2014-2015 NFL Football thread

Fox is going to be more expensive than Quinn. One reason Phillips and George for that matter, IMO shouldn't be asking football questions and interviewing these guys is because of money. Once they get it in their mind Fox will cost x more than Quinn or whoever, the non-football guys start getting involved in football decisions. Accorsi should interview them alone before Pace was around, and then Pace and Accorsi. If that's their guy, then bring the money guys in. I have no idea if this really is a factor now. George did say money wouldn't be an issue. I would just not be surprised if it is. -
Anyone see this? The Brewers are selling 1000 "Timeless" tickets for $1000 each. It comes with some sort of placque, plus 9 tickets good for any regular season game besides opening day, plus a ticket to any game you want, which could be a Tuesday night battle with the Padres or the 7th game of the WS,with the opportunity to purchase 3 more at face value. Seems a little expensive to me, but if you think the Brewers are World Series bound for the rest of your lifetime, it may make some sense. I wonder how much time in advance you have to make your selection.

Obviously, Trestman was in over his head, but what is the Bears record this season if Fox and his entire Denver staff happened to be coaching them? -

Does a successful 60 year old guy want to coach under a 37 year old first time GM and have no power regarding the roster? Does the 37 year old new GM want to give up some of his newly acquired power to a coach that, looking at it negatively, has been canned twice? From what I heard, Pace wants to talk to Quinn, which would indicate to me, Fox isn't his perfect candidate, and Quinn probably is a longshot to coach the Bears. Who really knows? Fox might be named the new coach in 5 minutes. -

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 15, 2015 -> 08:38 AM) This is all leading to the Bears signing Doug Marrone. On the bright side, that is still an upgrade. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) I actually went and googled some background on the deal. It does look like you are right here. This is the first one I saw that did it without being an arbitration award. It appears that the fun part could be this generating a grievance as the release has to be performance based, and we all know who Dayan's agent is. If he hits well in Spring Training, he would probably be more attractive to other teams. If he doesn't, Boras' case doesn't look so great. It would be interesting to follow, but these don't seem to go public unfortunately. I am sure JR would get a kick out of winning a grievance vs. Boras. That alone might be worth the guaranteed portion of the contract to him.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 03:25 PM) Minor league filler Still, you think they could do better than a guy who couldn't hit 5 years ago. The last time he faced pro pitching. I think he may be going to Soxfest. Maybe his "fee" is doing him this solid. I expect him to be cut in AZ. -

I liked BA more than most, but the one question I have about this is ...........Why? He isn't going to be better now. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 03:11 PM) He talked about how he felt Belisario was unlucky but he couldn't validate extending the offer. He also hinted Belisario would have success this year. His traditional numbers don't look good and he was used out of the role he should have been in. Like I said when they signed him, if this guy sucks, people will HATE him. He has clown antics, he's silly looking/overweight, shady guy, visa problems, etc. If he looked and acted like Scott Carroll he'd be more likely to get the benefit of the doubt. He was being nice. He could have signed him for the same price as this year. If he really was so sure he would be successful in 2015, he would have brought him back.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) I went to 20-25 games and surely watched way over 100 with the addition of DVR. Is this a pissing match? A significant amount of Belisario's balls in play found holes. I wonder how many games Rick Hahn watched because he has echoed my same sentiment on Belisario. LMAO. Rick thought he was so unlucky, he non-tendered him, yet he gave Viciedo a contract.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) Dumb question, but is it possible Viciedo made mechanical changes to improve against RHP which ultimately affected his ability against LHP? It's just amazing how much he's regressed against LHP over the past two years. There seems to be so few non White Sox LHP. He only had 151 PA vs. lefties. I just think he was going bad when he was facing them. As I have stated a few times, I do think they will trade him, but if not, see where he's at in spring training. If it looks like more of the same, let him go. He obviously has ability, but so do a lot of guys who never really make it.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) How many catchers does Houston have now??? Unless Gattis isn't going to play catcher for them. Corner OF or DH? ALL. THE .CATCHERS I think he will be playing another position. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) Then why didn't Adam Dunn get released for 30 days salary? He was on a multi-year, guaranteed deal. When Viciedo becomes a free agent he can gain the upper hand and get that kind of deal, or if he is good enough the team wants to buyout his arb years like Sale, same deal. As long as he is going year to year before free agency, he will be subject to termination pay. The exact same thing happened to the White Sox new utility man last year. He signed a $3.5 million contract to avoid arbitration, and was released: Ken RosenthalVerified account @Ken_Rosenthal· Bonifacio clears waivers at 2 p.m. ET tomorrow. At that point would become free agent. #Royals would owe him about $575K in termination pay.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:54 PM) He was tendered a contract. He didn't sign it. He decided on arbitration. He and the team negotiated a separate deal outside of arbitration. Yes, but he was tendered a contract. Every player signed to a contract has been tendered a contract. The offering of arbitration is tendering a contract even though no contract had been offered. You must be arguing to argue.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:50 PM) He didn't sign his tender deal. He and the team signed a new deal at $4.4 million. He was tendered a contract. A non-tender becomes a free agent. Do you really want to say Dayan Viciedo was not tendered a contract but signed a contract for $4.4 million? You do realize that does not make any sense don't you?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:39 PM) Viciedo wasn't tendered a contract. He also has a contract for the next season now. You can only tender contracts to pre-arb players and to players awarded deal through arb. Otherwise the Sox could have terminated Dunn's deal for 30 days salary in 2012, and there is no reason under God's green earth this wouldn't have been done. He certainly WAS tendered a contract, or else he wouldn't have had anything to sign. And if you go down further, you will see that a contract for the "next" season would be 2016. People wouldn't be playing in spring training if they had not signed a contract for the 2015 season. Dunn's contract was guaranteed. The guys signing multi-year contracts are usually guaranteed. Except for guys like Sale and Q, the guys that have their arb years bought out with multi-year deals, the pre-free agent guys all pretty much could be terminated in spring training or before, and only get a partial amount. I am 99.9999% sure the contract Viciedo signed can be terminated.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 10:10 PM) Blowing a 17 point lead to an 0-4 Minnesota team, even on the road. Inexcusable. Mentally weak. McCaffrey's one season away from being fired, as they're unlikely to improve much with White graduating. I am posting this anyway while breathing a huge sigh of relief. Went down by four before eventually pulling the game out. Would have been a season killer IMO. OSU (for first place) at home, at Wisconsin and at Purdue the next three. Would take 1-2 and hoping for 2-1. Considering Fran just signed an extension, your one season from being fired isn't very accurate. But their play in the second half of games for a season and a half now, has to be a concern. If they actually played well in the second half most of the time, they probably would be ranked right now. He seems to be finishing runner up for a lot of recruits. He did recruit his son who I think is a sophomore in HS. It seems laughable, but the kid is ranked high for sophomores, and might be his best recruit. Fran and his wife were both pretty good college players, so his gene pool might be good. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) I don't have your past posts at my disposal? I just don't see why you need to keep bringing up Paulino. Downs was one of the most consistent LHRP in baseball when he was signed. Paulino was signed for peanuts and at least had a decent arm. Belisario was incredibly unlucky in 2014 and while he's not a feature arm in the pen, whoever signs him on the low will be happy with that pick up. FWIW, my only gripe this offseason is the money they spent on RP. It's one school of thought on building a bullpen, just not the one I subscribe to. So were not in complete disagreement. I went to about 50 games in 2014, and watch probably over another 100. If you want to say Belisario was incredibly unlucky, fine. I don't agree. But, if you want to base things on the saber stuff saying unlucky, guess who else you would have to consider unlucky in 2014? Dayan Viciedo.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:12 PM) Every source I am reading very specifically states the arbitrator awarded contract is not guaranteed, and the player can be released for only 30 days or 45 days worth of his salary, depending on his exact release date. If you have proof otherwise, I would like to see it. Here is the Basic Agreement. Go to page 33 and 34. I am certain the same type of guarantee applies to the contract Viciedo signed or it really makes little sense not to go to arbitration. http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:08 PM) Again, only if an arbitrator awards a contract is this scenario true. The Sox are currently on the hook for $4.4 million. You are not correct about it having to be awarded by an arbitrator, but you may be correct about him being guaranteed the entire amount, although I doubt it. He may have signed a guarantee, but usually these guys with the one year deals do not. There is some sort of 45 day or 90 day payout if they are released at a certain point.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 12:54 PM) The big difference is that there was playing time available for the other guys to show whether or not they were worth anything and I'm not sure that's available for Viciedo. If he returns to his 2012 "Hitting lefties very well" form there will be, but if he continues his 2014 "not hitting anyone" form, I don't know why you'd even use him as a pinch hitter. If Viciedo shows he can hit at least lefties, playing time will be found. Or, if things are going so well, a guy who can hit lefties can't find playing time, another team will have a spot. If he can't hit, he won't play. It will hurt you as much financially as Scott Downs did in 2014. Jeff Keppinger will be getting paid more to go fishing. I still think he winds up on another team.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 12:33 PM) Hindsight is a valuable tool. ? For a guy who says I mention Paulino more than his mother, you would think you would know all hindsight did is validate my original thought about him. Again, the Sox spend $9 million on a 40 year old LOOGY, a non tender middle reliever from the NL, and a guy who pitched about 20 innings in AAA the season previously after surgery. Betting under a $1 million , and at most $4.4 million on a 25 year old guy who can hit the ball a mile is no greater risk. In fact, IMO, it is far less risky. Paying Zach Duke $15 million the next 3 years based on 40 or so really good innings in 2014 blows that risk away, yet some who hate Viciedo, gave that signing kudos.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 11:31 AM) You may talk about Felipe Paulino more than his own mother. You're not risking 1 million on a lottery ticket. You're risking the 1 million to get a potential return in trade. Maybe they end up keeping him, but it won't be a great expenditure. There's no role for Viciedo on this team. Why pay him 4.4 million to sit on the bench? The guys you mentioned were all paid less and had clear cut roles. And we have learned over the years that the line up that starts opening day is usually the one that is there game 162. You are still taking a shot Viciedo figures it out. I still think he will get traded, but there is at least as much of a chance he will help you win in 2015 as there was with any of the 3 guys I mentioned, when no one seemed to have a problem with the Sox spending $9 million on that crap.

If the players are bad, the defense will be bad, no matter who is coaching. Maybe not Mel Tucker bad. A good offense would also help the defense. Offensively, even with Cutler back, a new coach should be able to get that group to score more points. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 10:15 AM) I do think it's one of the worst jobs available. I'd rate it Broncos 49ers Falcons Buffalo Bears Jets Raiders Then you would have to expect the Bears to get at best, the 5th best coach in the pool. The problem I have with Hub is he will emphasize how unattractive the job is, but then moan when this unattractive job doesn't produce the hiring of the best coach in his mind. I am not so gung ho about Fox, but I think he could be a good "bridge" coach. From what I heard yesterday the Broncos don't think Gase is ready. Fox could bring him with, and maybe he is the ultimate replacement.
