QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) This is a republic, not a direct democracy. The will of the people does matter in terms of the big picture, but that's not how decisions get made. If it did, oh my god would our government be making some horrible decisions. How many times have we all heard "Clinton didn't do anything without first checking a poll." Now Obama is being criticized for not checking a poll before doing anything.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 29, 2009 -> 07:44 PM) that would suck, I'd totally be in jail. Ha, I just thought, wouldn't it be funny if the "I smoked marijuana" for politicians in 20 years is "I illegally downloaded music" "I didn't inhale" will become "I didn't listen to it"

I work about a mile north of O'Hare and saw some smoke over the airport when I left last night. I didn't see any fire, though. There was some smoke on Wednesday or Tuesday also, but I think that might have just been a burst tire.

Doesn't that quote say that he specifically said that it isn't caused by global warming? I think he was using it to illustrate how damaging a flood can be.

Wow. That sentence is something else.

I have to call BS on this. He agreed to an annual "salary" of $1 and a deferred "bonus" of 3/4's of a million dollars if he worked there for a year. He didn't do this out of a sense of duty; he did it because he knew he was going to be paid a rather large sum of money at the end of his contract period. I also don't feel much sympathy for him have to work 10-14 hour days. Plenty of people work that long without $750,000 worth of compensation.

I'm surprised they showed a grown man shooting a child in the chest on prime time. This was definitely a much stronger ending than last week.

They also tend to cause more accidents than they prevent. More people slam on their brakes to stop for a yellow and it drastically increases rear-end collisions at an intersection. You need to pay close attention to how they report crash numbers, because they'll often skew the data by only including accidents that happen within the cross-walks as being at the intersection. This eliminates all of those rear-end collisions. It's absolutely a revenue stream in my mind. edit: Forgot about this wonderful aspect. Cities tamper with light timing to shorten yellows and increase tickets. The sooner these are made illegal nation wide, the better off we'll be. http://techdirt.com/articles/20080410/011257809.shtml

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 03:51 PM) He, and the Republicans generally, are attacking the pork/spending thing the wrong way. Their base point, that this tack-on spending is problematic and wasteful, is correct. But by picking certain individual spending items and mocking them, when many may in fact be important and useful, makes them look like buffoons. As far as I'm concerned, Jindal is a buffoon. This just adds another piece to the stack of evidence.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) I'm sorry, I thought gifts were all about the thought behind it, not the value. I guess we should have bought Britten a few Gold plated warships to prove our love to them. By that measure, the British gift was much more thoughtful. It was a pen made out of the same wood as the desk in the Oval Office, which, IIRC came from an old British warship.

This is the first Illini game I've watched all year. They are playing awfully.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) Dumbasses. Liddy actually managed to keep Allstate conservative and clean, in their investments and finance divisions. He's been at AIG for a whole month, and they expect him to fix everything? Do these people have any business sense at all? No. this is why they are in congress.

I thought Rasmussen was pretty good the last few election cycles? Kap, you're going off the deep end...

Mr Angelo, please trade for Jay Cutler!

QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) I am a firm believer that 75% of a quarterback's success is determined by his situation. Here is the situation in Chicago: The Bears play a minimum of four games in horrendous conditions. The Bears currently have zero or very limited playmaking ability on offense. The Bears offensive line is not a strong point. Why would the Bears want a risk taking, win or lose you the game, gunslinging quarterback??? Let alone give up tons of picks for one??? Cutler is great... but not in the Bears current situation. So no QB can ever be good in Chicago? -
AIG insured itself against its own risk. Someone please explain why we need to retain these financial geniuses again?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:08 PM) There was an issue with him really wanting to post some anti-muslim stuff, he earned himself a suspension for it, and hasn't come back since. That's unfortunate. His post-game thread titles were always good for a laugh.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:41 PM) from what i can tell no one here respected the guy before, but they also didn't obsess with him B.O.C (before obama criticism) Plenty of people here have been critical of the media for not seeing/ ignoring all of this until it hit them in the head well before this whole Cramer-Stewart episode. This issue became a national discussion, so is it any surprise that it was talked about more here?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:35 PM) No one? I'm pretty sure that I, among others, noted what a hack Cramer is, in this forum, well before this s*** hit the fan. Exactly. Cramer just brought himself into the spotlight.
-
1) Cramer clearly knew about stock manipulation and short-selling. 2) Stewart's point was that they went for gimmicky cheer-leading bulls*** instead of even trying to find out if something was up. They lapped up whatever they were fed.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) And looking back, you edit a lot StrangeSox! Get your whole thought out, then hit the post button! Yeah, I really should type up a post and let it sit for a few minutes before replying because I almost always end up amending it or rewording something because I didn't like how something was written.
