  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) Nevermind... I thought this was the comment about us invading Pakistan that Obama started saying. Never seemed to hurt the White House's current resident.
  2. What's spinning about the fact that the President has threatened to veto any spending bill that comes to his desk that doesn't exactly state the terms he left in his budget?

  4. Today the House Democrats voted a bill through that would guarantee our military a guaranteed home leave rest period equal to their tour of duty in a combat theater. Currently, in Iraq, the average US soldier is given a 15 month term. They are then given only 12 months home leave service time. A change that was made within the last two years IIRC. With the new bill, the terms would equalize at 15 months. With the national guard, the home leave service time would be triple. (IE National Guard troops would see 15 months of service followed by 45 months of home leave service). This would force the military into one of two options. 1. Increase overall military size, 2. Reduce troop presence in Iraq. The president has threatened to veto this measure. The president has also threatened to veto a defense spending budget bill for the next fiscal year that would give military men and women a roughly 3.5% pay increase for the next year. (Because it's not the exact same budget he submitted to Congress.) Just thought you should know...
  5. I was at this game. Damn. This game was painful to watch. It was nice to see us never be behind, but I was pretty convinced that after that 16 run second inning we were done for. Nice to see us pull out the win.
  6. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 07:09 PM) Hypothetical. Rex, you're a swell guy. Balta, you're a real jackass. (now I'll be the fall guy... ) Kap, you're a swell jackass. All three have different meanings but by word association things can be taken differently. I've read several times today that you all are trying to say the Bush Administration said that Iraq had to do with 9/11. On a strict interpretation, no, that was NEVER said. Was it inferred? It was, if and only if, you then say Al Queda was involved in Iraq. Or another sentance construction: Iraq = Al Queda 9/11 = Al Queda You all are trying to say that BushCo said therefore, 9/11 = Iraq, and that was never said. Only the first two elements were said, and that does not mean Iraq = 9/11 like you all keep saying it does. Holy s***, it's reading. NOT INFERRING, READING. You're right. Never did they explicitly say Iraq was responsible for 9/11. However, the administration on several occasions said that lead hijacker Mohammed Atta met with senior Iraqi officials in Prague in April 2001. What other reason would he have to visit Iraq if not for material support for 9/11? They consistently equated 9/11 with Al Qaida. They consistently equated Al Qaida to Saddam. It's really easy to make that leap of faith. You're defending the same things that you criticize Clinton for having done - not tell the whole truth. It's shady as s*** and although Bush may not have explicitly said Iraq did 9/11, they most definitely did as much as they could to keep that idea alive.
  7. BP has been pouring a lot of crap in Lake Michigan a lot longer than since 2001. And, beyond that, the state approved it too. The truth is that a Clinton led EPA probably would have allowed this too, because the EPA is entirely too weak an organization to do its job effectively.
  8. The sports reporter is apologizing for being right. If Vick had been charged with rape, this wouldn't be as big a deal at all. Not much happened to Kobe after all.
  9. Vice President Dick Cheney 9/14/03 on an Saddam-9/11 link Vice President Dick Cheney 12/9/01 on a Saddam-9/11 link Vice President Dick Cheney 3/24/02 on a Saddam-9/11 link President George Bush on 5/1/03 President George Bush on 1/9/03 President George Bush on 1/28/03 Condoleeza Rice, September 2003 I don't know how anyone could have ever thought this administration was distorting a link between 9/11 and Saddam either. It seems so clear to me.
  10. I gotta say though, that album is freaking amazing. There are songs that are direct musical covers with new melodies and lyrics written over them. I've never heard anything quite like "Tears Dry On Their Own."
  11. The only good news to that news about the Sunnis is that the Parliament is on a one month vacation. So there's plenty of time for them to change their minds.
  12. I live in a town of 15,000 people - Asbury Park. We currently have one building in our skyline. The Asbury Tower built in the early 1970s and consists of Senior Housing. It's 27 stories tall and was the tallest building on the New Jersey Shore until casinos were built in Atlantic City. It is the tallest building between AC and NYC. It will soon be joined by a number of other taller buildings. All condo buildings and all blight. The only vaguely interesting building is the Esperanza. Here's what it will look like I would love to have more interesting stuff to look at in my day to day view. Instead we get ten to fifteen story uninspired condo blight.

  14. Actually Kap, exactly what has stopped the administration from making this a success? They've had every tool and dollar they've wanted available to them.
  15. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 07:51 PM) Grand Hyatt is correct. got a sweet deal with mlb. It's adjacent to Grand Central Station. got a huge lobby. It's where the Sox were staying on 9-11 That lobby is a great place to hang if you have to wait a while for your train.
  16. He'll split the conservative vote between Thompson, maybe Duncan Hunter and himself.
  17. Newt Gingrich ensures a conservative would not get the nomination in 2008.
  18. I've grown to grudgingly respect Pearl Jam. I just felt that Eddie Vedder was so grating and the perceived '"social importance" of Jeremy in my high school really got on my nerves. Couple that with Vedder's poor man's Neil Young impression was getting super annoying. However, since No Code, I've started to respect them actually. Something that kind of scared me. Almost as much as when I discovered I actually liked Hole's Celebrity Skin album.
  19. Here's an aside. How much positive news could there be? The standard of living for most Iraqis is not getting better? The amount of electricity that the average Iraqi had is not just down since Saddam left power, its down since the beginning of the year. So much so that the US government won't report those figures anymore. The star of the Iraqi national Soccer team has asked for refuge in another country because he fears for his life in Iraq. Iraqi refugees make up double digit percentages of the population in Syria and Jordan. The Iraqi government still hasn't passed any legislation that might lead to peace in the region, like issues regarding oil revenue sharing. And they just took another one month vacation without acheiving any of the benchmarks that we've asked them to tackle. Even if the violence cuts by half between now and September, how is it acceptable for us to sit there and prop up a failed state?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 12:22 PM) So, I will also add, the Simpsons movie was better than I expected. The wife loved it, I thought it rated in at very good. Pleasantly surprised. I agree and hearing Marge swear was great!
