  1. Re, the bit about "having a harmonic voice", try to find that story for me if you can, because it is interesting. If the story said he is capable of harmonic singing (which is how I'm interpreting what you wrote), that's talking about a kind of diphonic singing akin to what the Tibetan throat singers and xoomi singers do, where a high harmonic in the vocal is emphasized to the point that it sounds distinct from the low vocal harmonic. Besides for that i don't know what it means to "have a harmonic voice" other than having a voice 9and ear) suited to singing harmony vocal parts. Anyway, as for Timberlake, he was responsible for two of the best SNL performances in recent memory and he's undeniably talented, so I'll cut him a break.

QUOTE(CubKilla @ Sep 3, 2007 -> 03:48 PM) On an end note, if you try and like Dogfish Head's 60 and 90 Minute IPA's, try Three Floyd's Alpha King and Dreadnaught. We don't see Three Floyd's come down this way, so it is a treat when I get back to the Midwest and can enjoy it. Alpha King, Dreadnaught IPA and the very tasty Robert the Bruce Scottish Ale are the only things I think I've had of theirs, so it looks like I have some catching up to do.
  5. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 3, 2007 -> 01:16 PM) This kind of thread is just sad. Maybe SoxTalk can sell computer breathalyzer attachments that block us from posting when we're too drunk?

    Micro Brews

QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 2, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) I've found that beer snobs are the best kind of snobs because they don't just want to ridicule you for lack of knowledge but want to introduce you to as much as possible and help you learn. All in the hope that when we go over to somebody's house they have been sufficiently educated and have some good beer on hand!

    Micro Brews

QUOTE(G&T @ Sep 1, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) So I'm watching the Sox which means I've been drinking. Tonight my beer has been from Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY, and called Hennepin. It's a saison beer (basically hefeweizen). Anyway, what's out there? I want to try new beer. I know there's a thread like this somewhere but I'm wondering what good beer drinkers are having. Ommegang makes outstanding Belgian-style beers. In my opinion, they are second only to Unibroue (though I wish they would do some low-strength brews) and Allagash as premiere North American Belgian-style brewers. Hennepin, and saison in general, can't be equated with Bavarian hefeweizen, however, except in maybe very broad terms of palate and mouthfeel. [i'm hoping to come off as informative here, and not as a beer prick, so forgive me if I fail]. I've read articles where both Ommegang owner Don Feinberg and head brewer Randy Thiel talk in general terms about The Hennepin recipe, and neither of them have suggested that there is wheat anywhere in the grain bill (They do note the inclusion of ginger root and cane sugar, so the discussions, I think, would have noted the use of wheat if it occurred). Inclusion of wheat in general would be unusual for saison/beirre de garde, but of course it's not unheard of. Historically, both of these styles are farmhouse ales (one is Wallonian and one is French), so if the farm produced wheat certainly it could end up in the grain bill of the beers they produce. Being farmhouse ales however, in no case would the wheat have been malted. It would have been unmalted wheat just as what is used in the other famous farmhouse ale, Belgian wit (Ommegang makes an excellent one of these, by the way). by definition, the wheat used in the grain bills of the Bavarian weissbiers are malted. One more thought on modern interpretations of saison. Most of them – even the Belgian ones - are now brewed to a higher strength than the original versions would have been. farmhouse alse were beers of amazing utility. They used the ingredients and equipment on-hand, but they were also brewed for consumption by farmhands during the course of the working day (water was often contaminated and unreliable for drinking). Since farmhands were alloted 5 liters of ale a day, it had to be brewed to a low strength so as not to incapacitate the laborers. These probably would hev been in the 3% range. Most modern interpretations are now in the 6-8% range, and even Saison Dupont (which most people consider to be the premiere example of the style - seek it out) comes in at 5%. I love big beers, certainly. But I also love the historic utility beers and British session beers that focused on flavor rather than strength and were meant to be consumed all day/night without knocking the drinker on his arse. OK, sorry for the excursion. The micro I'm currently still in love with is Dogfish Head out of Deleware. If you are a hop-head, you'll go nuts for these. Their year-round 90 Minute IPA is my favorite year-round big beer available today and the occasional (three releases a year) 120 Minute IPA (12% abv and a whopping 120 ibu hopping rate) is unbelievable. i've been less impressed with some of the artisinal seasonal stuff (Raison D'Extra, Immort Ale), but it's still worth a spin.

Cool, I will have to check that out. I didn't even know he had been killed until a few years after it happened. Hit by a car right?

  14. QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) All I want to add is, stop poking fun at religous beliefs of others. You can't be sure if it offends people or not. Just as we don't poke fun at race, sexuality ect. religion should be off limits too(all religions, not just christianity). I don't see how it is any different than racism and one who is prejudiced towards gays. If this is directed at both BlackSox and myself, then it's a fair cop. When he threw the stone with the first post I took the same derisive tone in my followup.
  15. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) How was it not respectfully offered? You're joking, right? The person in that link offends most of mainstream Christendom calling most people "false prophets", accusing them of faking their call to ministry, etc., and suggesting that if you are not a millitant evangelical than you don't get it and you're "not doing the right thing." He's openly mocking the way most Christians live. BlackSox, whom I have zero qualms with beyond the tone of this post posts this derisive/divisive/dismissive piece and asks Christian Soxtalkers to wake up. That is condescending and presumptuous and lacking any respect for the beliefs and feelings of mainstream Christians. BlackSox urges Christian Soxtalkers to view the video with an open mind, but Tom Richards seems about as close-minded as you can get. Just losing the "wake up" comment would have gone a long way in the respect department. I'm not a Christian. The songs I posted as follow-ups take a stab at the foibles of a couple of religioso subsegments - the televangelists who live in mansions and wear $1000-dollar suits and live high on the hog off the Jeez-O-Bucks they bilk out of old ladies, and those who can't leave it at "Love God, Love Your Neighbor and Do What You Will" when it comes to their brand of Christianity. If I offended you by slighting the millionaire televangelists and those who would allow their beliefs to impinge on the beliefs and freedom of belief of others, then bu all means, you are welcome to defend them and their ilk here. Back atcha'. And to BlackSox and RangerCal. I simply view the post and accompanying video that started this thread as being belligerent in its militant evangelism and dismissiveness toward Christians whose flavor of Christianity is beneath contempt for Tom Richards, whoever the hell he is.
  16. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 09:05 AM) Nah, instead of that birthday cake, GWB should have played God and veered the hurricane away from N.O. ... but since he's so f***ing evil, he decided to let it hit N.O. and created the grand conspiracy known as project Failure FEMA... because he hates poor, African Americans. He KNEW Katrina was going to hit and that 1,700 people would lose their lives, but he LET IT HAPPEN ON HIS WATCH! DAMN HIM!. Still in all, I'd have at least thought he'd have risen to the occasion for a big Bullhorn Moment. That's about the extent of his worth in these situations.

  19. QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 12:42 AM) Hey Jim, for a senior citizen, you sure don't act your age. If blacksox8 posts a thread titled "Fear God" that should be a hint to you that it might not be your type of thread. Now, had he posted a thread titled "Does God Exist?" , that might be the greenlight for you to jump in and debate. Oh wait, again, that wasn't even debating, you were mocking his beliefs in a thread he started. Big Man, Jim. I don't think he posted the vid to get mocked. Like all other soxtalk threads, Stick with the thread title if you want to take part. Otherwise, get your own thread. I really would expect a lot more from someone who has been here as long as you. And no, I will not turn this into a 28 page debate with you like a lot of other filibuster threads. This is not a debate, it's really a respect issue. And my thinking was that this should have been a Filibustered post. The initial post was not respectfully offered, and so yes I agree it is a respect issue. The post was a thrown down gauntlet to "wake up" by another poster who has also been around long enough to know where the divisive stuff belongs.
