QUOTE (LZPride08 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:46 PM) i was hoping kenny would get an offer for Dye over Thome, I was hoping Thome would finish his career here The problem with trading Dye is if you do, his $12 million next year becomes guaranteed, and if you bring him back, he has a full no trade.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) Damn. I'll miss Thome. Hopefully Kenny laid the groundwork for him to go to a contender, and maybe to come back next year. That's what I think it is. They probably picked up as much money as they are allowed, probably will get a PTBNL depending on his contribution and the team's success, and could still sign him in the offseason. Basically, they are throwing Thome a bone to go to a contender because it obviously isn't happening for the Sox this year.

It appears Thome may have been traded but must wave his no trade.

QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) Williams didn't accompany the Sox to Minneapolis. Special assistant Bill Scherrer is here, as is a Detroit scout. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....up-for-now.html I wonder what Detroit would want from us. He's scouting the teams as the still play the Sox 6 times and probably still have Minnesota.

This little tidbit from Gonzalez makes a Dye trade even more unlikely IMO Dye's contract also states that a team that acquires him must pick up his $12 million option.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) What was Ozzie so pissed about that he had to go out there? The call or the ump chirping at AJ? he called him a punk ass motherf***er.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) ....or maybe not. atleast not according to him flowers ''I've seen plenty of catchers on other teams, and I believe wholeheartedly that I'm better than them behind the plate. Unless he's outstanding defensively, it makes a lot of sense to move him away from behind the plate if his bat lives up to its billing. Guys like Mauer and Rodriquez were good defensively so moving them out didn't make as much sense. An average defensive catcher who can pile up huge numbers offensively should switch positions if possible.

I really think, and again I may be wrong, this news may be more about Peavy than anyone else. If the Sox win tonight, and the pitching match up is favorable, the Sox would be 5 back with a month to go. Not ideal, but not as crazy as some other times KW thought he had a chance. The Sox are holding off the Peavy announcement until after the game. He's not saying anything until the announcement. Has KW ever "given up" only 5 out with an ace about ready to enter the rotation? It makes no sense. Hopefully, I'm just very wrong, but if I'm not, I hope its nothing in Peavy's elbow that will threaten anything more than the rest of this season.

QUOTE (Cowch @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) Well Konerko would actually have some kind of decent return I'd assume, but after trading Allen I don't see why we would do this.. Tyler Flowers has 1b/DH written all over him.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:40 PM) Maybe if we offered Liney and one Chevy Pride girl some team would do it. If Chevy drops their sponsorship like JR predicted, the Pride girl would need something to do. The bottom line is there is a 99.9% chance the Sox big names are going nowhere.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:34 PM) what AL team could possibly use Thome? The Rays perhaps? And the Giants could easily use Dye. I think Linebrink stays. The way JD has been playing, Chico's Bail Bonds couldn't use him.

QUOTE (RME JICO @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:33 PM) Even if a team blocks the waiver from a contender, can't the Sox just dump the player on that team? Just getting Linebrink off the books would be a win-win situation. Yes. But the odds of someone claiming Linebrink are very slim. Of course I thought no one would claim Wagner.

Considering this came out this afternoon, this suggests the news on Peavy must not be so good.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) I'd be willing to bet that Dye and Thome leave tonight. Why shouldn't a team take a chance on Linebrink too? Some teams "Coop" might be able to fix him... Let the rebuilding begin... Lets bet. No one wants to pay these guys what they get, now, not even the White Sox. As far as Linebrink goes, I think unless someone is willing to take his entire contract, the Sox should hold on to him. He is still throwing hard, he can't throw an offspeed pitch for a strike. He could have a Cliff Politte bounce next year. Of course its a huge if and if someone wants to assume the contract, send him out.

QUOTE (Cowch @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) So who are some teams that would even want these guys? I almost don't care about the return. That is a problem. I do suppose the Sox wouldn't mind saving some payroll this month and would give these guys away. Playoff money is due Sept. 2. They aren't going to get much. It will probably cost them any chance of significantly raising ticket prices. This roadtrip has been more devasting than just a few losses.

Who's With me?
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 05:57 PM) 1995 and 2007. Those have been the two most pathetic White Sox seasons I've had to endure since I became a fan in 1991. I watched as many games as I could. Even when they were 20+ games out. I'll never understand the "I ain't watchin' this team anymore because they're playing like s***" garbage I hear around here. How is that any different from a token bandwagoner? Even during the bad seasons, I can't help but watch in Sept. Spring training is too far away.

Jake Peavy Update Thread
They are going to announce the results of Peavy's x rays after the game. It would seem to me if there was nothing wrong, it would be announced right away. I hope I'm wrong. Peavy will comment after the results are released.

It Just Got Worse

The Ozzie Guillen job approval/disapproval poll
Ozzie hasn't been great this year, but when he has to leadoff Wise and Nix and Lillibridge and has to call in Linebrink or Williams, has to watch Fields flail away at another fastball as the catcher is throwing it back to the pitcher or has to send Contreras to the mound right after he said he's out of the rotation, you can't pin the blame on him. As crazy as this sounds, I've actually warmed more to Ozzie this year. He's not getting or taking the credit for things he doesn't deserve credit for, and I think he's picked his times to pop off pretty well. As bad as this roadtrip has been, it may be good for the White Sox in the long run. Perhaps they realize they really aren't all that close to where they want to be. They aren't as good as they think, and I'm not talking about the players.

Blame Game
QUOTE (jphat007 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 05:57 PM) The fact that he would spend 11 mil or whatever for Rios and not pony up for a guy like Hudson to have the entire year both confuses and infuriates me. I totally agree with this. Hudson was there for the taking, and the only way you had to pay him $8 million this year was he had to perform. The Sox had no money, started crying about the Dodgers series attendance, then go on a spending spree. Somewhere, someone was BSing. While I love the Peavy trade, for this year, the Sox are going to pay him $4 million for nothing, and Rios, while not nearly as bad of player as he has shown since acquired, he's actually a pretty nice player, is no $60 million guy. So the Sox are locked into him. It could be worse, they could owe Soriano $90 million more. Overall, we've been talking about the window for this team for years. We have been on borrowed time for years. The middle of the line-up, the heart is made up of streaky power guys who are station to station. Until that is changed, the White Sox are going to be inconsistant scoring runs. The White Sox also need to place a premium on catching the ball. KW is talking now of knowing the defense would be poor. Well, if you knew that and expected that, your expectations about winning a WS are ridiculous. The White Sox are a below average team. Peavy next year is a big improvement, but the bullpen has turned into a disaster. Do you pay Jenks his arb number? Pena, Linebrink, whoever else is out there in 2010 has to step up, or it will be the same thing all over again. If they were in the AL East and had to play 18 or 19 games against Boston, and Tampa and New York and even Toronto, they would easily be a 90 loss team. You couldn't say that in 2005 or 2006 or 2008. Its been a failure from JR to KW to OG to the coaching staff to the players. They have failed. All of the above would be my choice in the poll.
