  1. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 07:14 AM) I read this article. What did he say that was wrong? He didn't say anything bad about BA. His expectations are very high for BA and he wants him to get better. He wants him to get faster. He wants him to play winter ball to work on it. What is wrong with that? He is a young player that should go play winter ball and get better. I don't get it. Are you guys just looking for fault? Ozzie is trying to get BA to retard one of his five tools so he can improve another, instead of encouraging him to improve each one.
  2. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 02:57 AM) This isn't learning on the job. This is just not knowing the game of baseball. The worst thing that happened to Ozzie Guillen is the fact that we won the world series last year. Now he thinks he's God, and he can point at his ring and tell everyone else to go f*** off because "he knows what he's doing." Bottom line is that your fans shouldn't be smarter than you are on a consistent basis. Everyone here FIRST guesses him, and the vast majority of the time, they are correct. In my book, the job of a manager is to put his players in the best position to succeed, and by doing so, "win" more games for the team than he loses. He's lost far more...OR, not given us a fair shot at winning...than he's won for us. Last year he handed the ball off to the starters in the playoffs and they carried the torch. Jerry Manuel could have done that job. He didn't have to manage anything in the playoffs, and his moves during the season were very suspect. Ozzie isn't responsible for bringing a title to the city of chicago. The White Sox organization is. Until people stop correlating ozzie and a WS title at a high rate, he'll always get a free pass in this town from the media and the "new" group of fans we now have. Night after night we watch him fill out questionable lineup cards and make bizarre in-game moves. Your manager shouldn't frustrate the hell out of you to this degree. But he trots out his bulls*** about how he's the smartest guy in the world because he came here when he was whatever age and was able to survive. The line of "he brought us a world championship" is false. 20 years from now when i look back on the 2005 team, i won't remember ozzie being the braintrust behind a title team. I'll remember the amazing pitching and the job that Kenny did way before i recall Ozzie's actions. BTW, why are you talking about what type of manager he will be when he's 60? The time to win is now. I want a manager who can win us ballgames now, not hope he's good in the future. Besides, he's shown me enough this season to make me think he'll never be a good manager.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 04:58 PM) Yea, but if you read between the lines, he wants BA on base, and then to utilize that talent (speed) there as well. Yes, Anderson needs to be on base to utilize his speed, but nowhere is it stated or implied that Guillen feels Anderson needs to improve his OBP.
  4. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 04:58 PM) or not stating that. He wants him to get better. Does Ozzie love speed? Yes, you can tell that. He wants BA to go to winer ball and work on things and get better. What is so hard to understand. I think you're having difficulty following the discussion. Nowhere did I state OG is a bad manager for telling BA "to go to winter ball and get better." This is what I stated: "[Ozzie Guillen's] locked in to a belief that speed is a more important asset in a leadoff hitter than OBP. He greatly overvalues speed." Kapkomet and I continued discussion on that topic, and then you replied to my post with the quote at the top of this post. Seems like a reasonable response.
  5. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) That's true... are you agreeing with what I'm saying? If you go back to BA's case, he wants to see a higher OBP. And his speed on the basepaths needs to be utilized. Someone else mentioned 30-30 in this thread, and it's possible, if he works hard enough. I haven't heard or read Ozzie stating that.
  6. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 04:44 PM) Do you really see that? I don't. I think he things that once you raise your OBP, your speed is invaluable. Then why does Ozzie keep starting Podsednik--who's known for his speed--at leadoff instead of Mackowiak--who has a higher OBP?
  7. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 03:35 PM) now provide me an example of how BA was picked on. How 'bout the problem Ozzie has evaluating players. Ozzie doesn't think Brandon McCarthy is better than any of the starting pitchers, and grossly undervalues Brian Anderson. Also, OG has a distorted view that a player cannot both hit for power and have speed. In 2005, OG evaluated Damaso Marte as being a better pitcher than Brandon McCarthy, going with Marte in both playoff rosters. He's locked in to a belief that speed is a more important asset in a leadoff hitter than OBP. He greatly overvalues speed.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:40 AM) You are so full of crap. Every time he puts a player in any position this year, the player has failed. We are lucky, with this pitching staff, that we are even close to being in the playoffs. If we had Jerry Manuel or Terry Bevington would that make you happy? Ozzie is probably the best manager we have had in 50 years, and the only one you have seen bring us a World Series ring. BUt you are right, it is his fault that every changeup our staff throws gets rocked, that Paulie hit into 2 double plays last night. We are lucky to have Ozzie as our manager, without him we would never be considered one of the elite teams in the league like we are now. Wrong. Brandon McCarthy hasn't failed as a starting pitcher. Rob Mackowiak hasn't failed as a LF, BA hasn't failed in CF in the second half.
  9. In the 2000 and 2005 seasons, the Sox received a lot from their pitching staff. Because of the great efforts of those two staffs, they suffered pitching injuries in the following season. Contreras went on the DL in 2006, and I strongly believe he's still pitching hurt. Buehrle followed up his All-star first half with the worst stretch of his career and now is having back problems. Garcia has lost velocity from last season and has pitched very poorly all season. I've noticed it's a trend in baseball for a team that received extraordinary efforts from their pitching staff to suffer the injury effects the following season. It happened to the Cubs in 2004 and IIRC, to Roy Halladay after his Cy Young season. There are more examples I've noticed but am too lazy to research. Despite our current injuries and underachieving starters, I still support the decision to ride them to a World Series championship. Since World Series chances don't occur often, I'm in favor of burning out the arms of every pitcher on the staff to possibly obtain the World Series. Perhaps this is why KW tried trading Garcia in the offseason and swaping El Duque for Vazquez. It could have worked out for 2006 had Vazquez been good, McCarthy had a starting position, and Ozzie limited the innings of Contreras and Buehrle.
  10. OMG, the defense of OG is sickening. The arguments made for him are flawed. 16 pages of this?
  11. AJ eliciting audible laughter from me as he motions that he will give the ball to a Boston fan, but decides to keep it instead. PWned.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 08:40 PM) He called Hawk's son an asshole. Shoota's dream cage match: Hawk Harrelson's son vs Christine O'Reilly Well, if Wily Mo does hit a homer, it might go 600 feet. I'm impressed you remember my anti-Christine O'Reilly thread. I'm still think it's bogus that she has a World Series ring and I don't.
  13. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 08:32 PM) So can we win a game where we dont score more than 3 runs????? Only if JG is pitching.
  14. Uh, I just started watching the game, who is the asshole playing with his cellphone in the booth with Hawk and DJ?
  15. QUOTE(stretchstretch @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) I keep reading all these rants about who should be in CF, Mack is pleading to not play CF, BA deserves to start, what inning Garcia comes out, should BMAC replace Garcia or Vasquez, PK and AJ shouldn't be trying to pull everything, and on and on and on, but is Ozzie really any worse than last year? is the offense any worse than last year? all anyone has to do is look at last year's playoffs to see PITCHING and BREAKS, with a little offense sprinkled in, allowed us to win it all. Pitching: Runs scored by the opposition in the ALDS and ALCS over 8 games: 2,4,3 2,1,2,2,3 and the WS: 3,6,5,0 Starter goes >6, Cotts, Cliff, Bobby, El Duque do the rest, score>5 runs......ball game!! World Series Championship, Ozzie is a Genius Breaks and critical hits: Graffinino through the legs, Gooch goes long, AJ called third strike, Crede double down the line, JD elbow hit by pitch, PK sitting on first pitch from Qualls, Lidge being spooked from the Pujols experience, Harris punch to left, JD dribbler up the middle Simply put, we do not have the pitching this year to negate lackluster offensive outings, errors, and managerial mistakes. It's not going to happen again this year, and Ozzie wasn't a genius, it was just one magical year where the baseball gods were smiling upon us. If we're going to get into the playoffs or make a statement in it, it's going to have to be done a different way, because this staff is not going to turn it around in 25 days...... I'm not a blind optimist, but I think the Sox can win the World Series. If they make the playoffs, they only have to win two consecutive series to repeat as champs. I say two because the NL is so weak and even as bad as the Sox are playing now, they won't lose a series to any NL team. I believe the Sox don't have to get hot for long, just for two series. Get a handful of quality starts in the ALDS and ALCS and BAM, another parade. This is why I strongly believe Contreras needs to be put on the DL so he can be rested, a little healthier and ready to give his team 4 Contreras-like starts in the playoffs. Cortisone is a miracle drug, allowing a hurt pitcher to pitch a complete game shutout the day after taking it. Two weeks of rest + a couple cortisone shots in Contreras's back the day before two of his playoff starts = Contreras's peak performance.
  16. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) For everyone that b****es about the starters pitching too much (and there is a good case here...) ask yourself why... it's because the pen's not much better. Our pitching all the way around is the problem, and we're just trying to get through games right now. The good news is, so is everyone else. Ozzie has no idea how to use a good long man. The back of the pen has been fine all year, and BMac alone could have bridged the gap to them.
  17. QUOTE(Wealz @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 08:47 PM) Guillen will get them to the post-season. Whichever team hires the Great Tom Kelly in the next two weeks wins the World Series. QFT
  18. It's pointless to compare BMac to the Garcia of 2005 because Garcia is a much worse pitcher in 2006--the year in which people have been stating BMac should have been starting over Garcia. If Garcia performed in 2006 like he did in 2005, nobody would be suggesting BMac start in place of him.
  19. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) Does it equate to post-season and big game experience? That's where the Sox stand now. I like McCarthy, but people around here treat him like Mark Prior. McCarthy doesn't have to be savior or as good as Mark Prior. He only needs to pitch better than one of Freddy G or Javier Vazquez for the team to benefit.
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) All of which make him a very valuable trade piece, btw. If Logan can come up behind him and do a decent job...Cotts can turn into something very useful next year. Ok, you just convinced me.
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) What a shocker, it was against a NL team. Awesome.
  22. Looking forward to PFB getting pwned by another doctor today...
  23. If Thome doesn't hit that 2-run home run drawing the Sox to within one run, I don't think Freddy starts the bottom half of the inning. I think OG sent him out to get the win instead of playing for the team's win. OG is playing favorites at the expense of the team's good in September during a pennant race.
  24. QUOTE(cgaudin @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:04 PM) Lots of you folks out there should slow your McCarthy kool-aid consumption. He wasn't that impressive out there. Overall, this can't be put on Freddy. He pitched good enough to win. Sox just couldn't wake up the bats today. Brandon McCarthy is a better pitcher than Freddy Garcia.
  25. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) While Ozzie is not a great manager, I would like to make a list of players I would like to see wearing different uniforms next year. 1) Pods 2) Freddy Garcia 3) Juan Uribe 4) Neil Cotts 5) Javy Vazquez *** Joey Cora would be #3 except he does not count as a player. I'd hold on to Neal because of his 2005 season, age and salary.
