  1. I'm pretty sure the insurgency in Iraq is more than Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Although I think its too early to say this is a turning point, its definitely a positive step. However, to sit there and say everything is peachy is far from correct either. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 12:56 PM) Washington Post continues blackout on positive news from Iraq The front page of today's hardcopy Washington Post is all about Iraq. The top story focuses on the House debate on the war. Below that is a piece on alleged Shiite militia "control" of Iraqi prisons (that's the headline, anyway; the story documents infiltration, not control). The Post serves up two more Iraq stories on page 22. One is a story about the release at long last from Abu Ghraib (the featured ex-detainee spent his time there playing soccer and listening to the radio). The other is about the resignation of an aide to Prime Minister al-Maliki. What about the seized document in which al Qaeda acknowledges that its situation in Iraq as "bleak?" The Post does not mention this item until the 21st paragraph of the story about the aide who resigned (which, again, appears at page 22). Moreover, the Post devotes its discussion to questioning the document's authenticity. It notes that, unlike "typical statements issued by al-Qaeda in Iraq" the seized document fails to refer to the U.S. as "crusaders" and Shiites as "rejectionists" or "dogs." But of course the documents aren't statements issued by al-Qadea for external consumption; they purport to be an internal assessment of its situation on the ground. In order to vanquish any positive thought a reader nonetheless might have after reading about al Qaeda's gloomy assessment, the Post immediately follows this discussion by rehearsing the American death toll in Iraq, a point it also makes in the second paragraph of its lead front page article. When it comes to Iraq, the news section of the Post has become an anti-war spin machine, and nothing more. Shiite militias are not Al-Qaeda.
  2. A convention is not a requirement for changing the constitution. There has only been one constitutional convention in the history of the United States, and that's the one that wrote the constitution and bill of rights. Everything else has been done through supermajorities in the Congress, Senate and ratification in the state house.

    Hot mama...

Paris Hilton IS turning into wax.
  4. Well, I don't know about you but I've heard that flag burners are going to families' houses at night and casting a spell turning straight marriages into gay marriages. It's really quite scary.
  5. SS: What Kip is referring to is what is going on now. The Clinton administration didn't ignore Somalia after 1993, it provided some limited support to a couple of the warlords in the country to keep an islamist insurgency from gaining strength through armed struggle. The current administration expanded the program giving more aid financially and militarily to non islamist warlords. The problem is that the Islamist people just took Mogadishu and most of Somalia.
  6. There is some arguments to why they would vote No. I don't agree with it, but it still is a valid concern. This is an unprecdented action by the Dem caucus, and if you start the precedent now, what happens when its time for a political grudge to get settled within the party?
  7. This would be the first amendment to restrict behavior protected in the Bill of Rights.
  8. It's not the whole Black Caucus that feels this way. In fact it was a member of the CBC that made the motion to suspend Jefferson from the committee, and Charles Rangel also supported Jefferson's departure from the committee.
  9. The House Democrats voted to suspend Rep. Jefferson from his membership on the Ways and Means committee pending results of the ongoing investigation regarding bribery and other fraud. According to CNN. No link because it just happened. This investigation began at the request of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, by the way. Say what you want about either party - but this is a good example of a political party actually being responsible with the position it carries within the government and should be applauded.
  10. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 05:40 PM) Maybe among Democrats. Having a more conservative VP to offset a more liberal nominee would have some impact among Republican voters. How much is debateable, though. Who among the Dems would beat Lieberman if he was the GOP nominee? Hillary? Gore? Kerry? Edwards? Neither party seems to have a strong, front-running candidate right now (unless Guiliani would change his mind). Generally any frontrunner in 2006 isn't the frontrunner by the time of the convention. And it really should end someone's political career if a longtime senator can't win reelection in a primary where you don't have to be a democrat to vote in the primary.
  11. If it becomes a constitutional amendment, it can not be found unconstitutional. Sad that our Congressional priorities seem to be to spend time and money to make sure that nobody burns a flag out of protest yet we can't seem to find the time to address issues that really matter.
  12. The only person I got fanboy over was Cia Berg, from Whale.
  13. So sorta like my waitress at Denny's *rimshot*
  14. Joe Lieberman seems to be someone that people like less the more people see of him - like John Edwards. And Gingrich in the VP slot will probably matter little because the story will invariably become Dem nominee v GOP nominee.
  15. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 04:03 PM) The 'when can it live on its on?' argument is an equally pointless one, IMO. How long is a full-term baby going to live on its own without care? Point of clarification. Your ARE destroying 'life' when you terminate a first trimester fetus. Whether that life is a human being is the issue for most. You destroy 'life' when youre sperm goes down the shower drain. Human life too, albeit in a dead-end haploid form. Not a human being though, of course I really dislike all the legalistic arguments about conception and life and human life. Haploid egg and sperm are 'human life,' but not human beings. Fertilized diploid ovum, blastula, gastrula, and embryo are also all 'human life,' but not (yet) human beings. Defining THE spot in the continuum where it's now a human being is artificial and a losing exercise. None of that is to be construed as an argument against pro-choice, merely an argument against ignoring facts of biology for the sake of constructing a legalistic argument. A tumor is technically a form of human life as well, no?
  16. Is it me or when you look at the picture at the top of the thread, the first thing that you think of is: "Why is he wearing a Santa hat?"
  17. I told the band Fuel that I had to do laundry when they invited me to see their show. The second time I met them, I stole their pop tarts. (but seriously, I'm sure they hardly noticed that the Spice Girls had left *rimshot*!) I met Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam. G Love of G Love and Special Sauce. Stabbing Westward, and a few other bands too. I think I got a prank phone call from Travis of Blink 182 when I was doing top 40 radio as well. My favorite celebrity encounters are not with musicians. I got into an argument with Andy Rooney from 60 minutes and Ted Koppel once told me that he was eating a cheeseburger.
  18. A fetus does not form until the end of the first trimester. Prior to the second trimester, the baby to be is considered an embryo.
  19. The Colbert Report has very much come into its own. When it first started, I found myself unable to watch beyond the Word. Now that the show has settled down somewhat, it's gotten a lot funnier.
  20. I totally agree that would be highly successful in 2008 - for the Democrats. Even Walter Mondale would be able to crush the Joementum from a Lieberman/Gingrich ticket.
  21. This is a very positive step for Iraq, and a situation where we did the right thing. Let's hope that rolls on from now on.
  22. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 12:26 PM) agreed. this is the 2nd positive thing i've seen from gwb in the past day. the other being taking the high road and calling to apologize to a reporter he made fun of for wearing sunglasses. the guy had some sort of medical condition in which the glasses help. Yeah, its called blindness. :-) The President has done some positive things lately. Kudos for that.
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 08:53 AM) http://www.nypost.com/gossip/pagesix/the_h...ad_pagesix_.htm June 14, 2006 -- PARIS Hilton is so upset that Lindsay Lohan has been seeing her ex, Greek playboy Stavros Niarchos, she screamed insults at Lohan at Butter on Monday night. Witnesses report Hilton went up to Lohan and shouted, "I can't believe you and Stavros! You are ridiculous!" After taking more insults and curses, Lohan said, "That's how you say hello? I don't need to respond to you." Lohan promptly left. A rep for Lohan said, "Correct. Paris tried to pick a fight with her and started screaming at her, but Lindsay took the high road." After Lohan left, Hilton did a striptease for N.Y. Knick David Lee, Eli Manning and a bunch of other N.Y. Giants. OK... Lindsay, you are a good looking chick (now that you cut the blow and started eating again) but get a better diet honey. You do not need to be munching on Paris Hilton's sloppy seconds. And Paris... Good grief.. can you possibly be any more nasty..?Ick. I love how the stopry ends. After Lohan left, Paris Hilton took off her clothes.
  24. QUOTE(minors @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 01:44 AM) A CHILD IS A CHILD there it doesnt matter to me how far along it is. So that is why I abstain. If the women is raped yes it is still murder and family same goes for a family member and anytime the mothers life in jeopardy then it isn't It becomes a life saving procedure. Now why are people like Cerbaho, Heads, Lowercase, Rex and the liberals against the Death Penalty that kills thugs but yet gleefully defend abortion or "right to choose"? A killers life is more worth saving that an innocent helpless baby? Where in this thread did I say that I agree with abortion? The truth is that I don't know at what point human life becomes a human being. I hate the idea of abortion myself, but I think this is a policy decision that is more public health than politics, and ultimately should be left up to public health officials to decide what a safe, ethical policy should be.
