QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) Better late than never... Happy Birthday!!! Ditto! Happy belated B-Day!

QUOTE(winodj @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) I have a friend who is so broke that he told me yesterday he didn't have any money to eat for the next two weeks and had no food. I've been there and it is rough. It's a sobering thought to think so many of us are just an injury/illness or lay-off from being in that same boat. I wish your friend the best. I can tell him first hand from my leanest days that a 10-lb bag of potatoes (did I just muff that spelling Quayle-style?) can keep a college student alive for a week.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) The Great wall of China is neither continuous, visible from space, nor built within one dynasty... discuss. The viewable from space thing is an absolute myth. It's more than long enough, but not nearly wide enough to be seen from space. And yes, three distinct dynasties contributed to its construction. In fact, during its initial construction, three distinct Chinese states independently built walls that were later connected to become part of a unified Great Wall. as far as the discontinuity, I assume most of the rubbled and missing sections were there at one time but I don't know. I've always liked the personification of the Great Wall as a huge dragon snaking across China, with its tail up in the ast and its head driking from the sea in the west. Absolutely the Great Wall remains high on my must see life list.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:40 AM) So random. Can anyone recommend a good electric shaver? One that's fast, doesn't nick your skin and shaves as close as a blade. I think that's impossible, but I haven't had one in like 20 years. I imagine maybe there are some really good ones out there now. I also think the "close as a blade" claims made by some companies is also bunk, but I've been a convert to electric shavers for the last 3+ years. They are a lot better than they used to be. I really like the Norelco Advantage shaver I have. It's one of the units that takes the cartridge of Nivea skin lotion so when you press a button it pumps a little lotion to stand your beard up and lubricate the blades as theu cut. Pretty pricey at $80 or so I think, and you have to replace the blades every 6 months or so, but I've had the same one since Christmas 2001.

Having spent so much time on the Hendrix tangent in the American supergroup thread, I figure we should follow up with this item. I've not read any of the Hendrix bios of the last 10 years or so, but I read just about everything prior to that. The official story about Jimi getting discharged from the 101st Airborne because he broke his ankle in a jump is the one that had always been reported in those books. I had not heard this take on it before. The books author seems somewhat sensationalist in claming Jimi pretended to be gay to "avoid 'Nam" even if that may have been the end result. This was 1962, which was in the very early days of our involvement and well before most of the callups of enlisted soldiers. But if Jimi's tour of duty would have had him in through 1964 then I guess the author's claim is a fair one. Then again, it is known that Jimi had not planned to be a soldier, and enlisted to avoid jail time after being nicked in a series of youthfull indescretions involving stolen cars, etc. So, coming up with a ploy to get discharged after a year is certainly a reasonable assertion. Jimi wrestled with demons a lot larger that this, but I guess most of that history is already well known. I might have to check this book out. http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=996912

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) We ordered our wedding rings last night. Inspite of the fact that I have 2 diamonds and 2 emeralds on mine, his is $100 more than mine lol. :banghead The extra $100 is for the new built-in men's wedding ring dynamic Ever-Stuck® technology that makes the ring extra tight and impossible to slip off in the vicinity of strip clubs and singles bars.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 10:04 PM) Wasn't the original Steve also in an ep of Homicide: Life on the Streets and that is one of the reasons that Nickelodeon had to replace him because kids saw him in the adult show as well and weren't able to rectify the two as just him being an actor? And PS Jim...that is scary that you are able to name those characters...::shudders:: First of all, there is NO "original Steve." There is Steve and there is his younger brother Joe who is on the show now but is not some freak that always wears green striped shirts. Joe's striped shirts are orange. But yes, Steve was indead in an episode of Homicide, and when it ran my kids were still little and big into Blues' Clues so I did notice it. But I don't believe that's why he left the show. I think it had already been decided that he was moving on, and the fact that he still still gets a consulting producer credit on the show suggests he didn't leave on terrible terms. Wino, I'm not entirely sure about the arm tattoos. What I I heard is that Steve had to leave the show because he nearly died when his stomach exploded from eating Pop-Rocks and drinking Coke at the same time.

Huff and Baez would have been great acquisitions, but everybody who says neither is worth selling the farm for is exactly correct. You can't do much if nobody's selling.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) Allow me to nauseate you: Egbert, Thomas O'Mally, Dutchess, Toulousse (sp?), Marie, and Berleoise (sp?). Those are the characters in that photo. I did that without looking it up. That's what happens to your brain when you spend too much time with a 5 and 7 year old.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 02:53 PM) I say let Pluto be a planet, even though many think it shouldn't, it's been a planet for a while now. Plus it has it's own moon, that's enough for me. Theer is a lot of sentimentality attached to Pluto, yeah. And if it were, uhm, de-planetized, then what would happen to My Very Erstwhile Mother...? woud she Just Serve Us Nine... nothing. Maybe they'd change it to Noodles? But there is not scientifically a lot goinf for Pluto to stay a planet. It's moon Charon is relatively larger to it's parent planet than any other moon in the solar system. And there are at least 8 other moons in the solar system (including our own) that are bigger than Pluto. Given Pluto's eliptical orbit (recall it was actually 8th closest to teh sun for about 20 years until recently, and the fact that it has a rock-ice composition strongly suggests it's the largest yet known Kuiper Belt Object (of which there are 10s of thousands). All the other distant planets of our solar system planets are gas giants, so we certainly know that Pluto's genesis is not the same as those Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. But I agree, it will be sad on a popular culture level to strip teh designation from Pluto, even if it is just a big burned out asteroid. Rock on, Tiny Pluto!

I had some really spicy panang curry from a great Thai place last night. This morning I am reminded that often the most challenging aspects of Thai cuisine don't hit you until the next day.

It took my wife a little while to warm up to P and T's Bulls***, but now it's one of her favorite shows. so there's a slim chance I can talk her into seeing it or renting it when it makes video.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) YES! Just got my ticket! Thursday, September 29th, I'll be at Metro ( my favorite concert venue ) to see Bob play with a full band for the first time in years, and playing Husker Du and Sugar songs in concert for the first time in years. The new CD "Body Of Song" finds Bob playing and writing songs in his "signature style" once again, and that's great news for me! I'm excited to see good ol' Bob - I can't wait!!! I haven't seen Bob Mould play since around the time of Workbook, which is still an outstanding album. Should be a great show, especially mixing in the Sugar and Husker's stuff.

Interesting. I assumed it was going to be an updated story on Sedna, which is already under consideration as the putative 10th planet. But if the distance and, most importantly, the size of the new body is what they say it is then maybe we're looking at planets 10 and 11. Sedna is extimated at 8 billion miles away from the sun and only 3/4 the size of Pluto, as compared to 9 billion miles and 1-1.5 times as big. Also, Sedna is suposed to be red in color. Neither planetoid may ever get planet designation, of course. There are a good number of scientists who think Pluto should not be considereed a planet either. Possibly all of those distant ice masses are part of the Oort Cloud, which they still don't have a very good handle on either. Cool stuff.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 03:30 PM) I think you mean "a legend in his own MIND". Wasn't he supposed to desicrate somebodies soul not too long ago? I wonder how that turned out for him. We always just called him "Wingy". HE is to me what you folks are saying is Eddie. Wingy couldn't right a decent song to save his life. Alcatrazz actually became a decent band after he left, and they replaced him with that guy Vai. I hope you noted that I called him "Wrongway" Malmsteen earlier. I did that specifically for you. Curiously, there is one metal guitar wanker that I found to be pretty melodic in his better stuff, and that was Uli John Roth. I pretty much hated the Scorpions stuff, but when I heard the Electric Sun stuff when it came out I couldn't believe it was the ex-Scorpions guitarist doing such cool stuff. To bring this thread full circle, UJR ended up marrying Monika Dannemann, who earlier was Jimi Hendrix girlfriend - the one that found him unconscious in bed and called the ambulance on the night he died.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 03:01 PM) Bruce and his gang were mentioned, but you can also add to it that you think they belong. Hard to deny it. Not a fan (is everybody getting the idea that I am a pain in the ass with the popular stuff?), but again...have to take my hat off to the man and his troup. I'm trying to be whimsical here, but believe it or not, that is a REAL tough one to run with. Milton Burle probably had a tough time running with it too. Just be thankful there are things you don't know about Uncle Milty.
