  1. QUOTE (son of a rude @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 09:22 PM) UZR is the best statistic for judging defense at most positions. Range and getting good reads are the most important part of fielding IMO. And using UZR ratings Alfonso Soriano was a premiere defensive LF 2 years ago and an average to slightly above average one last year. Range is a hard thing to judge without eyeballs.
  2. QUOTE (son of a rude @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 09:18 PM) So because the White Sox don't sub in Nix late in games, that means that he isn't much better than Getz defensively? That is extremely stupid. All the statistics say that Nix is a much better fielder. You can keep thinking that he isn't just because the white sox don't sub him in late in the game. You put way too much stock un UZR ratings. Nix has made plenty of gaffes this year in the field.
  3. He'll clear. He's owed $2.7 million the rest of this year and a $1 million buyout. I don't think many teams want to pony up almost $4 million for a closer for 45 games. Especially one that has not pitched in the big leagues for a year.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 08:04 PM) Nix is also pulling his own weight defensively, walking, hitting home-runs, and essentially doing everything, but hit for a high average which is a statistic that is pretty much meaningless given that he’s doing all of the aforementioned things. The numbers don’t lie. Nix is the better player, by a fairly wide margin. I don't care how many hits per AB's he has. I care what he does with the hits that he has. Getz was helping the Sox before he got hurt. I think he's the better player. One thing to keep in mind, its pretty doubtful Nix will maintain his home run pace.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Not good enough how? He makes rookie mistakes? Yes, cause he's a rookie at the position. Look at his upside, good range, great arm, great height and reach. He will be a plus SS before the end of next season, there is no doubt in my mind. Konerko has saved him at least 10 errors this year, maybe 15-20 if someone like Frank Thomas defensively was at first. He has upside. I don't understand how they can't get him into a better position for DPs. Its not all on him, but his lollipop throws in the dirt are something he needs to stop. He's good when he's concentrating, which he does during big ABs. I just think he drifts from time to time and a lot more than he did last year. When that happens, Ozzie needs to sit him down.
  6. The Ricketts deal is going down soon. Its going to be interesting to see the new management style. Will he spend tons of cash? They have big time backloaded contracts they are stuck with. He's going to have to drop a lot of cash into a renovation. I just wonder how many new revenue streams will be available. I suppose they could buy all the bars in their neighborhood.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 07:32 PM) There could be one other issue...the fact that Floyd had a terrible opening to the season and didn't get in a groove until June. He pitched mostly on the Road during April and May; he pitched 1 game at home in May, 3 on the road, in those 3 games his ERA was 9. Those number of runs given up will skew your season #'s like mad. In June, his ERA was 1.63 at home and 0.61 on the road. Then his first 2 starts in July on the road he was tatooed. He's given up 5 runs or more 7 times on the road and 1 time at home. 3 runs a game is a huge swing. Whatever it is, I think it does show that pitchers can thrive at USCF.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) LOL, from the guy who continually finds reasons to doubt Floyd, now that he's proven you so very wrong, you come up with this? Travelling for work all the time sucks. It has an effect on people. Could also be what teams he has pitched against, or that maybe he pitched on bad hitting days at the Cell, who knows. ? All I'm saying is he's a flyball pitcher and check his splits. I offered perhaps one explanation for it. Consdering how everyone frets about a guy like Peavy coming to a "hitter's park", maybe checking White Sox pitchers splits might change an opinion. The fact is Floyd is an excellent pitcher at home, and pretty mediocre on the road. 2.38 vs 5.38. That's a gigantic difference, especially considering USCF's reputation.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) Exactly, Nix had 65 plate appearances at the major league level, and was sent down and then preceded to hit .303 in AAA with 17 homeruns and 51 RBI’s, thereafter he went on to contribute to the US Olympic team before having to drop out of the tournament after fouling a ball off his face. Yet you hold against Getz what he did the first 65 or so AB in his career. Nix is hitting .228. He's not very good.
  10. Ironic that on a board that has been b****ing for years and years about an "all or nothing approach" there's a thread about an injury to a guy who can do a lot of things being a good thing because it gives a prototypical all or nothing hitter more playing time.
  11. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 05:46 PM) While this is undoubtedly true it still makes an awful lot of sense from the team's perspective because buying production on the free agent market just isn't that cost effective. It's much more beneficial for a team in the long run to spend money on these draft picks because even if only one or two hit and become productive major leaguers you're still saving huge amounts of money over buying that production on the FA market. So I can't agree that too much money is being spent on them. And like Balta said, there's no guarantee that this saved money would be spent on bringing in veterans anyway. It depends what kind of percentage you can develop. It was well worth it for the Sox to pay Beckham the $2.6 million they paid him. The 7 figures they gave Broadway and McCollough they could have just flushed down the toilet and come out ahead. The $10 million they gave Viciedo? The jury is out on that one. Remember, it also costs the team a pretty penny to develop players.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 05:22 PM) Here's the thinking for all these unions; there's no guarantee that if you put a cap on money for draftees, the owners will take those moneys and reinvest them in veterans. It's just as likely that the owners will institute a cap and will therefore put somewhat less money in to the players overall. You're right, there isn't. But there is a guarantee that any money some 17 year old high school catcher gets, the guy in the union won't be seeing.
  13. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 11:31 AM) Hitters hit better at home and pitchers seem to pitch better at home...maybe that is what home field advantage means but I don't know. Floyd is a flyball pitcher pitching in a bandbox and has an ERA 3.00 a game lower at home than on the road. I remember reading an article on amphetimine usage in major league baseball. The article basically said usage was rampant and with it now being tested for, one of the effects could be better home records for teams as they will be sleeping in their own beds etc. and the road teams wouldn't be quite as alert.
  14. QUOTE (shakes @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 11:17 AM) You're not alone.... .....I'm sure Josh still has his. There will be several authentics on clearance at the next Soxfest.
  15. Contreras looked like he did when he returned from the minors. His stuff is still there, he right now is at the point when he was originally supposed to return. If he works quickly, he'll be fine. When he starts to dawdle, bad things follow. He's a far better option right now than Hudson, Garcia or Torres.
  16. I've been banging the drum for slotting for a long time. I have no idea why the union would oppose. Its more money for established players. If you draft a HS kid, he should be your property through his college days. Trading draft picks should be allowed. A world wide draft makes some sense but I think that will wait. It has to happen. Too much money is being given to guys who will be busts, and believe me, the majority of the guys that got over $1 million will not be productive major league players ever.
  17. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 01:04 AM) Razor Shines says hi. Razor was a good 3rd base coach. Unfortunately in 2007, he was pretty lonely.
  18. Ozzie on the Sox: ''We have to remember our ballclub in the beginning of the season was not a good one,'' Guillen said. "With all due respect, [early in the season] we've got [bartolo] Colon and [Jose] Contreras down [with injuries]. We've got Josh [Fields], Brian [Anderson], [Dewayne] Wise playing. I mean, please. ''But in the meantime, if I got a bet in the American League Central, I will take a good chance on my ballclub. Very good chance. Interesting. We always knew he thought Anderson sucked, but Fields and Wise?
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) Alexei is going to play himself out of this organization. You never hear Hawk this vocal about someone's effort. He's been on him for a while. His days as the White Sox SS are numbered. He has been sleepwalking through this game.
  20. QUOTE (Hanky Panky @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Rusty Kuntz should be pronounced "c***s" I was a little kid when he played for the Sox. That's how I pronounced it.
  21. Alexei should have been riding pine for his latest mental screw up. However, Lillibridge playing would just make a bad situation worse. I thought last year Alexei showed a pretty high baseball IQ. This year, it sometimes seems like he just started playing a couple of hours before the game.
  22. I'm glad Ozzie left Freddy in to get a win................Oh wait
  23. I don't know how giving a guy who has never pitched above college $15 million and about 50% more than anyone in that same situation has ever received a win, but I'm glad he signed. I wonder if he'll live up to the hype.
  24. KW says underachievers, per the Tribune: By Dave van Dyck Rain was falling as U. S. Cellular Field, delaying the start of a White Sox homestand Monday night against Kansas City. General manager Kenny Williams got the evening off to a pointed start by criticizing his team after a 3-3 road trip to Seattle and Oakland. "I'm not happy with the road trip," Williams said. "We lost two games we should have won, which [would put] us in first place by a half game. We've thrown away about a dozen games this year, where we would be where I thought we would be, which is in first place and in a good position "But we deserved what we got. I'm not happy with a lot of what I see. We're underachievers."
  25. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Aug 16, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) It was either Linebrink, Pena, or Jenks. No good choices, but Jenks was the best of the 3. Exactly. If any of the other guys were brought in and runs scored, people would wonder where was Jenks.
