Another Year of Disapointment for the Sox as injuries and shallow pitching allowed the Sox to finish 5th (71-90) in the AL West. On the field the Sox were in the bottom in runs scored with (631) and batting average (.244) only Baltimore was worse. The hitting star was Harold Baines that after an injury prone 1987 took over a full time DH role and hit .277 with 13 homers and 81 RBI’s. Catcher Carlton Fisk (.277), First baseman Greg Walker (.247) and leftfielder Ivan Calderon (.212) battled injuries all season long. Fisk had 19 homers and 50 RBI’s. Part timers Dan Pasqua (.227) and Darryl Boston (.217) had 20 and 15 homers a piece. Promising Center Fielder Kenny Williams was demoted after hitting .158 and a failed Experiment at Third base which saw him make 14 Errors in 30 games. Ozzie Guillen and Gary Redus had 25 steals a piece. The Pitching leader was Veteran Jerry Reuss (13-9) who was signed in spring training and finished with a 3.44 ERA. Melido Perez (12 - 10) 3.79 ERA and Jack McDowell (5-10) 3.97 ERA 2 promising right handers rounded out the staff. Bobby Thigpen added 34 saves. After the season manager Jim Fregosi was fired and replaced by Jeff Torborg.

I watched them 88 and 89 sucked. who can you say Hibbard Sucked in 89 when he had a 3.17 ERA, and wasn't even on the Sox in 88. Perez had a 3.98 in 88 both teams sucked and couldn't play defense

Althrough many thought they were out of the race early in the season the White Sox made a strong enough finish to pass two clubs and move up to fifth. After the season, the White Sox rebuilding program continued when lefty Floyd Bannister was traded to Kansas City for a package of four fine young prospects. Bannister with his 16-11 and 3.58 ERA, was the top pitcher for Chicago. Among the highlights of the season was the power performance of 39 yr old catcher Carlton Fisk. He became the oldest catcher in major league history to hit 20 or more homers in a season when he hit 23 while batting .256 and driving in 71 runs. Firstbaseman Greg Walker led the Club in RBI's with 94 hitting .256 with 27 homers. Leftfielder Ivan Calderon was the top home run hitter with 28 while producing a .293 average and 83 RBI. Althrough hamperedby injury, rightfielder Harold Baines produced a solid season, hitting .293 with 20 homers and 93 RBI. CenterFielder Ken Williams hit .281. Leadoff man Gary Redus finished third in the league in stolen bases with 52 and Williams 21. Guillen hit .271 In another off-season trade, pitcher Richard Dotson was traded to New York for lefty slugger Dan Pasqua who hit 17 homers as a part-time player in New York. Rookie Jack Mcdowell won all three of his decisions and had a 1.93 ERA after being called up in Spetember. (This is the last one from my book, the ones from now on are going to be written by me, i hope ya all still enjoy them)
