Fish or Cut Bait - players who are Rule V eligible
scenario replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 13, 2009 -> 01:35 PM) Marquez hasn't had success at any level in years. Whatever concerns their are for him are very much warranted. He was a reach even before this year. What are you talking about? The highest ERA he had at any level in the minors, until he got hurt in 2008, was 3.65. In 2007, he looked very good in AA... at 22 years old... good enough for him to be rated one of the Yankee's top 10 prospects. But the last two seasons (2008-2009) he's had injury issues. So, I don't get why people are treating him like he's garbage. -
Amazing to think that Texeira jilted the Angels and had a great year with the Yankees... But that the Angels didn't really miss him... Because Kendry Morales stepped up and almost matched Tex's production. Morales finally delivering on the potential have talked about for so long was a huge factor in the Angels' success this year.

Fish or Cut Bait - players who are Rule V eligible

I know Marquez has been a popular target because of disappointment with the Swisher trade... But outside of the injury issues, I'm not sure it's warranted. In spring training this year, he was throwing in the low 90's and had nice movement on a couple of his pitches. A potential starter who can do that has some value. So, IMO, it's worth at least one more shot to see if he can be rehabbed and salvaged. He needs another pitch though. Hopefully, the organization can help him develop a cutter. -
Don't be surprised if the Gameday doesn't work as fast as expected. I've found that the info during offseason games updates MUCH more slowly than during the season. Like... sometimes the data doesn't show up AT ALL until the game is over.

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 13, 2009 -> 10:14 AM) I hope Retherford does really well in this league. I wonder if he could catch and be an emergency 3rd catcher if Flowers and Pierzynski are in the same lineup. How's his arm? He has a good arm. In junior college (and when he started at ASU) he was a pitcher. But his coach at Arizona State said he thought CJ might end up as a catcher if he made it to MLB. Bottom line is the kid is a ballplayer... can play pretty much any position... and did in college. In fact, in one game he both pitched and caught in the same inning. LOL.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 13, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) That's sort of interesting - I wonder what the reasoning was. Trying to decide whether he's worth protecting before the Rule 5 draft I would guess. He's sort of a special case, since they just converted him to pitcher this year. Even though his stats are underwhelming, the Sox must see something they like... they moved him through several levels in the system this year.

I don't see Viciedo getting much if any time at 1B with Dustin Ackley on the team. And the outfield is loaded. So, it looks like he's going to be primarily at 3B this fall. Hmmm... It'll be interesting to see how things play out if he impresses in the AFL.

Looks like Sergio Santos has replaced Henry Mabee on the roster.

FutureSox Post-Season Top Prospects List
scenario replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Santos Rodriguez could be talented enough to make the list... but he's 21 (turns 22 in January), seems likely to end up as a reliever, and just played his 3rd consecutive season of rookie ball. Doesn't help that he's walking over 5 guys per 9 innings either. Add those facts up and he gets bumped off the top 25 in my opinion. -
Young, Studly, Under Team Control Outfielders

I still think Aaron Cunningham would be a really nice pick-up. He's under the proverbial radar... a spare piece in the Oakland outfield... Start by offering them Josh Fields. Add another player if necessary. -

QUOTE (vasox @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) Well, here is another link that can keep the conversations going: http://minors.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/10...f_the_year.html That was a damn good post. I really like enjoy seeing Jonathan Mayo say... "Are these the only 10 pitchers worth talking about for this? Maybe not... That being said -- and again, this is only my opinion -- you're going to have a hard time convincing me Daniel Hudson is not the Pitcher of the Year." -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) can i get a cliffs notes on this page. The CliffNotes version... A couple of posters suggested that Fernando Perez in the Rays organization might be a good pickup. KHP thinks he sucks and invoked the names of DeWayne Wise and Brian Anderson to make his point. And in general, the level of testosterone in the thread is above average high today.

I think Japan might be a very good option for him.

Discussion: Project Prospect's Top 25 pitchers

QUOTE (son of a rude @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:29 AM) As far as im concerned, Feliz has already proven himself in the majors. 1.74 ERA, .677 WHIP, 39 strikeouts in 31 IP. He can easily be one of the best closers in the league. And in AAA, he had a 3.49 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 75 strikeouts in 77 innings, and a respectable but not great 2.5 to 1 K/BB ratio. Could he be the next big thing? Maybe. But from a prospect perspective, I'll take a guy who has #3 starter potential over a reliever any day. Also don't be overly influenced by the results of Feliz's 20 major league games played in September-October. Yeah, it was impressive, but a 3.9 BB / 9 innings average in the minors suggest that a larger MLB sample will probably bring him back down to earth. (ala Carlos Marmol) -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 04:30 AM) Hudson above Neftali? That list loses all credibility right there. Not necessarily. Feliz has a big arm but still hasn't harnassed it yet. (He's averaged almost 4 walks per 9 innings in the minors. That's not going to cut it in the majors.) Meanwhile, Hudson strikes out just as many as Feliz, but has much better control. And the big plus for Hudson which propels him up so many lists has been the development of his changeup. Pitchers with plus changeups tend to do better in the majors than those without. And Hudson has a better changeup than most of the players on the list. That plus a good fastball with late movement... great combo... which is why he moved up so fast this year. -
Rosenberg's column today... funny and quite good. My White Sox treasure-him-or-trash-him list for next year: Jake Peavy -- Your table is ready. . . . Mark Buehrle -- Always and forever. . . . John Danks -- Connect the dots: Pitching faster = pitching better = $$$$. . . . Gavin Floyd -- If Bert Blyleven wasn’t a Twinkie guy, he’d be the perfect tutor for your curveball. Whatever, if you ever figure out consistent control, you’d be a no-hit threat once you take the mound instead once a month. . . . Freddy Garcia -- The Sox picked up his option, but fans now sweat more than he does. . . . Daniel Hudson -- The Miss America runner-up: If for any reason Freddy Garcia cannot fulfill his duties . . . Bobby Jenks -- I’d still take him as my closer. . . . Matt Thornton -- Love him in the eighth inning, not convinced about him in the ninth. . . . D.J. Carrasco -- Any role. Any inning. Any questions? . . . Carlos Torres -- Yawn. . . . Scott Linebrink -- Kill me now. . . . Octavio Dotel -- Spanish for Scott Linebrink. . . . Tony Pena -- Too often looks like Dotel on training wheels. . . . Scott Podsednik - What does it say when a guy who’s bad on defense and worse as a baserunner considering his speed is the best this team can do at leadoff? . . . Gordon Beckham -- The Sox found their Jeter. . . . Alex Rios -- He made Brian Anderson look like Albert Pujols, which makes you wonder if he cycled off steroids or is just a party animal hindered by baseball’s amphetamine ban that prevents players from recovering chemically from the night before. . . . Paul Konerko -- A pro, a leader, a consistent rebound year. But if he waives his no-trade clause, tell him to leave his “C’’ in Beckham’s locker on the way out. . . . Carlos Quentin -- More homers and RBIs, less Blue Cross and Blue Shield. . . . Alexei Ramirez -- The lights are on, but nobody’s home. . . . Jermaine Dye -- Exactly the type of pro you want in your clubhouse, but sorry, it’s over when you’re going to be 36 and you’re 0-for-after-the-All-Star-break. . . . A.J. Pierzynski -- Batted all over the lineup and still hit .300, but really, shouldn’t he have more RBIs than Miguel Olivo? And is it every pitcher’s fault he can’t throw out anybody? . . . Chris Getz -- I didn’t appreciate him as much until he came back from injury. . . . Josh Fields -- If he could hit, Beckham could move to short, and Ramirez could be traded for a leadoff hitter. . . . Jayson Nix -- Nice power, nice versatility, nice bench player. . . . Brent Lillibridge -- You still here? . . . Dewayne Wise -- Can’t hit, but he’s one of the few guys who can catch the ball. . . . Mark Kotsay -- Infield, outfield, offense, defense, love the guy’s contributions. . . . Tyler Flowers -- Not yet. . . . Ramon Castro -- Someone has to catch on Sundays. . . . Ozzie Guillen -- At least one manager in town is honest and cares. . . . Kenny Williams -- It might be something good (Peavy) or it might be something bad (Rios), but it will be something big, and that works for me. . . .

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) Who from the AFL will KW trade for this year is my question. Typical Kenny thinking would be to look for a pitcher with heavy sink who was a high draft pick but seems to have fallen out of favor with his current team. Besides that, I'd figure him to be looking for a potential bullpen pitcher or two. In a perfect world, we'd find a young fast outfielder who could lead off too. I know that's asking alot, but I figure... when you're creating a wish list, start out by aiming high.

Miguel Cabrera got drunk with Sox players Friday night?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) Is is true that Dombrowski bailed him out? Because that's awesome. He had to. Think about it... Cabrera got home at 6am. He was picked up at the police station at 8am. Miggy was still drunk. No way he could drive. And no way his wife was going to come get him. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) I wonder, if guys from our team were somehow encouraging this...whether that might reflect badly around the league on our guys Nah... I don't think so. With the additional info that has come out, it appears Cabrera has some personal issues causing the problem. Unhappy marriage, etc. -
Miguel Cabrera got drunk with Sox players Friday night?
scenario replied to scenario's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Friday's little outing is beginning to look like the tip of the proverbial iceberg... Tigers warned Cabrera after bar altercation in August, reports show Mike Martindale / The Detroit News Birmingham -- During an altercation at a Birmingham bar in August, Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera allegedly mocked a teenager about his weight and challenged a man to a fight in an incident that resulted in no criminal charges but prompted Tigers management to order Cabrera to avoid the bar, according to information provided to The Detroit News. But Cabrera apparently returned to the Townsend on Saturday, police said, in the hours before he returned home drunk and got into a fight with his wife that prompted a call to police. Cabrera was taken from the home by police but not charged. A representative of the Tigers told police that Cabrera admitted he lost his composure on Aug. 31 in the Rugby Grille at the Townsend Hotel and blamed it on his recent batting woes and marital troubles with his wife. He had just gone 1 for 14 against Tampa Bay and told Tigers officials his wife had returned to their native Venezuela. On Saturday, Cabrera's trouble began at 6 a.m. when he returned home with a blood-alcohol level that was three times over the legal limit for driving. The $14 million-a-year ballplayer allegedly upset his wife, Roseangel, by waking his 4-year-old daughter as he talked on a cell phone when he came home Saturday morning. After a brief struggle, she called police from an upstairs bedroom, Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said Monday. "I need help please ... ," a sobbing, barely coherent woman whispered to police in a 911 phone call reviewed by The Detroit News. Police later took Miguel Cabrera from the home. In the August incident, according to the information, a man told Birmingham police that he and an unnamed teen encountered Cabrera at the Rugby Grille on Aug. 31 about 6:30 p.m. Cabrera allegedly asked the teen, who weighs about 300 pounds, "What's up, big boy? You need to work out," according to the information provided to The News. The teen then asked Cabrera to stop taunting him and said, "Let me be." But it became confrontational, the man told police: Cabrera allegedly challenged the man and the teen. "Let's go right now. I'll fight both of you right now. Let's go outside." At one point, the man told police he felt that Cabrera intimated that he had a gun, saying he was going to go to his vehicle and get his "click-clack" and making a motion with his hands that he interpreted as the racking of a handgun. Richard Fenton, the Tigers security representative, told police that he later searched Cabrera's vehicle and did not find a weapon, and he said Cabrera indicated he did not have a gun. The incident prompted the Tigers to hold a meeting with Cabrera, General Manager Dave Dombrowski and a team lawyer, Fenton told police. It was then that Cabrera was told to stay out of the Townsend. If the Tigers win tomorrow, the drinking incident will turn out to be a relatively small story. But if they lose... It could get ugly. -
http://blog.mlive.com/cutoffman/2009/10/re...ra_parties.html Looks like Ozzie pulled out all the stops to win that final series. LOL. October 5, Detroit Free Press reports: Miguel Cabrera parties with White Sox, drives home with .26 blood alcohol level. Fights with wife. He gets scratches and bruises on face. 911 is called. He gets picked up at police station by Dave Dombrowski at 7:30am. Miguel Cabrera might be the Tigers' first baseman on the field. But off the field early Saturday morning, he was one of the boys out too late with his buddies, according to the Birmingham Police. The buddies were players from the Chicago White Sox, who Cabrera was partying with after Friday night's game at Birmingham's Townsend Hotel, Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said. But when he got home, his wife wasn't happy he'd been out drinking so late, Patterson said. Roseann Cabrera called 911 at 6:05 a.m. to report the two were fighting, according to reports. But after investigators determined both Cabrera and his wife were "aggressors" in the situation, Patterson said, the first baseman was released. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski picked Cabrera up at the station between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Saturday, he added.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 04:04 PM) Ya I have to feel bad for David Cook. He's been getting the ultimate screw job it seems for alot of opportunities. I find it hard to understand why he was sent back to AA this year after absolutely destroying Southern League pitching in 2008. Just makes no sense to me unless there was someone in AAA they felt HAD to give playing time to instead of Cook... which obviously was not the case given the utter garbage we had in Charlotte most of the year. I'd love to hear someone in the Sox player development system give us the real story.
