QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 11:50 PM) Well according to DJ last night, the problem with Richar is that after he came to the bigs he started all of a sudden pulling everything, but not to worry because he has been working with Greg Walker. I love it when a hitting coach has people like Uribe who cant hit a lick, yet he feels the need to "work" with our young line drive hitting guy. On another note, KW needs to really concentrate on what he can put on the bench next year. Ozzie's propensity to overplay his "toys" really creates chaos and ruins games. Example A is why in the world of f*** is Grinderstand and Pods starting all of the time. Its another case of lets sprinkle some poo on the field and hope it turns to fairy dust. If the Glass brothers are on this team next year, our manager will start them. Whether it's Erstand and Pods or new faces of the same ilk, Guillen is going to have his boys. So the solution is to get rid of Guillen. Guillen values speed in a leadoff hitter more than OBP. It's poor philosophy that hurts the franchise.

The $138 Million Dollar Man on the North Side...
shoota replied to wilmot825's topic in The Diamond Club
I thought Soriano signed a $136 million contract with the Cubs, not $138. -
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 13, 2007 -> 07:55 AM) In your own words after his 1st start---"I never said he was done. In fact, I said the opposite." Did you also think his career was over on May 21, 2007, when Jose was 4-4 with a 3.71 ERA? Jose still has major league stuff, from what he showed in the bullpen vs. Sea-the kind of stuff that made him the best sox pitcher through most of 2005 and 2006. Good catch on the quote I had saying the contradictory; I wasn't expecting anyone to read that far. To be most clear, I stated Contreras's "effective career" instead of simply, "career" was over.
-
After only one Contreras start this season, I started a thread asking if his effective career was over. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but toot toot. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...=57807&st=0

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) Just like Mike Jackson and his 1000 career appearances You can thank KW for Jackson being on the roster that season. I remember Jackson was outplayed in ST by one, maybe two relievers, but I forget their names.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 07:20 PM) And this type of thinking is flawed because the manager has no control over the players[sic] execution of any called action Incorrect; posters were criticizing Guillen for his decision to have Fields bunt instead of Owens stealing, NOT for having Owens steal second unsuccessfully. -

QUOTE(striker62704 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) How about dogging Thome, Kornerko and Pierzynski? They all had a chance to tie the game. All they had to do is get a single off Joe Fing Borowski. This team, even though they tease us with wins, is still full of losers. This type of thinking is flawed because hitters are challenged by a pitcher trying to prevent them from getting hits, while there is no such obstacle for a manager--he is free to make field decisions as he desires. -
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:39 AM) The interesting thing about Glavine is that he won 20 games 3 times before turning 28, then only won 20 twice after that. Based on age, Buehrle is actually slightly ahead of Glavine at this point in his career with no 20 win seasons. He would need to average 14.5 wins a year until age 41 (13 seasons). If he gets a couple of 20 win seasons or even a couple of 18 win seasons, he would have a shot. It just sounds like he does not plan on pitching beyond 35 with the comments about even winning 200. A better article would have been "Contreras says he won't win 100".

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 02:34 PM) I saw a girl at a game a year or two ago wearing a very tight shirt that said... "I'd kneel for cotts" Some guy at a Cubs game had it on earlier in the year.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:42 PM) Haeger I believe at least has options left. In other words, if Floyd bombs this year, Charlie comes out next ST as next in line since Floyd walks, and Charlie can spend part of the year in AAA until Garland walks if needbe. We're not in the hurry on Charlie that we are on Floyd. +1 I also agree with the idea of Guillen holding back the reigns on his other starters.

Bonds's Giants are back on the road for the next 6 games. Could make for good tv watching the crowd response if he hits his next two on the road.

Hopefully this rumor is true and opens the door for Tom Kelly to swoop in and save our Sox.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) You just asked earlier in the thread why he had to keep him under contract with an extension, your thread title asks the same "why", that's why I answered as I did. Those were the reasons. That is true.
-
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:52 PM) What is Contreras bounces back and pitches effectively for this or maybe another team. You have written his career off, you may be right but you may also be very wrong. Since results are the best indicator, if Contreras pitches well in 2008 and 2009, KW's signing looks good. As of now, horrible.
-
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) I suspect you may not like the answer but here it is, first of all he was signed through 2006. Williams and Hahn wanted to lock up their starting staff to manageable contracts because the financial cost of starting pitching was (still is?) spiraling, going up big time. I'm aware Contreras was signed through 2006. Whatever KW's thinking or rational for signing Contreras is irrelevant to me since that reasoning has been proven wrong. I'm not concerned with how KW came to the conclusion that it'd be wise to lock up Contreras for the next four years, just that he did. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Further it was my impression at the time that his agent would not have accepted a two year extension. Everyone else was getting 3 years. I'm sure there are some what if's and why's in there but these were the basic reasons behind it. It's impossible for us to say whether Contreras would have accepted an extension through just 2008, but assuming he wouldn't, KW is still at fault for locking him up for the next four years. Had KW let Contreras pitch out his contract through 2006, the Sox would not currently be stuck with Contreras this year or for the next two.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Anyone that says that this is a horrible deal is not giving context to when this happened. Contreras was our ace, he was the guy who started every playoff series. In the 2nd half of that year, through his DL stint the following year he was one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. In his starts right before he went on the DL, he had some of his most dominant performances, including bnack to back double digit strikeout performances where his fastball was 97. 17 game consecutive win streak. If we had traded him, you and a bunch of people would of been up in arms over it. You are talking about a pitcher, that KW coveted, that was his ace. This was a good move at the time. No one suggested he should have been traded. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Now I dont know if he is hurt(if it is, I dont think its a shoulder or arm more likely his back). He can every so often explode to 94. Guys with shoulder, elbow issues have a drop of velocity and they dont have it come back. When Jose goes over the top, he gets better velocity and better life to his pitches. When he drops down, his ball sails, and his velocity and command go south. I personally think, its a few things going on. Not just one. Now am I concerned that he will be an expensive pitcher, without the results sure. Do I want him traded now. Sure. But I dont know too many people who were Johnny on the spot after the 05 season and wanted him gone. You're making this an either/or situation. There were more choices other than trading Contreras or signing him through 2009. I'm not questioning KW for retaining Contreras after the 2005 season, I'm questioning why he had to keep him under contract for the following four years.

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) ^^^^^Really good win today. Why throw this out there right at the time of the win? Look at the times on the thread creations. One person was posting the winners thread...and we have this one rehashing things we already know about. I didn't even watch the game today. I'm at the point anyway where I feel little difference between Sox wins and losses. I'm already looking at 2008.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) It'd be pretty fun to read the Contreras contract extension thread here again But yea, there's no point in worrying about this now. It's already been done, and the team's stuck with it. Why bring it up? Because it has the potential to negatively affect the Sox for the next two seasons?
-
On April 1, 2006, KW gave Jose Contreras a 3-year extension covering the 2007-10 seasons. I understand Contreras pitched exceptional through the 2005 Championship season, but why would KW be motivated to keep him under contract for the following FOUR years? With his age, and JR's unwillingness to approve long-term contracts, why did KW give a three year extension instead of two? It's obviously backfiring on the Sox today, with an ineffective, injured, aged Contreras signed for two more seasons after this one. Horrible move KW. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/press...sp&c_id=cws

Fields = a cheaper Crede with no back problems
shoota replied to Hideaway Lights's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 03:14 PM) Wha...???? Now listen... I agree he should have researched having the surgery more than he did.. but to call him an attitude problem because he chose to not risk possibly ending his career is ridiculous. Crede has one of the BEST attitudes on this club. As for Josh.. give him time. Brandon wasn't a smart ass punk right out of the gate either. Crede's attitude problems don't stop at his selfish refusal to have back surgery, but include his refusal to play winter ball at the team's request. After his dismal 2004 campaign, (.239 BA .299 OBP) the Sox asked Crede to play winter ball to improve his regressing skills. Not only did the surly Crede shun the request of his employer to improve his game, but his response when asked by a reporter was something like, "There's no reason for me to play winter ball now because there's nothing more I have to learn." -

I really enjoy watching a starter pitch a complete game, but it's also impressive to watch a pitcher battle 8 innings and let his closer pitch the 9th for the win. Javy had a nice game today. -
