After Snakes on a Plane only got 15 mil its opening weekend, I think they were afraid the internet was an empty echo chamber.

I'm sure you've heard this before - but I don't understand amendments banning gay marriage. Going beyond the fact that I don't understand why its acceptable to codify discrimination against a class of people in this day and age, I don't understand the argument that gay marriage destroys regular marriage. Partially because I don't buy the argument that your marriage means less if two guys get the same legal rights as a married couple as you do. The meaning of marriage is between two people, and not the state. Giving someone else the same rights you enjoy doesn't mean that you are losing these rights. Well, until a lot of these amendments pass. The one that passed in Texas leaves the door open for invalidating every existing marriage in the state. The one that's proposed in Virginia may prevent unmarried couples from being protected in events like domestic abuse, regardless of their sexuality. Although the Attorney General says that this isn't the case, judges make that decision. And they made that decision in Ohio - and guess what, straight unmarried couples who are victims of domestic abuse? They aren't protected. I think the idea of messing with marriage can be dangerous for a society... but it only seems dangerous to me when you take rights away.

I can't imagine that the timing is any more political than Saddam Hussein's trial verdict coming out the Sunday before an election.

I hope he gets the help he needs.

Rumor is that the following will be published jointly in the following newspapers on Monday- The Army Times, The Navy Times, The Air Force Times, The Marine Corps Times. These papers have a parent company of Gannett Newspapers, which owns USA Today. Taken from dailykos, so take with grain of salt.

Speaking of which, apparently the US government apparently accidentally put up a basic guide to building a nuclear bomb in Arabic recently. This was to make public an archive of seized documents from the Saddam Hussein era. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/03/world/mi...artner=homepage

Sorry I thought this was going in a SCLM (so called liberal media) slant.

OK, so there is ONE exception....

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) Rex, you think that a Democratic Congress WANTS to work with the President? No personal offense, here... but what the f*** planet are you on? Look at the constant negativity and personal crap that's spewed every day from the Democrats... and they want to work with this president? Come on. You know what? Maybe I'm naive, but I'm pretty sure that a Democratic party does want good things to happen in this country. And I think that they would allow the opposition a bigger hand in making things work in this country than the GOP would have. The GOP led Congress doesn't even give Democrats a real voice here. Maybe the Democrats won't either, but you know what? I'm sick of thinking that unacceptable is good enough because the other people might be unacceptable too. Nobody gets an automatic vote from me. They have to earn it. And there's very little that the GOP leadership has ever done in the last two years to earn my vote.

That's the same Trib that endorsed the President in 2000 and 2004, right?

Text of an email sent to supporters by Senator George Allen of Virginia http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...n1.3eab2ff.html QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 05:48 PM) The GOP needs to get something positive going and fast otherwise it could be a nigthmare election that could have a real negative effect on our country (sorry but I have my strong leanings to the GOP and I think them losing control of the house and/or senate will be a terrible thing for our country). I've already seen the democratic party hamper a great state like California. Albeit we have great weather, but economically we've lost tons of big time businesses to other states because of our ridiculous anti business laws that pretty much cripple big and middle businessman (even small businessmen). It all depends on how a Democratic House and Senate is ready to work with the President. If they are willing to work together, its only good for this country. If they are willing to change the partisan tone in the Congress, its only good for this country. The GOP has proven over the last six years, that they don't just want power in the congress - they want absolute power. Bipartisan amendments and bills don't even get a vote because if it isn't approved of by the majority of the majority, its never actually heard on the floor of the House or Senate. The current Congressional climate is obstructionist to bipartisanship and extremely so. If the Congress flips and there's no change to that, there'll have been no point to it.

Speaking of candidates who won't apologize, Sen. George Allen of Virginia won't even say what his handlers did was wrong when they tackled a "heckler" at a campaign event in front of TV cameras. http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/02/vir...e.ap/index.html Senator Allen IS up for reelection.

The DNC isn't putting a lot of money into campaigns, but it has put money into Arizona. The DNC has been focusing on a "50 state strategy," growing the party at all levels across the country. For example the DNC funds three full time staffers in every state now, helping to grow the party and win elections at all levels. The DCCC (Congressional Campaign Committee) is going into record levels of debt because there are too many competitive races this time around.... At the beginning of the year, they were expecting 15-20 races worth putting money down for. Now that number has ballooned to about 60.

QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 03:02 PM) Rex, are you allowed to vote on straight tickets ? Hey, don't ask don't tell.
-
This is the first, and hopefully last time, I'll be pulling a straight ticket ballot for the Democrats. Admittedly its because federally, I believe that the only way improvement comes to our government is through a balance of political power right now. Locally, our government has been GOP run for 25 years and the city I live in is forgotten. I voted straight ticket one other time, I voted straight GOP in 2003.

Equating Kerry's remarks with Mark Foley's actions? Please, this is just silly. It's six days left until an election. And the GOP is losing on nearly every issue. So instead of defending their record, they attack.... a junior Senator... who isn't running for anything.

There is a debate on how to solve our problems in Iraq on Capitol Hill. Problem is, the only ones doing it are the Democrats.

They arrested a couple suspects today. I have a friend who lived just under the ridge from the fires... I remember after 24 hours, the radio machine said that a change in winds could mean his city gets evacuated.... but I think that area is safe now.

QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 12:05 PM) Haven't you heard... Master manipulator MJF is now the most important thing in politics. At least according to Laura Bush....

I say give her the two million she's entitled to tax free. And then what's left after the punitive damages are levied - if anything.

I boycott Wal-Mart. Mostly because I've lived in small towns where not long after Wal-Mart opened, there wasn't any other place left to shop.... At the time, I was actually driving 15 miles to get my groceries at something that wasn't a big box store. They also unionbust to an extreme degree. On the same token, I also boycott Whole Foods. They unionbust too and frankly I find it hypocritical for a company to claim to be sooo progressive but still actively unionbust. Entertainmentwise, I tend to never listen to artists again after I meet them. They either aren't the person I expect - or are just so rude that I never want to give a dime to their work again.

QUOTE(mreye @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 08:15 AM) PDs? I listen to a lot of country music, hell, 60% of the 2000+ songs on my Ipod are country and I have never heard about any feud between Toby Keith and the Dixie Chicks being the reason. The "Boycott the Dixie Chicks" dealio was totally, 100% related to Natalie Manes' comments about Bush. The stated reason? Absolutely dead on right on that. But at first it didn't take so well... because the Chicks had just released a single "Travellin Soldier" which was - believe it or not - received some of the best audience preference test results in Country radio history. The CMA's or whatever the name of the awards show is shortly after was the breaking point for a lot of the people who choose the music that the radio stations play - sort of because they felt the DC were looking down on the rest of the establishment. Sort of biting the hand that feeds you or something. At least that's what I've been told. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 08:04 AM) However, she's no Bea Arthur . . . Why the green? God'll get you for that Tex....

Indeed. It is always different. Instead of talking about how to create a strategy to win in Iraq, instead of talking about improving the conditions of those in the field fighting in our name, instead of talking about improving the lives of veterans who suffered serious injuries in this fight and need our country's help, we're concerned with what the Junior Senator from Massachussets who isn't up for reelection said and whether he inadvertently insulted soldiers in a general way. Maybe if he takes it back, the violence in Iraq will suddenly stop. John Kerry's latest comment on the situation: And you know what, whatever he said a couple days ago - he's pretty spot on. We're six days before an election. We should be concerning ourselves about issues that matter and who is better equipped to lead them. Instead we're concerned with whether Michael J Fox faked his shakes, whether John Kerry said soldiers are stupid and what Jim Webb wrote about in a novel. It, frankly, makes me sick.
