Fantastic "heads I win, tails you lose" argument

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 26, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) If any organization turns in 25,000 registrations at once then they were probably all flagged as fraudulent already and put in one group. Right, which is exactly what would happen with ACORN. They were required by law to submit all registrations, but they'd flag a bunch they were suspicious of.

snark doesn't work well to defend stupid racists and the bizarre political movements that get them nominated.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 02:34 PM) It was a joke. But it's not like SS linked the article just to prove there's a racist candidate out there. No, I was making the specific point that the Tea Party is getting extremely-right-wing, borderline-crazy, hopelessly ignorant, sometimes-super-racist conservative "values" candidates nominated. They're not getting people who actually know something about economics or taxation nominated. That doesn't make everyone who generally supports tea party ideas "borderline-crazy, hopelessly ignorant, sometimes-super-racist conservative "values" voters", but who they are getting to represent them does not dispel the idea that it's just standard conservatism with some populist anger mixed in.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 11:39 AM) StrangeSox, did you mean to quote my post and not respond? Apparently my phone doesn't work with soxtalk very well. I was going to say "can't get links now but..." and then what Rex posted. edit: yeah, I had read other sources on him that detailed his Tea Party affiliations. Sorry for not linking them and for the confusion.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2010 -> 07:45 AM) Tea Party? The words Tea Party don't even appear in that article. It appears he's a racist, so I hope he loses, and it seems like he will. But let's be clear - there is no mention that he is in any way affiliated with the Tea Party. The GOP who backed him, though, may want to re-think that decision.

Blatantly racist Tea Party candidate in New York (no, not Paladino this time). Those are Eliot's words, but he's quoting him favorably.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) So, basically measure the wall-to-wall square footage of each room and add them together? I don't think closets count either. Not sure about bathrooms. It also has to be above grade (no basements) to count.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 01:48 PM) HIMYM sucks. It's the same 3 jokes over and over and over and over and over again. Barney says something *laugh track* about sex *Laugh track*. Ted *laugh track* gives him a look *laugh track* and complains about not finding the one *laugh track*. Lilly and Marshall *laugh track* do something lame and have a serious moment. Robin complains and whines *laugh track*. More of Barney *laugh track* saying something about banging *laugh track* some chick *laugh track*. Ugh, so old and overdone. That is the formula for just about every sitcom with a laughtrack.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 10:37 AM) I want to get Civ 5, but my laptop cant handle it. Would need to get a new computer. I've heard they really dumbed it down from IV.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) I heard this morning that Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan actually has a 'challenger' in his district, a Republican with the name of John Patrick Ryan. But the problem is that noone in the Illinois Republican Party knows who that is, and he hasn't established a campaign office or held any fundraisers or events. Could he be a fake candidate slated to run so that Madigan doesn't really have to campaign? His district is pretty safe for him, so unless some phenom came out of the woodwork, he wouldn't have anythign to worry about, so wonder what is going on there. Oh, GOP State Chair Pat Brady is holding a fundraiser for him so hopefully he can find out! http://www.docstoc.com/docs/55166505/Patri...nRyanFundraiser I don't follow. What good does a fake candidate do for Madigan vs. no candidate?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 06:26 PM) FPct was always high for Rip, but his range was bad, he got to far, far fewer plays than his peers. Ozzie was a better defensive SS than those guys, though maybe not Fernandez. Ripken won a gold glove because he was Ripken. NSS, are you actually implying that players win awards not on merits but on name recognition? For shame, sir, for shame!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) 1.) He was a damn popular shortstop here as well. Both papers called him the face of the White Sox and one of the most popular figures in Chicago. Slam dunk for greg. 2.) Both papers said it. Read their takes on it. greg, I must implore you again to go take a class in logic. In the meantime, please look up what "appeal to authority" is.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) Kids have tons of required shots from the day they are born through high school. I'm not sure that many people would go without insurance until the kid actually gets sick. Many people can't afford to do otherwise without the help of programs like SCHIP.

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_16120503 http://www.latimes.com/health/la-fi-kids-h...,0,799167.story Best system in the world! I don't expect this "reform" to really be all that effective on the whole because we're still using the same rotten foundation for all of it.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 10:15 AM) with a child on the way, I was curious about this. So people will go out there and find a different insurance company just for their child? So for example, they would be on Aetna and the child would be on Blue Cross Blue Shield? If you were an actually-small business owner or otherwise self-employed, or you didn't have health insurance through your employer, you would probably want coverage for your child even if you couldn't afford a whole family plan. These child-only plans would typically have a ton of loopholes to deny care for even routine items and of course for any "pre-existing condition". Now, instead of offering these plans without being able to deny for pre-existing conditions, a lot of companies are simply not offering these plans. So it's whole family or nothing.
-
Darn. Wouldn't that just be terrible? Who will deny children health insurance then?! Really I suspect that we'll all be stuck with essentially the same terrible insurance system we currently have with some minor changes.
-
This is going to bankrupt and ruin the best healthcare system in the world! And in response to #1, a lot of insurance companies are simply dropping the child-only plans. Why, again, should we stick with a for-profit model for insurance?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 12:50 PM) Bell, CA. Haha, I was looking for that option in the poll. I'm out near LA right now and it's all over the news. Good news is that the $450,000 police chief isn't getting arrested. Wow, what is wrong with this state?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) In recorded history in North America (recorded meaning, like, the past couple hundred years, reliably recorded), there has been either zero or one wolf predations of humans. There was a case in northern Canada some time back, a teenage boy walking home from work at night disappeared. The body was found having been bitten up by wolves, but they don't know if that's what killed him. That's it, ever, on this continent, in modern times. The list of animals more likely to kill you includes raccoons, for example, via rabies. Wolves, as a general rule, don't attack people. I'm sure it will happen some day, but it will be the definition of an aberration. That won't stop some people from wanting to go out and kill all of them, of course. Because they're a threat to their livestock. They also slaughter a lot of bison for fear of passing disease to livestock.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 05:08 PM) I found this piece thoroughly amusing. Of course...this will be the last time we hear anything about how the Republicans are calling the Tribune Company and Bechtel "Small Businesses" in the tax debate. I think there's a joke about the Cubs to be made here somewhere... Well, to be fair, the article doesn't detail how many of those small businesses actually have high revenues. Bechtel might be an extreme outliar in that sample. It cites less than 20,000 out of 750,000 being partnerships or s-corps with receipts above $50M.

I'd bet this adds ammunition to that case of the fan suing MLB (and Ramon Castro, I think) over this.
