QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id...0/daniel-hudson I'll amend it, one really good, one so-so and one terrible. To say a game when you're taking an 8-3 lead into the top of the 5th inning and trying to get through it for your first major league win in your debut is "terrible," well, the team ended up winning the game 15-5 (against KC), so he didn't hurt the Sox...performing well enough for them to win in 2/3 games, which is all you can expect out of a rookie call-up. First off, it wasn't his major league debut. Secondly, a big lead and you get 4 innings and 5 runs out of your starter is not so so. It is turrble. Third, he wasn't trying to get his first major league win. That occurred the season before. Other than just about everything, your post is spot on.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 12:28 PM) And Beachy's not a great example because the innings he could provide in the 2nd half could be contributed from a number of other sources. There's just no reliable track record with pitchers coming off so many injuries. The last thing the White Sox would want is a "rehabbing" pitcher thrown into the heat of a pennant race when every game counts. Their patience lasted for 3 Daniel Hudson starts, for example...and 2 of them were pretty good, actually. 2 of them were awful, actually. The other one turned out OK, but he was a bit wild. He all of a sudden became lights out as soon as he was traded.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 10:54 AM) The team actually lost money last year. Source. JR said they were turning a profit. As for 2013, Forbes said they lost money, but I read where they included Abreu's signing bonus after the season into their figures. It's been a very profitable team over the years if Forbes is to believed. Their current spending suggests they don't "just get by". That said, I still don't understand how someone could be the slightest bit upset and play the cheap card over Brandon Beachy.

Brandon Beachy has pitched 111 innings since Ozzie Guillen was managing the White Sox, and has pitched 30 innings since Kevin Youkilis played 3B. It is fascinating anyone really would think he is the answer.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 09:18 AM) The point guard is almost always the release in those late shot clock situations. If somebody on the wing is bottled up under 10 seconds left, the pass is back to the top of the key for a reversal (assuming there isn't a post feed available - and on this team, there isn't). Likewise, Tate is always going to be the open man there because teams aren't trying to deny him the ball. So if the options are (1) forced shot; (2) turnover; and (3) pass to Tate and hope, you pass to Tate and hope... That's the problem with Tate generally. Unless he becomes at worst a 25% 3 point shooter, he's a career backup at best. Also of note, I was 100% sure Nunn's three was going in with 38 seconds left. Wednesday just became a lot, lot more important... need to win @ Iowa City. One thing college teams suck at is panic as the shot clock winds down. In the NBA it is at 2 or 1 and guys are calm they still run the offense, good shots occur. Once it gets down to 8 in a college game, panic sets in. It seems very rarely do they get a good shot if they let it get under 5.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 22, 2015 -> 02:11 PM) the innings, the work load, having 2 solid starters, having sale as your ace, is a nice recipe for success, but i would rather have just 1 more certified ace to help, in case. none of these pitchers threw extra innings b/c a playoff run. If Jose Quintana threw 95 and had exactly the same stats he has had, he would be considered ace like. If Samardzija is what everyone hopes, and Rodon is what many expect him to be, that is almost as stacked as it gets.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 22, 2015 -> 11:56 AM) I doubt Bochy would face criticism for that. He'd face more criticism if he tried to save his pitcher for years later with a World Series on the line. Those don't come often, when it's there you throw all you've got. I don't know much about Bumgarner's history, but I do know Sale's. I don't think there are many pitchers physicsly capable of doing what he did durimg the 2014 postseason. The way Sale has gone, and the fact that people are up in arms when he throws 115 pitches in a game, I don't think, especially if you want to baby through the regualr season, he would be able to do something he has never done. It would be like putting Derrick Rose on a 25 minute limit for the entire season, and once the playoffs start, lifting it and expecting him to be fine for 45 minutes a night. I know in sports, copying others routes to winning is pretty common, but this particular one is pretty unique. To expect or rely on any pitcher coming close to duplicating Bumgarner's 2014 postseason isn't a recipe for success.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) Abso-f***ing-lutely. That's the point of all this, winning a title. Get him there and he can do that. Getting him there is the challenge. But what if they did that and they lost and Sale was never the same again? Getting to the playoffs is a challenge. Winning the WS a bigger one for sure, but you have to get there to have a chance. Bumgarner threw 52 postseason innings last year. It paid off. But what if the Giants didn't win? I would bet there would be people saying Bochy throwing him out there so much was dumb. He is going to get his days off during the season. How many times has he pitched since becoming a starter on less than 4 days rest? The answer is less than one. Anyway, if the White Sox make the playoffs, it probably means Samardzija was really good and Rodon was good. I doubt they would have as many 2 and 3 inning performances in the postseason from their starters as the 2014 Giants.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2015 -> 10:13 AM) This is a guy who has been an MLB starter for 3 seasons and has missed games complaining specifically about elbow soreness in 2 of them. At the least it's a worry enough that we shouldn't try to push him so hard we find his breaking point. Yet you suggest if the White Sox make the postseason, they push him like Madison Bumgarner.

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 22, 2015 -> 06:35 AM) Really? Popovich seems to have made that work for him. I'm more interested in what the manager is doing and what is happening on the field. Some people do like the Ozzie style press parties. Popovich doesn't have to sell anything. The White Sox do. Not only to their fans, but to their players. I don't really know if the organization expects to win. Hahn said himself at Soxfest they still are not where they want to be, but they have to think they can win.

QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) I think Pax thinks the FO stability is more important than the coach if it comes down to it. He might be right, especially if he believes that our talent and tradition can attract whoever the next best coach is. From what I have heard, Pax is lukewarm about Thibs, and that your statement is pretty accurate.

We should hear today just about every player is in the greatest shape of their lives. The had Gillaspie on CSN yesterday. He drove 18 hours straight from Kansas and arrived yesterday. Why wouldn't you break that up a little bit?

Jose Quintana, who is 4 years younger, has twice as many at least 3 WAR seasons.

Samardzija Extension?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 08:16 AM) The market next year isn't really THAT amazing. It might change a bit, if Greinke becomes available. Price is likely to stay with the Tigers (at least better than a 50% chance). That leaves Zimmerman and Cueto as the two premium options, which is essentially the same as Scherzer/Lester/Shields...once again, unless Greinke is also on the market and all four of those top guys are free to sign anywhere in the offseason. If you include Samardzija as well, sure, it's better...but there are still 20 teams chasing the same 3-5 pitchers. Latos and Fister will be lucky enough to gather the "table scraps" remaining, ala Shields this year. Stop with your made up percentages. The fact is there are 5 or 6 guys that are looking for 9 figure contracts. There are a limited amount of teams that will give out those contracts. Hammels ends up in Boston, they may not be looking to spend, as their "sabermetric" payroll is about $200 million. Unless his ERA is under 2.00 and he wins the Cy Young, there is zero chance Samardzija gets anywhere near $28 million a year for 5 years. No chance.

Samardzija Extension?
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 09:23 PM) I'd guess 5/140ish with an option if I was a betting man. That is crazy. The market will be flooded with pitchers next offseason if no one extends before that. Price, Zimmerman, Cueto, Latos, Fister.... He won't command anywhere near that on the open market.

Cafardo's manager ranking
QUOTE (brett05 @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 06:18 AM) Like I said we shall see. That phrase seems hard to understand on this board but I have some hope. It seems hard for you to understand what you claimed to have seen, as the evidence has shown, simply isn't true. Yet you continue to ignore it. I wonder what your thought process would be if the evidence had actually shown you were correct and others took your point of view that the facts didn't matter.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) If he was bought out, wouldn't he get the minimum? If he was willing. If someone offered more he probably would take that. One thing about the NBA with waived players, teams that guaranteed money have to pay the entire amount. It's not like other sports where they pay the amount minus the minimum the new team is picking up. If you get waived on a guaranteed contract in the NBA and another team signs you, you just got a raise. That's why these guys are OK with getting bought out. They feel they can make at least most of the money they are giving up somewhere else.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 12:20 PM) Fox was asked if there is a player to build around on defense. He said Kyle Fuller, he mentioned Jay Ratliff second. That is interesting. Brad Biggs was on something a month or so ago, and said Ratliff was probably going to hit the road. He said he didn't play enough because of injuries. I guess he was wrong.

QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 11:19 AM) I would be just as happy with him. Goff always acts as if he loves his gig though as you probably should play off to the public as a professional. He loved his gig in Atlanta too so I dont know. Its a long shot but I have a feeling. Feder just started following Goff on Twitter. That would normally seem kind of odd IMO. For some reason I don't see Robert Feder as a sports guy.
