How do you know he isn't giving money to these causes? Just cause he keeps some for himself?

It seems to me that there's a big difference between what the President did here and what other presidents may have done with Echelon and business spying (which btw is a totally different animal.) Echelon - which I have a problem with - is sort of like listening to a scanner from what I understand. You aren't picking someone to listen to, you're just listening. From what I understand, the Bush administration is specifically targetting US Citizens. Specific ones, and eavesdropping on them without getting a warrant. To say that's justified because Clinton used Echelon and because Clinton may or may not have spied on foreign business interests (and I won't take Insight magazine as established fact, being somewhat familiar with the rag) is to say that because of Echelon and other alleged illegal spying its ok for the cops to just walk into your apartment when you aren't there unannounced and do a little snooping. I will say that if Clinton authorized this business spying, its damn wrong. I think Echelon is damn wrong. Did JFK and LBJ do this as well? Possibly. We know that Nixon did and that's why we have the laws regarding eavesdropping on US Citizens in the first place. I'm glad he's taking responsibility for violating the law. That's good. But he should be held accountable as well for violating the law, best of intentions or otherwise. His defense appears to basically be "I'm the President and you guys said any means necessary." Yeah, that's not a defense. His defense is an insult to the Constitution and to every American alive and dead.

Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress

Can I see a party choosing a chick for her gams that go from here to ya ya? Yes. Can I see a party choosing a chick for her lack of gams... No. -

I miss South Bend though. Because all the rehab starts for major leaguers would be there. They have a plaque at the Cove where Fisk hit a home run.

Except for when the President wants it done. It's sneaky, tricky and shouldn't be done. And its been done way too often and for far too long.

Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Dec 19, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) meh, maybe. I wouldn't vote for her just because of her community service record or the fact she is a major in the national guard. Seems like a fairly thin resume for congress, I would need to know about her views on issues and hear her defend these views. Well she just announced her campaign two days ago. That will come. It's a track record that's better than most before they run for public office. George Bush was a failed oil man and minority partner in the Texas Rangers. Bill Frist was a Doctor and owned part of HCA. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a bodybuilder and a (bad) actor. Ted Kennedy was the brother of John and Robert. Jon Corzine ran Goldman Sachs. Frank Lautenberg founded ADP. If those are track records worthy, I'd say that hers is right up there. The amount of stuff you'd have to study and know and understand to effectively put together community service programs in the developing world would definitely qualify you for public office. -
Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress
Rex Kickass replied to Mercy!'s topic in The Filibuster
I think that's what I said at the beginning. Just because everyone puts amputee at the front of her name doesn't mean that its her focus. Did her injury get her some attention? Absolutely. But at the same time, for apparently a lot of people - she'll always be amputee Tammy Duckworth rather than Tammy Duckworth. -
They have a few shows like that, but they are getting what audience they have because people are sicking of searching through show after show on MTV and MTV2 for music. Fuse has been around in its current form for nearly three years, and before that several years as "Much Music USA" the American satellite network of the Canadian's MTV thing.

Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress
Rex Kickass replied to Mercy!'s topic in The Filibuster
She's been a leader with Rotary in establishing community service programs in hotspots throughout Southeast Asia including East Timor. She's now a Major in the Illinois National Guard. Makes her as qualified as anyone else. She is, by definition, a leader. And the amputation has nothing to do with her being encouraged to run. Chances are they were eyeing her before her injury, and possibly before she left for Iraq. I'm willing to bet she had been somewhat active politically before she left to Iraq as well. And it's just entirely possible that she wants to run for Congress. Another possibility that everyone else here has ignored. -

So she's a qualified person recruited to enter public service. I don't see the problem. -
I think he was addressing the whole Congress.

You do know that when she wasn't a soldier she was co-ordinating community service projects in East Timor, right? Of course you don't, you have her missing legs to stare at. -
I absolutely do.

Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress
Rex Kickass replied to Mercy!'s topic in The Filibuster
I didn't know that Rotary International used her as a co-ordinator based on her future amputee status. She was a leader before she lost her legs. -
From what I understand, there's a big difference between Echelon and other things. This was targetted, not some random surveillance.
-
Which would mean spying on our journalists.
-
There's no need for a President to do it. That's what's infuriating. How many secret court judges whose job is pretty much just to agree to warrants on secret eavesdropping do you really think would say no to a request for secret eavesdropping on a person of interest regarding terrorism? I'm guessing none - but that's just me.
-
So, therefore the whole story is nullified because they wanted the scoop out before the book release? It's still pretty important regardless. I love how everyone here peers into the motivation of the messenger before they even look at the message. That's just plain sad.

Amputee vet running to replace Hyde in Congress

I'm not gonna argue the stupid point anymore. But if her ideas are right to begin with, what the f*** does it matter if she's an amputee or if she was recruited because she's got no legs or if she poops roses and pure sunlight for that matter? She's running against Henry Hyde. And he's facing a stiff challenge because he's been a terrible Congressman. But rather than focus on issues that might actually matter, people here focus on her limbs - or lack of them. So the f*** what? -
Kap, they didn't hold the article because of a pending book release. They held the article at the request of the White House.

I've known of her candidacy for weeks. I found out she was an amputee yesterday. Nobody in the party is talking about her missing legs. But if you wanna say its because she's all stumpy - that's your perogative.
