, and even a booze cruise, whoo hoo. It seems like tailgating is not allowed at Ray's games, which sucks. Anyone know of any good spots around Tropicana Field where we can grab a few beers before the game? Also, any recommendations on restaurants or bars (not clubs) to check out in St. Pete? What else is cool to do there? Thanks guys. Ferg's is a good stumbling-distance sports bar, just across the parking lot and over the train tracks from the Trop. Sox fans usually pack the place when the Sox roll through, and they have a lot of covered outdoor area, pool tables, decent bar food, etc. Perfect pre/post game spot. Here it is. The Dali museum is great and the Pier complex is fun. Mostly though, people from St. Pete drive over the causeway to Tampa for fun. Head to Tampa and do Ybor City one night - good Cuban food, lots of bars, and a very good brew pub. Have fun.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 15, 2008 -> 04:16 PM) The government bailout won't fix anything. There will still be the same financial issues, just now they will only add to national debt. A completely out of control debt. The weak economy has a lot to do with this debt, the bailout will only intensify problems. I guess my question is, if the feds just let the nation's financial institutions fail like they probably deserve, would 2009 start to look a lot like 1929?
