  1. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 20, 2006 -> 04:38 PM) Anybody read Chavez' speech transcript. Can't say I agree with him, but I loves me some oratory! He calls the UN worthless, calls Bush "the devil", complains about the smell of sulphur, cites Noam Chomsky repeatedly!, invites everyone to Venezuela, and talks about how most of his delegation isn't allowed out of the planes that took them to the US. That's some speechifyin! http://www.drudgereport.com/flash2.htm This should have its own thread, IMO. Bashing America is a regular occurance for the anti-American Hugo Chavez. He called this country a "terrorist state" and recently began agressively stockpiling arms and teaming with other Latin American countries to ally against America. Does anyone know how long Chavez can remain in office as Venezuela's President? Pat Robertson was right. If I were Reinsdorf, I wouldn't have allowed Ozzie to bring the trophy to that American-hating POS.
  2. QUOTE(GaelicSoxFan @ Sep 20, 2006 -> 01:32 PM) I just don't see that Ozuna is much of an upgrade over Pods. I like the fact that Ozuna hustles. But hustle can only make up a little bit for talent. The only reason why they acquired Pods in the first place was they wanted speed at the top and their best prospect, Jerry Owens, was two years away at the time. NorthSideSox72 was asking why you think Podsednik is better than Ozuna and why you would take Pods "any day over Ozuna."
  3. QUOTE(VAfan @ Sep 19, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) Though it aint over till its over, or until the fat lady sings, I'm ready to write my postmortem to the 2006 White Sox at the risk of being perceived as a fool if, by miracle, they rebound. Why did they fail? Here's my list. 1. Poor starting pitching. This was supposed to be the strength of the club. But, aside from Jose Contreras's early run, and Jon Garland's excellence from June forward, the starting pitching has been pretty damn bad. Mark Buehrle does not resemble a pitcher worthy of a contract extension. Freddie Garcia no longer has a fastball. And Javier Vazquez developed an uncanny ability to get torched in the 6th inning of every game he pitched. Not to mention that Contreras was also getting beat regularly once his streak ended. The result was a staff that even a huge jump in offensive production couldn't compensate for. (At one point in a 2-1 9th inning lead against Boston, I wrote that we hadn't won a game since mid-June scoring less than 4 runs. Jenks promptly gave up the lead and we lost 3-2 in 10. Last season, we bookended the first and last games of the year as 1-0 victories.) This is a good idea for a thread and I agree with most of your points. I would like to mention that Mark Buehrle was very good in the first half of the season and earned his All-Star selection. He didn't fall apart until the July game against the Cubs when he gave up 7 runs in the first inning. IIRC, he had around a 3.42 ERA at the time.
  4. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 19, 2006 -> 02:05 PM) that's the first thing I thought... yeah, im disappointed the sox are blowing it... but 2005 World Champions will always have a great ring to it! nice signature. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Sep 19, 2006 -> 03:20 PM) Yeah, maybe Konerko will raise his voice a little bit. Hell, he may even resist the urge to shrug his shoulder. You can't light fires under the asses of players when they're practically zombified. Even though I wasn't one who took offense to the banner, your avatar is awesome.
  5. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 17, 2006 -> 06:12 PM) and fewer people trying to keep it alive very nice.
  6. QUOTE(MSHAWKS @ Sep 16, 2006 -> 06:10 PM) I agree. I should be upset, but I feel liberated. I sometimes state I've given up on this team, but I'm shackled to them. I won't be liberated until their season ends.
  7. QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Sep 16, 2006 -> 10:00 AM) Since he is admitting that his fastball just isn't there for him, can this finally end the stupid talk on this board that he has been choosing to throw softer on purpose? Finally. QFT. Those who believed that were very naive.
  8. With Minnesota playing tomorrow, and the Sox having the day off, I'm excited to see the .5 game differences disappear. I like whole numbers.
  9. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 13, 2006 -> 08:37 AM) Thank you. The thing that rips me, aside from friction and whatever the hell physical force tore my knee apart, is that we were undefeated going into today's game, and now I can't be there for my team. Cortisone?
  10. I'm not an optimist, but this thread sucks. We've got a puncher's chance.
  11. QUOTE($I Need Money$ @ Sep 12, 2006 -> 08:41 PM) you act like ba is god. BA is a better offensive and defensive option than Mackowiak. Do you disagree?
  12. I'm still pretty pissed at the situation our team is in. We had a sizeable lead over Minnesota at the break, and pissed it away with extreme quickness.
  13. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 12, 2006 -> 01:18 AM) And thats exactly what Ozzie did, Thorty was up and ready. Thorty, I like that.
  14. 3.0 games back of Detroit and 1.5 games back of Minnesota with 18 left to play.
  15. QUOTE(beautox @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:24 PM) will know really quickly if hes got it. .........
  16. QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 10:38 PM) Give me a break. The closer closes. He failed! Case closed. It's all on Jenks. I hesitate to put much blame on injured players.
  17. QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) I'd want to know how many shots he could have over a 30 day period, and how long each shot would last, before speculating. Wells explained this in his book, stating the effectiveness of the cortisone shot diminishes as shots increase. It got to one point for him where he became virtually immune to it, not feeling the relief he got from every other shot. I don't know how long each shot lasts, that's something I'm curious to know too, because I want to know how many Contreras will need to get through October.
  18. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 10:56 AM) Look, no matter what you say, there is no way in hell that the 2005 team wins the World Series without Ozzie Guillen. I don't care what kind of spin you want to put on this. >>> Back to the point. Ozzie Guillen's vision of rebuilding the White Sox was the reason the team was even put in a position to win the division last year. It was Ozzie Guillen who demanded that Kenny reconstruct the roster around what he wanted - with more speed at the top of the lineup. Sure, KW went along with it, and made the moves, but as I understand it, the impetus was from Ozzie. And even though Podsednik basically sucks now, he was the catalyst of last year's lineup and a true leadoff hitter is the reason why we were able to succeed with players like Carl Everett and a one-legged Frank Thomas DHing. It was that style of play that won. Not Carlos Lee and a bunch of right handed beefcakes taking batting practice. Love him or hate him now, Ozzie Guillen is the reason why we got Freddy Garcia to re-sign in Chicago. Without Freddy, we don't win the series last year. It was under Ozzie Guillen's managing that Garland was able to finally live up to his potential, something that Jerry Manuel was never able to have faith in. It was Ozzie Guillen who kept the team's motivation up. Whatever that means, you cannot deny that the team last year NEVER quit. There are several more reasons why Guillen was invaluable. Suddenly now, he's the worst manager to ever don a uniform and people are calling for his head. Yes, he has made some atrocious decisions this year. But to discount his impact last season is ludicrous. Absurdly ludicrous. He may not last even one more season in Chicago, but I will never, ever for a second believe anything else but that Ozzie Guillen was one of the most important reasons the White Sox ever won the World Series. Everything had to go right for us to pull that off. And that includes the manager being the manager. It honestly sickens me to read some of these posts. You make some good points, like helping construct the World Championship roster and getting Freddy G, but that doesn't mean he's the best manager for the 2006 Sox or any future Sox team.
  19. I think Jose Contreras is hurt and is still pitching because the Sox are in such a tight playoff contest. His start last night versus Boston was so dominant that during the game I wondered if he received a cortisone injection to mask his pain. In David Wells's book, Perfect I'm Not, he stated that all of his best-pitched games with Toronto in 2000 came after an injection of cortisone. He called it a miracle drug that allowed him to pitch complete games and do so with great stuff. That's the reason Gord Ash traded him to the Sox after the 2000 season, because he knew why Wells's stats looked so good--information I'm sure he didn't share with Kenny Williams. In Contreras's last three starts, he's lasted 5, 2 2/3, and 5 IP with 8 strikeouts total. In Boston he went 8 IP with 9 strikeouts. I think Contreras's was given a cortisone shot because of his injury, recent bad performances, and tight playoff race.
  20. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 05:43 PM) He is? Where did he say that? Ozzie is stating that his speed will be more valuable so concentrate and work on that. He is not saying to stop hitting for power. You are looking too much into it. I don't see anywhere in that article where he tells him to stop hitting for power and stop working on hitting for power. He is just stating to concentrate on wokring on the speed game. What is wrong with that? Ozzie Guillen on Brian Anderson: "I told him he's got to go to winter ball and [decide to] be a power hitter or a baserunner. Either you go deep or steal bases." STALLONED
