  1. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ May 14, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) Looks like Howard Dean and the DNC are being sued for discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Guess they didn't feel like being inclusive. Or keeping campaign promises. http://www.courthousenews.com/HitchDNC.pdf I read that brief. Nobody really looks good in this. It sounds like people in the DNC are not the best at handling situations, it sounds like he doesn't understand the concept of what a political outreach coordinator does.
  2. Rahm Emmanuel is a douchebag.
  3. Depending on the state you're in, gas stations are required to price at a minimum or a maximum. I can tell you that in Michigan, it is common for stations to sell gas at a one or two cent per gallon loss. In New Jersey, they can not price the gas below their cost and they are only allowed to change prices once in a 24 hour time frame.
  4. I'm no fan of the Hillary camp. And yeah, they're pretty dirty. Obama seemed to run a pretty clean campaign three years ago, but then again - he didn't have to do a lot of mudslinging with his opponents being as ridiculous as they were - both of them. I'm sure he's found plenty of friends to sleaze it up over time. Truth is, there is going to be a big problem with these primaries. The DC apparatus is still very much run by a bunch of Bob Shrums. The people responsible for most successful campaigns of McGovern, Carter, Mondale and Dukakis. They aren't fans of people like John Edwards and not so hot on Obama. They may be able to swing enough votes in the party to let someone like Hillary sail through to the nomination - but not enough to actually allow a victory in November of an election year. It's quite sad really.
  5. Tough time keeping track of administration/GOP scandals? http://www.slate.com/id/2165783/nav/tap1/ Slate is there to help!
  6. After just coming back from San Francisco, there is something disturbing about hearing the words "Castro" and "artificial anus" together.
  7. Ah. Okay. I guess we'd know for sure if he flew from the states on a charter or flew out of Canada to get there. Flights don't get to leave for Havana without special clearance from here.
  8. I thought that it was stated that Moore went under a journalist license since what he makes is technically a documentary.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 13, 2007 -> 12:48 AM) Now this is just sad. "I'm sorry, I only hate gay people when I have to pee." I wonder, if Thompson keeps this up, if he can move into Gravel territory. I think he's already there.
  10. QUOTE(jheath160 @ May 10, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) Following a long, hard local mayoral campaign, I was disappointed that my candidate did not win, and am now starting to rethink my party affiliation. So, educate me...why should I stay a Dem, rather than move over to the Republican side? In my opinion, party affiliation matters more the higher up you get. On a city level, party affiliation means little - especially in the city that you live in. On a national level, I honestly don't understand why a lot of people affiliate the way they do. Where do you fall on the side of issues nationally? That's where your party affiliation really matters.
  11. QUOTE(kapkomet @ May 8, 2007 -> 08:25 AM) And they all pretty much had to leave or be pushed out for their beliefs. The republican party does the same thing, but it's not nearly as dramatic most of the time. Last time I checked Ben Nelson is still a Democrat serving in office. Zell Miller chose to endorse Bush in 2004 and then retired. Joe Lieberman ran in a Democratic primary and said that he'll run in the general regardless of whether or not he still has the support of his party. Nobody made anyone leave. Hell, Lieberman won because he had the tacit support of Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid.
  12. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ May 8, 2007 -> 02:48 PM) Where have I ripped him for trying to be green? I said I thought his request that the secret service drive green to be a stupid one for safety reasons. Sure they make hybrid SUV's, but if my safety was an issue, i don't care how many damn dionasaurs they have to burn up to get me outta there, just do it! Tex brought up the question, 'should the government be driving green?'. Well, sure, why not? When the current vehicles are due for replacement, green should be a big consideration. But if the currently do NOT have armored hybrid SUV's to guard Obama with, will he pay for it, or should the taxpayers foot a special expense because he wants to look good? Hell, if the DO have armored hybrid SUV's, are they as good as the non-hybrid ones? Can they go as fast as they may need to with all that extra weight? Are they as safe? Actually hybrid cars have quite good acceleration and performance on average. In some cases, better than regular cars. Note that Obama actually referred to FlexFuel vehicles - like cars that can run on E85, for example.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2007 -> 11:51 AM) Its funny that you only read stuff about Republicians crossing the aisle, and that they are also the only ones who are willing to do the same in votes, and to critisize their own party, but they are the ones who are stubborn. How quickly you forget Zell Miller. Ben Nelson. Hell, Joe Lieberman left the party after he couldn't win a primary.
  14. They do make hybrid SUVs by the way. Obama has been attracting crowds upwards of 20,000 in some cases. Hillary isn't even getting that big a crowd at the moment - so its probably warranted in Barack's case.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 7, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) Honestly, so do I. Because I think it'd be a great thing for these gigantic media conglomerates to realize that there's a huge potential cost to putting people like this on the airwaves. ^^ Don't just punish the DJ for being the ass. Punish the corporations who encourage the asshattery in the first place.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2007 -> 08:22 AM) So I take it you'd have no problem having something like a Waste Transfer station located next to your home? Last time I checked, I don't live in a bar.
  17. I'd just like to point out that since the first primary election isn't until January, that I refuse to pay any attention until the end of June.
  18. I'll be at the Thursday getaway game at Yankee Stadium 8/2. $5 tickets!
  19. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ May 5, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) USA Today is a poor excuse for a newspaper, and bias is the least of its worries. Its like a newspaper directed at 4th graders, with little or no substance, pretty graphics showing nonsensical statistics, and an eye-catching layout. So the newspaper version of Fox News then? *rimshot* QUOTE(kapkomet @ May 5, 2007 -> 03:25 PM) I get the Wall Street Journal, but it certainly isn't for the "conservative" news. Duh. It does have a VERY influential op/ed page and leans quite conservative.
  20. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Apr 29, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) I agree that talk radio is conservative-dominated. It was a medium written off by most people as useless until conservative shows took over. Sports talk also helped revive am and talk radio shows in general. But for network tv, conservative shows are extremely hard to find. And size-wise, Fox doesn't match the big 3. For 'cable news', yeah they are a big player. But does Joe Sixpack watch The Factor, or Nightline? And newspapers, how many conservative leaning papers are there, because there surely are some that lean so far the left you would think they would fall over. There's the Wall Street Journal - circulation 1.7 million. The New York Post. The Washington Times. MSNBC has Joe Scarborough and Tucker Carlson, CNN has Nancy Grace and Glenn Beck. USA Today leans conservative enough that it was the newspaper that got the most access to the White House in the first term of the Bush administration.
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) By that token, steelworkers should have a basic understanding that they work with extremely dangerous matierials, so should the mills quit giving them things like steeltoed boots and heat resistant materials? Coal workers should understand that coal dust will kill them, so should the mines quit giving them things like breathing masks? To me I see it as the same sort of vein. These are workplace conditions which kill employees. I don't know why it isn't looked at in the same light. I really don't. Do you also think that bars shouldn't be allowed to serve peanuts in case someone with a rabid peanut allergy should happen to walk in the door? There's a big difference between working with 2000 degree metal and hazardous material and some dude smoking while drinking his beer. This is a Nanny State law at its most restrictive. It sucks - and yeah, it does hurt business after implementation.
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ May 1, 2007 -> 01:21 PM) I can't believe on a planet this size, we can't find a place for them. We can, its called the US.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2007 -> 08:23 AM) I have asked this everytime that this subject has come up, but why is there no health concerns for the employees in establishments? Every other occupation has OSHA breathing down their necks about dangerous working conditions, and they are forced to make adaptations to make the enviornment as safe as possible for the people who work there. Its almost sad, but why hasn't OSHA stepped to the forefront and made this a workplace safety issue? I think that making a tax incentive for being smoke free would be a much better way to help enforce this. People who choose to work in nightclubs, bars and casinos should have a basic understanding of the atmosphere of the environment they work in. i.e. smoke filled, drunk sometimes belligerent people.... I personally find it unreasonable to limit the practice of legally acceptable behavior in public - this includes drinking IMO.
