  1. It'll be interesting to see who the Sox send to the AFL this year.
  2. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 06:01 PM) You guys are operating under feeling. You feel like Chris Getz can make these improvements. The fact is throughout his professional career, he hasn’t. Look at the numbers. Generally, People don’t learn better plate discipline at the major league level. Chris Getz is who Chris Getz is. He’ll hit you .275 and OPS around .700. what’s at question is: do you want this guy on the roster over a guy who will walk more, hit more homers, and save about ten more runs than him on defense? The only clear advantage for Getz is that’ll he’ll steal you about 15 more bases than Nix. Who's operating under 'feeling' here? Your analysis should say: "People don't learn better plate discipline at the major league level. Nix is who Nix is." Getz had more walks than strikeouts in his minor league career (165 walks and 142 strikeouts in 1428 at-bats). Nix had 302 walks and 675 strikeouts in 3250 at-bats. The small sample of major league at-bats you're using to make your point does not provide the basis for a meaningful comparison.
  3. No doubt that Nix has more power than Getz. But using the numbers from their rookie seasons in the majors to make other comparisons is misleading. Getz has had a MUCH better batting eye over the course of their professional careers. It's not even close. And except for the year he was pushed ahead (2006 when he went from low-A ball to double-A) and struggled, Getz's offensive production has been consistently better than Nix. Yeah, Nix had a very nice year in AAA last year... but it was his THIRD consecutive year in AAA. And Getz's only year in AAA was substantially better than Nix's first two years there. That said, I like Nix's power. And if he proves he can hit well enough average-wise with consistent playing time to not create a hole in the lineup, I could see him earning a shot at the regular job.
  4. The frustrating thing about Contreras is that he's either brilliant or horsesh*t and there doesn't seem to be any in between. I think we should say a special prayer to the baseball gods that he have one last brilliant stretch that allows him to end his (and Thome's) WhiteSox careers on a high note.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 10:48 PM) He's got a bit of time, but if he is to become a right handed Granderson/Sizemore, like I've seen on here a time or two (though no one has declared him), he's going to have to cut down on the K's. If he is to become a right-handed Granderson/Sizemore, then he's going to have to start hitting from the other side of the plate.
  6. Random Scott Podsednik Stuff.... an article from Hardball Times "In his last 33 games, Scott Podsednik’s hit .258/.313./341 for an OPS of 653. For comparison, Josh Fields as a year-round OPS of 655 which gives him an OPS+ of. . . . 68. So that’s Podsednik over the last month. In his first 19 games with the team this year, Podesednik hit .268/.303/.324 for an OPS of 627. Based on the OPSs and OPS+s of Ramon Castro and Josh Fields, I reckon that works out to an OPS+ of 61 for Podsednik. In between those two stretches, Podsednik played 36 games in which he hit .340/.401/.455 for an OPS of 856. That’s Gordon Beckham territory right there, for an OPS+ of about 118. So, putting it another way: 19 games: 61 OPS+ 36 games: 118 OPS+ 33 games: 68 OPS+ And of course the year before he had an OPS+ of 68 in 93 games. It's a damn good thing for the Sox they just got Alex Rios. They managed to get about half a season of what was overall respectable production from Podsednik (.295/.349/.387 on the year thanks to his hot spurt) without needing to use his season line completely crashed to earth."
  7. QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 10:16 PM) Kanny loses, 8-3. Griffith wth a poor outing and KW Jr. continues to not be able to hit. It's kind of crazy when you think that our #1 draft pick, the best athlete in our minor league system, and our projected leadoff hitter of the future is being displaced in the one hole by a guy hitting .242 with a BB/K rate of 14/64. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...ox&did=milb I agree that we should have Mitchell batting leadoff, but... Just wanted to point out that KW Jr. was 12/21 in his last 5 games before tonight.
  8. KW Jr. went 4-5 with 4 RBI's tonight.. He went 3-5 with 1 RBI last night. 7-10 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI's in his last two games?? I don't know what got into him, but I like it.
  9. One of the things many fans are not aware of with Poreda... He can hit high 90's when pitching out of the windup... but not out of the stretch.
  10. Who was reporting that Nunez was hitting 96-97??? Not anyone here that I'm aware of.
  11. Charlotte vs. Louisville Mobile @ Birmingham Winston-Salem postponed Kannapolis @ Lake County Serafin with the start. (His first since getting recently promoted.) Missoula @ Great Falls Danville @ Bristol
  12. QUOTE (Jeremy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 09:39 PM) No, more than that but you guys are missing the point. It's not that Fields proved he belonged as a reserve, it's that if Getz rebounded when given some more time to get it together, then Fields might have also. Compare their splits on a month-to-month basis and decide whether you still have an argument.
  13. Charlotte over Louisville 3-2 Carlos Torres with a very nice outing... Birmingham postponed due to rain. Winston-Salem over Potomac 5-0 Justin Edwards threw 7 innings of 3-hit shutout ball. Kanny lost 5-3 Great Falls at home against Missoula. Bristol wins 1-0. Freddy Garcia, Phil Negus, and Santos Rodriguez combined on a 2-hit shutout.
  14. Getz had himself a very nice July... .324/.373/.441/.815... And did a nice job today of carrying it over into August... 3-5 with a double, two stolen bases, and two runs scored.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:20 AM) But maybe my source is wrong cause everything I'm reading tonight indicate it was the exact same trade. I swore I saw someone else confirm a while back that Broadway was a part of the trade too. ^^^^^ I could be hallucinating but I thought Broadway and Hudson were #'s 3 and 4 in the original offer.
  16. Charlotte over Syracuse 8-5 Great outing for Harrell... 8 innings; 1 run on 3 hits; 5 K's and 2 BB's. Link was not so good... gave up 4 runs in the 9th. Flowers 3-4 with 3 RBI's. Barons lose to Jacksonville 7-1. Viciedo hit his 10th homerun. Winston-Salem loses 4-1 Not much positive to talk about in this one. Kannapolis wins 5-3 Missoula @ Great Falls Bristol postponed due to rain DSL WhiteSox lose 7-6
  17. Mark Gonzales' Twitter updates * Ramirez on bench starting to rotate ankle and walking from dugout to tunnel under his own power. 12 minutes ago
  18. Charlotte @ Syracuse Egbert pitching Birmingham lost to Jacksonville 9-3. Decent start by Ely, but Ricky Brooks imploded in relief and the offense didn't show up. Kinston @ Winston-Salem Tied 3-3 after 5. Morel with 3 hits including a homerun. Kannapolis beat Rome 3-2. Leesman with the win. Great Falls @ Helena Collop pitching Bristol game postponed due to rain.
  19. Williams looked pretty good in spring training. Almost pitched his way into coming north with the team IIRC. I don't expect much from him though and will be thrilled as long as doesn't suck in the few appearances he will end up seeing.
  20. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) And DeWyane Wise. He's destined to stay with the organization and eventually replace Greg Walker.
  21. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:39 AM) This can't look good to potential free agents if they hear a lot of White Sox players asking to get traded. So... two guys who can't hit well enough to stay on the major league roster ask to be traded... and the team works to oblige them... And you think that's going to have a negative impact on potential free agents? Highly doubtful.
  22. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 07:25 PM) that BHam link is to the charlotte game fixed
  23. I'm not assuming that the rumored roster moves are true yet... This is Cowley we're talking about here.
  24. I can just imagine the board angst if Q goes back on the DL to create a roster spot for Kotsay.
