  1. So, then you'd support requiring minors to have permission slips before being able to purchase trans-fatty foods or being able to only purchase them with a parent present? Because, clearly they aren't able to determine what's in their best interest.... And it is all about the children, right?
  2. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) Institutional bias my ass. There's an institutional bias against fat and ugly people, let's create a new protection for them. There are numerous classes that have gone through some form of discrimination before and never received special protection for it, that's his point. The Court is choosing gays as a protected class, even when an entire states population voted the opposite way. That's the Court deciding cultural issues that should be left in the hands of the majority in a particular location. In my opinion that's like saying that the Supreme Court issuing decisions supporting equal rights for any class of people (race, creed, religion, etc) is deciding a "cultural issue." I don't want my rights up for a vote, and I'm pretty sure you don't either. Either you have the same rights as anyone else, or you don't.
  3. Well you also make it sound like an effort to regulate the ingredients that fatty food is prepared in to make it less damaging to its consumers is the same thing as banning french fries. They are both nanny state laws. And if one is acceptable, the other one should be too.
  4. The NJ ruling stops short of saying Gay Marriage is a requirement.... but it does say this.

    Bye Bye Taurus

Actually Toyota pays, on average, a higher wage than GM and Ford union shops. The drive to unionize Toyota has had a side effect of making sure Toyota employees are well taken care of. As a result, KY's Toyota plant can't get more than 40% of the employees on board for the UAW.
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 03:05 PM) Why? Adults are perfectely competent and if they want to eat fatty foods then that's they're perogative. Children are not capable of determining what they should be seeing and what they should not. That being true then why ban fatty foods and leave porn in the hands of children? That approach makes no sense at all. This doesn't ban any fatty food whatsoever, merely regulates the ingredients that can be used to create the fatty food. If we nanny state on this, why not nanny state on that? Or maybe instead, parents can just sign a permission slip every time Junior goes to McDonalds too.
  7. Funny, I enjoyed Celebrity Skin, a little.
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 09:32 PM) I agree on all the above, except maybe a modified version of point number one. I do think candidates should have free TV and radio time, and that any other window for use would be very limited. This I'd like to hear your explanation of. What possible good does anything other than a popular vote do for a national office? Because as I see it, anything other than that disenfranchises some people. I meant eliminated. One person = one vote.

I feel the same way about GM. They've done nothing to offer me a car I'm interested in. I heard that Ford is now considering an alliance with Renault/Nissan. Could be a great thing for them, given that their guy Ghosn saved both companies.
  10. Could be his tendency to drop the N-bomb a lot.
  11. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Oh absolutely. Best work written by Scalia, to me, speaking to this issue is his dissent in Romer v Evans. Colorado held a statewide vote to deny homosexuals preferential treatment with regards to discrimination, effectively taking them out of the 'protected' classes of the states anti-discrimination statutes. The people, through the legislature, made this change, but the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional. It's a great case to read: http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getc...=U10179#Scene_1 Here's a snippet from Scalias dissent, which I agree with 110%: What Scalia conveniently ignores is that there is an institutional bias against homosexuality in the United States. He also compares it to political affiliation, being a baseball fan and wearing fur. While its true that there probably are baseball loving fur wearing Republican gay people, sexuality does not necessarily equal behavior. It isn't dangerous to be a Cubs fan. It isn't dangerous to be a Republican. In many places in the US and around the world, it's dangerous to be gay. I'm not a fan of Scalia because his basic premise is wrong, and by writing what he writes, does indeed take a position in the "Culture War." Sexual Preference is sought to be included in anti-discrimination laws because there is a pattern of discrimination and violence that has historically been waged against homosexuals, suspected or real.
  12. I see MO, VA and TN as being toss ups... and AZ is even moving in that direction given the last couple polls.... I think it will be between 51-49 on either side of the aisle after November 7. I should say too that the RCCC has pretty much written off 14 Congressional seats as losses. There are no serious challenges to Dem held seats this year. I think we are looking at 25-30 seat gains for the Democrats.
  13. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) I wonder why Grohl and Novaselik hate Courtney Ono so much. ... Don't make me write the "Don't make fun of Yoko Ono" dissertation.
  14. No, the Tookie dude doesn't post here anymore. You also forgot that in about ten posts from now, a moderator looks at the discussion shakes his/her head at how nasty it got so quickly and then closes it. Assuming the thread stays true to form, that is.
  15. 50-50 Senate = a Republican Senate. Dick Cheney, as President of the Senate would cast the tie-breaking vote. I see Democratic Pickups in PA, OH, MT, RI, MO or TN (but not both) I see a disputed vote total in VA and/or TN. I see Democratic Retention in NJ and MD (although depending on what the NJ Supreme Court says in two hours may affect the senate race poorly for Menendez.) I see a 50-50 Senate and a 229-206 House for the Dems.
  16. I'm aware and I find that idea more beneficial than this law.
  17. Races are tightening. AZ Sen Kyl(r, i) 47 Pederson (d) 41 MO Sen Talent (r,i) 48 McCaskill (d) 45 OH Sen Brown (d) 47 DeWine (r, i) 39 TN Sen Corker ® 49 Ford (d) 45 NJ Sen Menendez (d,i) 45 Kean ® 41 VA Sen Webb (d) 48 Allen (r,i) 45
  18. So Nanny State! Next thing is you'll be wanting to ban transfats too.... *insert joke about porn, lube and slippery slopes here.*
  19. It just seems like more nanny state. I wish parents would be more responsible.
  20. Obama is a rock star. I worked security at a Corzine rally featuring Obama. 2000 people showed up, and it was one of four rallies featuring Obama and Corzine that day within 60 miles of the location. It was crazy.
  21. Personally, I think that broadcast advertising time should actually be free and available to candidates on a limited basis within a specific campaign window. Outside of that, I think specific campaign advertising should be not allowed. Any issue advertising within the political window would NOT be subject to political advertising rates, as is currently required. I think corporations should not be allowed to donate any money to any candidate or issue whatsoever. I think that no primary should be allowed to be held more than three months prior to a general election. I think the electoral college should be allowed. I think that any form of voting deemed admissible should have a paper trail receipt that is kept for recounts.
  22. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 03:06 PM) http://www.sltrib.com/ci_4539917?source=rss President Clinton signs a law requiring some form of proof of age like a credit card number or such to access online porn or other offensive material. Your ACLU, that great protector of our rights is now suing to stop it. Shocking. I thought you were all about parental responsibility? I don't understand why you'd have a problem with requiring parents the responsibility that their children aren't exposed to this kind of material.
  23. Not saying she's my choice either, but she's a freakin rock star in person. It's kinda crazy.
  24. U2 can not prevent a TV show from using Sunday Bloody Sunday as a lead in if they pay broadcast licensing fees AFAIK.
