  1. It's from -I believe- a Radiohead video. There's a guy laying down on the sidewalk in some big city and people are passing him. One guy stops to ask him what's wrong and he refuses to say. More people gather and keep asking him. He tells them they don't want to know. Eventually he gives in and says something (but it's muted so you can't hear it). The camera changes view and everyone in the city is lying on the sidewalk with him, dead. edit: ok maybe they're not dead.

    AP exams

CS125 is a decent class, but you won't learn anything new.
  10. This coach is an ass. Tell the kid to shut up, cut his minutes further, or just remove him from the team if he's a problem.
  11. Zach, it wouldn't be able a teaching walking in and saying "guess what, homosexuality is GOOD" or "hey jimmy the gay kid, you're an evil sinner". There is plenty of material on ethics that could be presented objectively.
  12. I wouldn't mind seeing a general philosophy class which could include a section on ethics at a jr high or high school level (elementary might be a bit early and hard to fit in). I would also be fine with it including religious topics as long as they were presented in a fair manner. Perhaps we were on a different wavelength before, JUGG. I don't see how just having kids pray teaches them anything. Trying to get kids to conform to some standard of behavior works better when it can be explained why such a standard is valuable. Discussions on ethics could do so.
  13. Isn't this something that could be done by a school board or other group in the educational heirarchy? Wow. I didn't think you meant that cops would show up at the school and take the guy away. Some asshole kids who hate their administrators could have fun with that. What about something like this: 1) Admin suspends kid. Parents have access to phone number of higher official to which they can give their story and file a complaint. 2) Official calls the admin and gets their side of the story (further investigation ensues?). If suspension was bulls***, admin is warned/suspended/fined/whatever and kid is immediately reinstated. If not, the kid stays suspended. I suppose a problem might occur where the official would tend to side with the administrator rather than what the parent says. However, in your version, I think it could be a waste of police and court time.
  14. Then such a tradition should be pushed, but in a way which was open to all students. As I probably need to do about the marriage statistics, one needs to look closer than general statistics about schools too. There are tons of schools which are doing great without any prayer sessions or Christian preaching. Other factors are clearly in play. There was a lot of change in the 60s and to put all failures -and no successes- of subsequent decades on "the Godless" is a bit much. Are there any other trends in such data?
  15. Any child suspended for actions such as those should be immediately let back into school. The administrator should be required to justify the suspension by showing how the student was disruptive or otherwise harmed the learning environment. I think it would be a good idea to make some nation-wide precedent that administrators should back the f*** off, but I'm not sure about making it an actual crime. What would the charge be? I voted "Yes with stipulations."
  16. Of course he's a hero, but the amount of media coverage he's gotten is way too much, particularly since I doubt he would have wanted any of it.
  17. barna Yes, Catholic and Lutherans were at the bottom with the nonreligious as 21%. Catholics also tend to be more liberal (and less likely than say, Born-Agains, to want school prayer). That's a real nice outlook. f*** the minority. All you have to do is explain why these activities cannot be done outside of class. One can reinforce positive principles without having them be distinctly Christian. You have 30 years of correlation, not causation. Problems among youth can be attributed to many things. To single out a lack of religious indoctrination is ridiculous. lol. Where the f*** did these come from? What was Jesus' commentary on the American welfare system?
  18. What a waste of 3 minutes. There is plenty of time before school starts, during breaks, during lunch, and after school for children to congregate for whatever religious activity they choose. There is no need for it to be during class.
  19. The 1999 Barna (who is a Christian) study on divorce showed that born-again Christians (Baptists in particular) had the highest divorce rate, while Atheists/Agnostics had the lowest. I was referring to the fact that people of less education (high school or less) tend to be the most religious, while people of more education (college grads or more) tend to be the least. Gimme a break. You expect me to believe all these little kids are really into the religion their parents give them? I don't buy for a second that a group of 3rd graders are going to walk into class and be like "oh please teacher can you give us a lecture on Christianity today?" And anyone who might vote against it and lose then pays for the school to teach one religion to their children. Oh I forgot, somehow the county is going to build a new segregated schoolhouse for the people who don't want that.
  20. I think if the majority of the community happens to be racist, they should be able to fit their schools accordingly. As long as over 50% of the students don't mind (which they probably won't because at this age they'll believe whatever their parents believe), then each morning 1 minute will be taken out to have a cross-burning and to proclaim that them colored folks are inferior.
