  1. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) I honestly think that people are too focused on the one big error in the Cubs game in '04 (or was it '03?). But then, I also must admit I have not seen him play all that often, so I have to mostly go by stats, which are sometimes deceiving (and he doesn't have much time in at the MLB level). His stats don't seem to scream particularly good or bad to me - the ones I could find. In his brief tenure in the OF with the White Sox, I have seen him drop 2 flyballs, something little leaguers don't do. He can't throw, and he has no range. He is a decent defensive firstbaseman, but not exactly gold glove calibur.
  2. Borchard and Gload wouldn't net much in a trade. I would imagine if either or both get traded, it would be for a non-prospect or someone else's dissapointment, or they will simply be released.
  3. Frankly, I've considered Everett overrated ever since he came to the Sox. He did get some big hits during his time here, but his overall numbers aren't that impressive. He also looks heavy again this season, so I'm glad the Sox decided to go with Thome instead of him or the Big Always Hurt. It appears his definition of being a leader is having a big mouth. There have been many great leaders who aren't necessarily very vocal.
  4. QUOTE(Felix @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) He'll spend this year in AAA, but should be in the bigs by 2007 or so. I hope they send him back to AA.
  5. Does anyone think that although Cintron, who is being mentioned as a Uribe replacement if he went down, really maybe an insurance policy for Iguchi? The Sox have seen Iguchi really struggle this spring, I know he was working on a different swing, maybe the team is concerned about his current 0-for.
  6. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) Ben Gordon is a mother f***ing idiot If he wasn't on fire this game the Bulls would have never been in a position to win. Everybody's boy Hinrich got away with an obvious carry right before Ben threw it away.
  7. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 05:19 PM) I think the bullpen is set, and looks good. Lopez has been nothing short of impressive this ST. Walker was impressive at this point last spring training, he had allowed 2 hits in 7 1/3 innings over 6 appearances before getting lit up. Lopez' ERA was over 11.00 last season. I think KW needs to find an average lefty or a good righty.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) Well, IMO, that depends on 2 things...1 Baj's performance, and 2. your definition of a fleecing. If Baj works his way down to an ERA of 3.00 or lower at some point in the next few years, which he has the talent to do IMO, then this trade could look pretty fair. But if Baj can't get it below 5, getting anything for him is pretty much a fleecing. The White Sox troublespot is their bullpen. That Baj's area. If the White Sox had even the slimmest hope Baj could be effective, this trade would not have been made. Cintron is a luxury. They had a good bench before this move, now it has to be considered one of the best. Considering the dopes the Sox had last year riding pine, its a huge improvement. KW still needs to work on the bullpen.
  9. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:58 PM) If the White Sox had such a need for a utility infielder, you'd think a World Championship organization would have done something before mid-March. I like the deal, I like Cintron. I agree with you that Baj didn't have a place in this organization. My only real complaint is the money, and like I said from the start, I thought rotoworld made a good point: "Bajenaru was in the running to earn a spot on the White Sox as a middle reliever, but getting Cintron for him looks like a good move. Still, it's interesting to see that the team that was so hesitant to give Tadahito Iguchi even $2.5 million per season a year ago is going to pay $1.6 million for a rather average backup." Maybe you or your buddies at Rotoworld can name a few better back-ups since he is an average one.
  10. Cintron isn't a great player. If he was a great player he would be making a lot more than $1.6 million. He is a valuable player. He hits and can play several positions at least adequately. He is a bench player for the White Sox who will probably get a lot of playing time. To get him for someone the Sox were obviously going to send to Charlotte is a no-brainer. I still hope that KW has another move in mind to strengthen the bullpen. It is a huge concern of mine.
  11. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:23 PM) Why are we talking about my teams shortstop? Please, refresh my memory. I never once brought up anything in regards to the Red Sox. You did. My reasons for why this is not a fleecing and just an above average move were listed in my original post. I think it's a hefty dollar amount for someone of Cintron's caliber at his age, and considering he wasn't necessarily needed, I hate seeing Baj, a favorite of mine, leave this organization. Why is Cintron making $1.6 million considered hefty, but the Red Sox signing a guy with a .319 obp last year, who dipped to 5 homers from 23, perhaps from a lack of special vitamins for $3 million a solid signing? Guys like Gonzalez are going to soon make ticket prices at Fenway even more ridiculous than they are now.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:11 PM) All I'm saying is that what is a Red Sox apologist/homer doing on a White Sox message board? Trust me....we don't give a flying f*** about the Red Sox. If I have to hear one more time about how great of a guy Manny is, I think I might have to marry him. At one point, I think you legally could in Boston.
  13. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:05 PM) Get in touch with reality? Perhaps thats what I was hinting at when I told those people to calm down and to realize that this is a very mediocre player who makes a very hefty amount? Your post was uncalled for and just downright pathetic, which goes hand in hand with your track record here on soxtalk. I think many people would agree with me on that one. Hell, I bet Rock would even agree with me, regardless of how bias he thinks I am. $1.6 million is not a hefty amount anymore. It is well below average. This is a fleecing because the White Sox acquired a guy who can help them at the major league level for a guy who was never going to be a contributor. It really doesn't matter what Cintron makes, we don't sign the checks, and apparently the people who do believe they can afford him.
  14. I think its pretty clear, Baj has never been highly thought of as a pitcher by the White Sox. He was lights out in AAA and not getting the call up. His horrid start this spring probably cemented KW and Co.'s opinion that he is a career minor leaguer. Good luck to him. I think the Sox are going to trade for bullpen help. They really need it.
  15. I must say, this deal is highway robbery. Kudos to KW.
  16. I would love to see Pitino in the Big Ten. Hopefully IU will snatch Alford and Iowa can have a better future.
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 05:34 PM) I think he was in solely to keep Charlotte happy. Charlotte has been terrible in the W/L department the past few years and while that may not be a big deal to Sox fans, it is a big deal to the Knights and there attendance. I don't think they ever had any plans of Grieve making the roster. Hence Ruben Rivera and Bucky Jacobson. Maybe you are right about Grieve, but it wasn't that long ago he was a damn good hitter. You would think he would at least get to go through most of the spring with the big league club.
  18. QUOTE(Balance @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) While I understand it's tradition to do the "na na hey hey" song when the opposing pitcher gets pulled, I always thought there should be a requirement that the Sox knocked him out. There have been times when the opposing pitcher has been dealing, the Sox haven't really gotten to him, but the pitcher gets pulled, usually for matchup purposes. But it wasn't a removal because the Sox smacked him around. I always thought that jeering an opposing pitcher who's throwing a great game against us doesn't show us to be very baseball astute. Still, it's tradition, I guess. Someone mentioned this to Nancy somewhere and she said she understood but it was orders from above that had her playing it in the scenerio mentioned above. I think she only does one verse on an occassion like that.
  19. I thought they would give Grieve a better look. He does look like he is trying to shorten his swing. He didn't look good in the OF, but not many do in March in Arizona, and Grieve has never been a very good fielder.
  20. QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 05:14 PM) Iguchi had the most strikeouts last year in the least amount of bats.... do not forget him. Yeah, I think and hope with his moving down in the line-up, his totals will go down.
  21. QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 05:08 PM) Anderson is gonna be second on the team in strikeouts barring injury or if he gets benched for an extended period of time. If he gets 500 ABs you may be right, but he will probably not get enough ABs to overtake Dye or Konerko. Thome should have the K title wrapped up by Aug.1.
  22. QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Ever read mailbags or baseball america... how about baseball think facory? I remember there was a pretty good conversation about him there. His defense is not anything to write home about... but on the other hand it's not something to worry about. To be honest... he does not have many things he does extremely well. Anyone who says otherwise is just saying so to say so. Great swing... plus arm... what else? He is not very fast... have read his reads could be better... and i am not sure about his base running. He has a decent eye... about a .60 differential... but unless he developes serious power int he near future ( next couple years) i cannot see him as our starting right fielder in 2008. It's not that he just hasn't had homerun power... it is also gap power. I think he will improve defensely. Remember he is young and not only that, growing up in Iowa has limited his experience. As a 20 year old,he hit .298 in a park that isn't the easiest to hit in, even with 2 healthy wrists. I believe his power will come. He makes good contact. There are a lot more prospects with a lesser chance than Sweeney of being productive major league players, than there are with more of a chance. You are right though. Most prospects don't amount to much.
  23. QUOTE(q\/\/3r+y @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 04:26 PM) I do not see sweeney developing 20-25 homerun power anytime soon. You do not go from hitting one in a full season to hitting that many no matter how f***ed up your wrists are/were. Sure, he has two at this point... but realistically you cannot expect him to keep this up. He is just a mediocore fielder and has mediocore speed/baserunner from mostly everything i have read. While he is a good prospect i do not consider him a lock to make the big leagues... let alone be a start in just two full seasons from now. Jerry owens is a fourth outfielder that cannot play center... don't you want a fourth outfielder to play all three positions... and do it well? I also do not consider it a lock for anderson to outproduce rowands season from last year this year. Yes, i do know how bad rowands season was last year. Robin Ventura hit 3 homers at Birmingham in 454 at bats as a 22 year old. He develop 30+ hr power. Odds are Sweeney won't, but 20-25 is far from a longshot.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) Ummm, is there a chance Sweeney could make this team? I think even if he hit .800 with 15 homers this spring, the Sox should send him back to AA and let the kid dominate for a season. This is the one guy I have always liked, even with the lack of power thus far. He can hit and he can throw. I think he will develop decent power.
  25. QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 7, 2006 -> 02:51 PM) Weird.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060307/sp_nm/...XAwBHNlYwM3NTU- SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The death of Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett has brought to light his true age, which even the Minnesota Twins listed incorrectly his entire career. When the 10-times All-Star outfielder died on Monday in Arizona after a stroke, many fans learned for the first time that Puckett was born in 1960, making him a year older than that given by his team and elsewhere throughout his career. "We had it listed as 1961," said Molly Gallatin, who coordinates publications for the Twins, including the annual media guide with detailed information on players. "We probably put it down the first year and never looked at it again. I don't know why it happened; it fooled me." Puckett played his entire 12-year career with the Twins, who apparently learned of his correct age after the outfielder's retirement in 1996 and reported it in announcing his death. The long-running error means baseball cards throughout Puckett's career contained the wrong information. Officials at the Hall of Fame say they learned the true birth date of the star, who helped the Twins to two World Series in 1987 and 1991, about three years ago. When I was 15 I played in a 19 year old league called Thoroughbreds I believe. There were usually a couple of scouts at every game, and sometimes they would ask you to fill out a card with your name, address, date of birth, etc. They would tell the 19 year olds to shave off a year of their age, so they would have a better chance of being drafted or signed. We sometimes played at Triton. I wonder if Kirby was offerred the same advice.
